Always the risk .

The Glory are covered in it , but it isn't glory .
The Victory -a moral one at least or immoral ?
The Power has had the energy sucked out of them .
The Storm are a washout - they never threatened .
The Blues have Fev or is that the other way round .
But always the Eagles are flying high !

:)

Some are worse than others, I think this goes under the worse ones category.

Apologies if this has has already been suggested but how about
Gold Coast Destroyers.
A good tough name with a marine theme. Logo could be a battle ship, and it would make for a nice clash with the Bombers... or Dockers.

I'm a bit surprised the Gold Coast Dragons isn't more popular. A gold dragon would make a fantastic mascot and dragons are famous for sitting on a pile of gold, so it ties in nicely with the name.

A also like Gold Coast Ghosts and Gold Coast Kraken.

GCFC Raze

...otherwise, GCFC KINGFISHERS GO KINGS!

Sociological experiment (GC Nickname)

The Gold Coast powers-that-be have stated that there will be no initial nickname, and that it will evolve over time from the supporters.

Well, basically this means, the supporters have to DO something!

Here is an experiment for the GC supporters. When you attend matches next year, for an entire game, please yell out:

"Go xxx!"

Where xxxx = a nickname. And make it a legit one, ie: one of the 5 initial choices, or the Sharks. Not something ridiculous like wombats, or tree-snakes or something that will obviously never be picked.

I just think it fascinating if say someone with a booming voice did this all game, or perhaps even better, a big group of friends. It would be interesting to see sociologically if this actually gets picked up by strangers in the crowd, and they all start cheering the same thing. Even if people don't start mimicing the battle cry, it could at least start discussion.

If no one starts a nickname chant at a game, it basically won't happen in my opinion.

Re: Sociological experiment (GC Nickname)

I think what you've said is what they are exactly hoping will happen, people will be shouting GO GOLDS or GO THE DAZZLERS (in a shock move Liam Jurrah is stolen from the Demons and brings a 'dazzling' culture to the Gold Coast where they are a dashing young flowing team ;) ) and people will catch on and word will spread. maybe there will be inititive in the commentary boxes to be able to hear some of the things yelled out??

Re: Sociological experiment (GC Nickname)

it really should be the sharks. have a friend whos father is involved with southport, and the word coming out is that the AFL want an independant team (basically an AFL team rather then a GC team).

I've heard Richmond got theirs from some guy who sat in a tree and shouted "Eat 'em alive, Tigers!". Used to be "Wasps" before that. Seems GC want this sort of thing, but I just don't think it'll work like that nowdays...

Re: Sociological experiment (GC Nickname)

Not going to make much sense if they end up nicknamed the sharks and they have a flamboyant lifeguard as the mascot though.

Stick with the Guardians in my opininon :thumbsu:

Re: Sociological experiment (GC Nickname)

It has to be the Sharks!

I think the GC club didn't want to come out and say they wanted to be the sharks in fear of loosing support from the local competition supporters. Ie. Surfers etc.

But the supporters I have spoken to wouldn't have a problem supporting a team named the Sharks in the AFL.

I can see a supporter yelling out "Wow see how **** sharked the ball just then." Perfect opportunity to pick up the name.

Sharks - Strong, fierce, cunning and best of all feared. Perfect.

Re: Sociological experiment (GC Nickname)

GC Sharks works for me. how about GC Tourists?:D While on the subject of names, was thinking of the new(should be Tasmania but West Sydney is Andy D lovechild) W Sydney side, i thought the nickname Pioneers is interesting. Considering the history of the area, all the people who went through the area to settle etc. Or is this culturally insensitive?

Re: Sociological experiment (GC Nickname)

if everyone yells GO SHARKS, it would be almost impossible for the powers that be not to adopt it, personally I would love it to come to fruition as it is far and away the most popuar name on this forum.

The only others I like are

Warriors and maybe force.

As a former S.A. resident, and a former rabid Woodvile fan, I would be wrapt to see the Warriors being used again.. That being said, I preferred the 'Peckers. Lets hope GC or WS goes with the green and gold. Whatever happened to Stephen Nichols?

I still rate Nichols as one of the best Full Forwards I've ever seen. Absolute freak!!

I'm a Woodville Supporter too and have often thought I'd like to see Gold Coast become the Warriors.

I started playing for Gold Coast Super Rules last season and dragged out my old Warriors guernsey for training quite a few times :)

Dunno, Jakovich was even more of a freak. Was at our last match before the merger at Adelaide Oval and saw him kick 13..Zip Zap...Zip Zap

Yeah, Jakovich was a freak too and Melbourne supporters would definitely agree. But for some reason I didn't like him as much as Nichols. Woodville were blessed with great full forwards in those days
