Looking at the Jumper the TAC team will wear next season, and the predominantly red jumper, "The Reds" might be an appropriate nickname.

It would be a lot easier to adopt than a tangible mascot amongst supporters and cannot be disputed (as it is the prominent colour)

The Reds is taken by the Queensland Reds - Rugby Union.

It's original (ie. not americanised) and sounds physical, I could see people getting passionate about the Guards.

I was driving up the highway from The Coast yesterday and I thought..whaddabout The Giants.
Cant think of a major sporting franchise in Australia using it.

The Giants were a failed attempt (one of the many) at a Gold Coast team in the then NRL in the late 80's/early 90's. Not that I am superstitious or believe in omens, but the name still doesn't sit well with me.

well i told the gc17 website about how it was a stupid decision to have colours that were already taken and they already had good colours on their website but you know them and taking suggestions

The regional team are dubbed the Stingrays, so that or Rays are likely, as they wear the same red and gold colours. Sun RAYS are gold and make you go red when overdone.

Gold Coast Riders sounds alright (the logos you made were awesome, aneale). Still like Gold Coast Sharks, like a lot of people on here as it seems logical. The Gold Coast Bull(sharks) name is clever. Imagine the headlines though, if they play crap... "Gold Coast was bullsh!t" HAHA.
