I feel like sharing about my 1 month, vastly amazing American holiday. Including spots that were either hit or miss but also taking into account my predetermined mindset heading into my holiday.

Los Angeles (12 days)

Some will say spending 12 days in Los Angeles is a bit too long, and they could be right. There were plenty of days where myself and my friends had to search for things to do. That being said, I had an amazing time in LA and I wouldn't change the length of time I spent there. First off we stayed in the lovely Santa Monica (in comparison to most of LA, if you are looking for a nice area to stay in look no further). Not massively far from some of the hotspots of LA, I genuinely loved this place from the moment I touched down. We stayed in an Air BnB accomodation which was cheap and in a great location. Santa Monica has a couple things to offer, I particularly loved the Santa Monica pier and frequented it multiple times during my stay. Rent out a bike from the pier and head left, all the way down to Venice Beach. An awesome ride that will only take 10 or so minutes. Afterwards, deciding not to go to San Diego (which could be a regret - not sure), we decided to spend a few more days in a hostel. A cost saving option, but also a great decision. The hostel we stayed in was located behind Hollywood Boulevard and was called USA Hostels. Highly recommended. Security is top notch and the overall vibe of the hostel was great, with events running throughout the day and night. Some nights there wasn't really a need to head out to a bar or club, as the hostel ran parties which were pretty amazing. 6 Flags Amusement Park (Magic Mountain) is an absolute must if you are a ride enthusiast. An Uber cost us around $35 US, split between 4 and definitely worth it.

Hit:
USA Hostels
Santa Monica Pier
6 Flags Amusement Park (Magic Mountain) -- amazing place which wasn't overly crowded like Universal.
Staple Center for an NBA game.
Burger places - plenty of variety. I particularly liked Tommy's and Five Guys.

Meh:
Hollywood Blvd - don't have high expectations, but check it out nevertheless. Some cool people to interact with, but be careful roaming at night.
Night life - we found some cool spots, but mostly the nightlife was pretty dry in LA. Some cool bars in Downtown, like anything, it's what you make of it.
Universal Studios - overcrowded, but still pretty cool.

Miss:
Nothing we did was horrible.

Las Vegas

You can't go wrong here. 3 insane days of partying/gambling and I wish I had a little more time there. We were here for New Years Eve and the joint was insanely busy. Clubs are off the charts and will set you back quite a lot of money for drinks and entry fees. I would recommend staying in Ballys for a cheaper option, not one of the major casinos in Vegas though. The Gun Range is quite cool if you're looking for something to do of a day. I had the best time in Vegas and it was easily my favourite place in the USA.

Hit:
Casinos - Caesar's Palace is quite the sight.
Gun Range

Miss:
Nothing.

Yosemite National Park

This place is nothing short of a spectacle. It was covered in ice and snow, which made the track walks extremely fun as everybody was slipping and falling over. You MUST see this place in person. Words cannot do it any justice.

San Francisco

A beautiful city. Certainly has it's own style in comparison to other US cities. Nightlife was really good and everything was close-by. Unfortunately, Alcatraz was sold out so I cannot comment on that. We had a boat cruise which took us out under the Golden Gate bridge. Very cold, but definitely worth embracing.

New York

SO. ****ING. COLD. Avoid this place during Winter if you cannot brace the cold weather. Unfortunately I got wasted one night and lost my warm winter jacket. So I braced the cold in a hoodie for the duration of my time in NYC. A massive city, so it was impossible to do everything we wanted in the time frame we were there. Hit up the 9/11 memorial, the Brooklyn Bridge, Timesquare and make sure you use the Subway system there. It's extremely efficient and will save you lots on Cabs/Ubers. Just make sure you speak to someone and have them explain how the system works beforehand.

Hit:

Nightlife - some great bars and clubs, literally on every corner. I particularly liked a place called Turtle Bay.
Timesquare - you've probably heard all about it. Check it out.
Brooklyn Bridge
9/11 Memorial
Rockafella View Point
Central Park

Miss:

Wall Street - I personally wouldn't bother.

Miami

Avoid during Winter, in my opinion. Whilst it was by far the warmest place I stayed in, the weather itself wasn't great and it heavily dictates how much fun you can have in Miami. A very tourist-heavy place, it reminded me a lot of Gold Coast. All about the beach and the nightlife. I would recommend, if you're looking for something to do other than the beach during the day, to go on a fishing charter or hire a scooter and drive around. Otherwise, other than drinking and partying, there isn't much to see in Miami.

If anyone has any questions about any of these places, feel free to quote or PM. I had an amazing time and (hopefully) have lot's of knowledge to pass on these certain places. USA is an amazing place, and I'm definitely excited to go back and explore the South, as well as more of the East.

Nice work AF. Just got back from Vegas for NYE aswell. Was there for 8 nights and honestly still struggled to see/do everything. The place is just nuts. Stayed at the Cosmopolitan with a balcony room view of the strip and it was jaw-dropping. Expensive, but just unreal. Loved it.

