Pressure off. Season gone.
Arsenal 2 utd 1.

Not a chance IMO. Fergie's got Wenger's number.

He'll roll out the 4-5-1, we'll dominate possession, have a few chances here and there, Sagna and Clichy (especially) will cross it in to the box to no avail (as usual) only for Nani and Valencia to storm into the space created by our FBs pushing up, culminating in a 3-0 loss.

Oh and Park/Hernandez will score a crappy goal out of a deflected cross.

Costs of these players? Baines and Hazard I feel are affordable. Subotic and De Rossi will cost you 20-25+. I'd be fine to pay that for Subotic but De Rossi may be a bit old to pay that kind of cash. I wouldn't mind if we did as he is absolute class but fair enough if we didn't. None of this will happen though, it's Wenger remember.

Baines affordable? Really? IMO Moyes will want > 15M

LB - Baines
CB - Subotic or Hummels - sign one Wenger.
DMC - No clue to be honest, a few in Spain knockin about but the ones I am thinking of aren't really goal scorers. I'd LOVE a strong no nonsense DMC who will set our players straight, lift the team up and score a cracking goal. Easier said than done to find though. De Rossi?
Winger - Hazard

i like these thoughts mate but yes as you said its unlikely its going to happen. we pretty much know every season what our weaknesses are, but wenger insists on sticking with the players within. and he only enters the transfer market if the "right player comes at the right price" (i.e, we know the right players are out there but instead of paying the money required, we'll acquire someone cheap from a lower league such as the french ligue 1)

we've got the money, we're one of the most financially viable clubs in europe and the arsenal management (from board level through to wenger) should be applauded for the financial model they've instilled in the club. however sure its time to invest some of that well earned capital and for god's sake buy a quality centre back, and a central midfielder to marshall the defence/midfield, and protect the back four...let's be honest, we never really replaced the great vieria and its no surprise we've won nothing since.

Our big trophy hope next season, the Emirates Cup, has been announced with Boca Juniors, New York Red Bulls, and PSG.

Henry obviously the drawcard for New York coming over,

Arsenal
If we do not deliver in one or two years I will be responsible. It is the most important moment in the life of this club" - Arsene Wenger, 16 May 2009.

So now what? An acceptance of the blame is the only start. Only if Arsene is as good as his word and admits responsibility for Arsenal's fault lines, and the resultant cracks that have emerged in the past two months, can Arsenal's collapse be followed by a recovery. They don't need a new manager, they just need their manager to realise that he doesn't always know best.

The required rebuild must start within his own team. He needs a new assistant with a new voice and fresh ideas. He needs new medical personnel and a new goalkeeping coach. He needs to start over again with a change of approach and an acceptance that money must be spent and that principles are pointless without pragmatism.

The deadwood - Almunia, Eboue, Squillaci, Diaby, Denilson, Rosicky - in Arsenal's flabby, over-indulged squad must be shed. Players of authority with a proven track record of winning must be acquired whatever the cost. Then Arsenal must finally return to basics on the training ground. Forget the triangles, remember the essentials. Shooting, crossing, set-pieces. All that pretty passing counts for nothing when chances are frequently missed at one end and all the opposing team has to do is hit one long ball to score at the other.

According to Opta, 54% of all the goals conceded by Arsenal this season have been from set-pieces. What that statistic doesn't damningly reveal is the abysmally low percentage of set-pieces which they have successfully defended. That, surely, is the most staggering and costly number of all. In the last two months, for instance, they've conceded three goals from the 25 corners they've faced up to. At the other end, they've taken 47 corners and not scored once.

They've cornered the market in throwing away games and for Wenger, the experiment must be over. It's time to own up to some home truths. The triangles have just taken Arsenal around in a circle - it's time for some straightforward basics again.

Here's a theory on set pieces (may be dumb): Maybe we are so shit at defending them because we are so shit at converting them. Therefore, at training, our defenders aren't challenged as much. That's if we even do any training for this at all.

I dunno. Just pay some lower league side to be the attacking team at set piece training? :p

It's not dumb it actually makes sense in a way. Sad to see we still haven't sorted out set pieces, 54% is absolutely disgusting. Can't blame solely on our defenders as well. Still would like a big rock in defence, gotta go all out for one. Need some extra work on set pieces, I knew we were poor but not that poor.

Fair call re: Baines, I think I was thinking 20mill and over is too much, Wenger should pay 15m for Baines, would be worth it. Offload Clichy for 8-10 perhaps. Clichy is OK but he can't cross. Good dribbler, quick but whats the point of having him put balls in when they always just go over the top.

But yeah Moyes always over-prices his players then when he goes to buy expects far lower value.

As we're all desperate for some signings this off-season, and being financially literate (audit/assurance background) I downloaded Arsenal's financial report for 09/10 to read up on levels of debt, interest levels, cash positions etc.

Firstly, Arsenal plc consists of two operating segments (Arsenal FC and Arsenal Property).

  • Net cash inflow for the FY doubled from 2009. Primarily due to the Property segment now being completely debt free.
  • Group's (Football and Property) net debt was reduced from 297.7 million to 135.6 million
  • Total profit after tax increased to 60.1 million (2009 35.2 million)
  • Net finance charges (interest) were 18.2 million, of this, 14.6 million relates to the Emirates Stadium (principal repayments are a fixed 5.6 million
  • There are roughly 20 years left on the long term bonds used to build the stadium.
  • Total revenue from Football segment was 222 million; wages rose to 110 million (almost 50% of football revenue); and finally
  • 127 million in cash, up from 99 million (2009)
Basically, Arsenal are rolling in it, now I don't know how much of the Property segment is allowed to be re-invested into the football operations, but still...if I hear that we don't have funds available I will internally combust.

nice post mate

if they handed out trophies to the best financially viable clubs, then we would be a world class team. really hope we finally put our financial position to good use this summer and acquire what we need - a centre back & and a defensive central midfielder at a minimum.

well, after saying for the last few months that 'united still have to come to the emirates', it is upon us tonight. if only we managed to win some league games when it mattered in march and april, tonight's game would actually have some significance.

as it stands though, im sure united want the win given chelsea are only 3 points back currently (having played a game more of course)

In one half Arsh just gave us more (defensively) than what he has done in the past six months...

Pic from when Szczesny took out Bale at WHL. Epic!:thumbsu:

agreed. i for one dont think we need to buy a new keeper now, sczenszny should be our number 1 going forward - just hoping he keeps fit. fabianksi showed better form at the start of this season before he injured himself, so probably deserves to be retained as a deputy

we showed a lot of character to hold onto the lead this morning, given how often in recent times we've thrown it away late. just wish we had this kind of resolve 2 months ago - as instead of being 6 points away in 3rd position, this was the game we were long thinking that a victory could see us launch into a championship

a massive game looms next weekend at old trafford, i think im going to have to take next monday off work and watch the football sunday night. i believe the arsenal v stoke game is the 11pm kick off, with chelsea at man united the late game at 1am
