Trump won the 2024 presidential election, the first to win back the Oval Office after losing reelection since Grover Cleveland in 1892.

Trump's victory could have huge ramifications for the Ukrainians. Trump and the Republicans have vowed to cut US overseas spending and aid to the Ukraine war effort was high on their agenda. When Trump takes office he will have a majority in both houses of the Congress so he is free to do what he wants. In the past Trump has had a 'cosy' relationship with Putin and it would not surprise if he was prepared to concede Ukrainian territory in a deal that is unacceptable to the Ukrainians. The other complication is Trump's attitude to NATO. Trump threatened to pull the US out of NATO if the Europeans did not increase their expenditure, this threat may re emerge. The biggest winner out of the US election may prove to be Vladimir Putin.
The Israeli situation is less clear cut. Trump has promised to bring the conflict in the Middle East to and end but as usual Trump is full of what he will do but less clear on how he will do it. In the past Trump supported the Israelis to the hilt. He even moved the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem at the request of Netanyahu. If he is true to form Trump will probably put some sort of time line on the Israelis to get the job done.
Closer to home the Mexican/ US relations are likely to take a massive hit. Trump has promised to increase tariffs on Mexican goods in retaliation to the flood of illegal immigrants coming across the border. I heard on the BBC that in Honduras they were praying for a Harris victory as 40% of that nation's shattered economy depended on money sent by ex pats in the US back to Honduras. That is a staggering figure and shows the extent of the illegal immigrant problem in the US. As is the case in Australia this US election was decided on domestic issues. From the countless interviews with US voters on the BBC they were more concerned with issues like unemployment, the cost of living, reining in government spending and illegal immigrants than they were with international relations. In the eyes of the majority the Democrats failed to address these issues.
One positive from Trump's election is the boost to the US Stock Market. As I type the Dow Jones is up by 3.43% and that will probably transfer to the ASX. That is good news for Super Funds and investors. I can just picture Trump saying, 'look at the stock market- those people think my election was a good idea'. That is what he said early in his first term of office.
Interesting times.

I’ve seen lots of dead people on ‘X’ in GAZA thanks to ‘free speech’ and really has all this free speech stopped the war there? Not one bit…. and why should anybody with ‘X’ be able to see that kinda stuff, it really serves no purpose.
In reality social media platforms like ‘X’ are just places for humans to yell at each other, they aren’t much good for anything in the big scheme.

Long form podcasts like Joe Rogan probably did more to get Trump elected than anything else. The contrast of he and his VP willing to sit down for 3 hours unscripted and unedited, compared to Harris who needed a teleprompter just to string 3 sentences together was stark.

I wouldn't think it changed the election result but if I had skin in the game I would be sick of celebrities telling me how to vote. Kamala's jump the shark moment for me was rolling out Cardi B. She would appeal to a tiny minority of voters and alienate exactly the sort of people the Dems wanted to cross to them.
I know Trump did it too but Hulk Hogan and Kid Rock are more comedic value than anything and appeal to his support base.

Completely agree.
What I will never understand is why the Dems are so willing to play the identity politics game labelling anyone even remotely leaning to supporting Trump as someone supporting a fascist, a Nazi etc, when these swing voters are the very people you need to get back on your side in the future of you are to win in 4 years time.
The Cardi B non-teleprompter gaffe requiring her to read off a phone was an all timer.
And yet we know in 4 years time the Dems will roll this same campaign out with all the celebrities etc - this is just what they do for better or worse.

The Democrats have always had the idea that they have a monopoly on morality. This feeds into the celebs that want to add this aspect to their brand, regardless of who they actually vote for. It’s disingenuous and puts a lot of people off, including those on their side of the divide.

Bernie would have comfortably won any of the last 3 elections, but the Dems would rather lose while maintaining neoliberalism than concede anything to working people.

The Dems are absolute morons. In fact, the entire western centre-centre-left movement across every country are morons.
The Republicans recognise the concerns that working people have and offer solutions. Those solutions are garbage fearmongering that won't help, but they're solutions. When the Dems are basically only offering the fact that they aren't Trump, the message wears thin after 3 elections of the same thing. Everyone voted for Biden because he wasn't Trump and their lives didn't materially improve.
The Dems had the right candidate in Bernie Sanders who would have obliterated Trump's stranglehold on the working class, but they closed ranks to force him out TWICE because they don't actually want policies that help the working class.
All of this would be funny if it wasn't for the fact that Trump will use this term to retire a couple of Supreme Court justices to take supermajority control of the court for a generation or more. America will likely need some civil unrest to fix it.

He speaks directly to the working class, he addresses their concerns. He rightly points out that it's a rigged system full of corrupt pieces of shit holding the working class down. He's able to seperate himself from that system. He promises to change it, which he will, but not for the better.
The Dems talk down to working people with shame politics. They had a candidate in Bernie Sanders who is very popular with the working class and offers help for the working class, and they squash him twice to put establishment candidates in.

Trump stuck on message (between rants) on the old bread and butter issues that mattered, whilst the Democrats blundered, but the results don't retrospectively change how Republicans were trying to reduce the numbers of those likely to vote Democrat and had it all setup to dispute this election if they lost. Those claims of voter fraud they've been making through the campaign have suddenly disappeared now he won.