I usually drive around 40,000 miles a year doing road trips thru the US --------- you can see my posts here on it. Happy to answer any specific questions.
Is it something you would recommend to a bunch of 21 year olds looking to see the States for a couple of months?

Compared to going with the flights, hotels and public transport routine how would it compare?

I have this vision that it would the roads would be great to drive on and having a few of us in a van would be a lot of fun. Thoughts?

So, Im done with Europe, now i need a list of the biggest and baddest roller coasters in the US. Not really after the best theme park, I'm happy to go to a theme park just for one ride. I don't want cool or quirky, I want white knuckle. Thanks.

Cedar Point in Ohio has three great coasters. Six Flags GA NJ has two good ones. Knoebels in PA has two solid ones too, Hersheypark has a good one as well. You can actually cover all of those in four days if you're committed.

Looks like I've got a 3 week leave pass. First time to the U.S. After some planning help.
Four things I want/need to do: DC (friend and political sites - 3 nights maybe), NYC (friend - 5/6 nights), get a feel for the South, and see some big landscapes.

Toying with driving Washington to Austin (would like to visit Austin) but it's a hell of a long way and not sure if feasible or scenic. Perhaps Nashville is far enough. Definitely want to see small town America. Any tips?

If you're knocking 8 days off for NYC and DC (you should swing by Philadelphia if you get the chance on the way from one to the other), it is feasible but not advised. You can hit Memphis, Nashville, Charlotte, and a lot more, but 11-12 days just isn't enough to give them each solid time. I would maybe recommend just heading south and hit Charleston and Savannah, they're both great southern cities.

What you may be forgetting is that, as Robert Louis Stevenson said - it is better to travel than to arrive. Getting there is more than half the fun. If you want to do a road trip.

I would definitely go for Charleston, as one of the quintessential small cities of the South (or Savannah), plus Nashville TN. I would give Charlotte a miss by comparison. Memphis is one of my least favorite cities. If you go there do not stay in west Memphis (near the Mrs Sippi).

Forget public transport (except Amtrak on some routes). Forget airports except when you want to do some long distance travel in a silver tube. The roads are awesome to drive on, from Interstates to US highways to county roads. Driving gives you a glimpse of the real USA - not what you see on TV or Hollywood movies. The scenery is wonderful. You would have a a lot of fun in a van (you mean an RV?).

But y'all are only 21. When I was 21 I wanted to do everything in a hurry, and at that age it worked for me. But now I take things slower, and I plan more.

If you are petrol heads like me you would enjoy road trips and the driving. But if not, then you might want a mix of big city attractions for guys your age, plus a bit of a road trip from A to B.

When do you plan to be in the US? The weather will dictate the road trip. Either side of winter is the best (Fall or Spring) northern hemisphere.

My tip is not to try to do too much. Pick 2 or 3 areas and then focus on what you want to do.

When you work that out let me know and I can give you some suggestions. Some of my posts here provide some details.

Have driven on the East Coast from Miami to Halifax, Canada. Not staying in big cities other than Miami, Atlanta and Atlantic City. Seeing the smaller towns was a highlight. Loved Savannah and the history of Gettysburg plus got off the Interstater and followed the coast thru Maine (some of the prettiest scenery have seen).

To each their own. I loved it.
Fair enough. It was probably the worst day I've had in the states out of the two times I've gone.

I'm not overly rapt on Vegas though. I've been twice, once in summer which was wayyyyy too hot and once in winter which was a 5 day stay, and felt 2 days too many.

Casino's in general are horrible places, can't stand the casino part of crown here in Melbourne either.

The outlet shops are really good and there's not a while lot else that really appeals to me.

We are very, very different people haha. I've been to America twice and Vegas twice. And I can't wait to go back. Just an absolute den of debauchery.
Where else can you walk into a gun range heavily intoxicated and shoot a Barret .50cal? Or ride a rollercoaster through a casino?
Was far less impressed with LA. Shithole.

I agree. First time in Vegas was 21, then 22 going this year and I'll be 24 and just as excited. The best fun is in the sports bars in the arvo. $20 all you can drink for 5 hours. Then find a good night club. Vegas can actually be a really cheap trip if you don't gamble and do some research.

Exactly. It's what you make of it. When I went over NewYears my mate and I didn't even go nightclubbing once for the 8 days we were there. Still had a ball.

Where you staying? Highly recommend Cosmopolitan. Absolutely stunning hotel/casino.

Yeah staying at the Cosmo this time round. Balcony room with a view of the Bellagio fountains. Should be cool (for the shirt amount of time you actually spend in ur room) have also stayed in Ceasers and Planet Hollywood. Got any tips? Always open to new ideas.

Chandelier bar at Cosmo is a must.
Check out Aria, really impressive hotel/casino.
The Linq ferris wheel is very cool.
There's a new shopping district by Bally's.
Penn & Teller at the Rio was great.
If you want shooting, Battlefield Vegas is the best hands-down. 300+ guns to choose from, including a Barret 50.cal and an actual minigun (and fairly cheap too). And they drop you back at your hotel in an ex-military Humvee for free!
Rent a couple Harleys and ride out to Red Rock just outside of Vegas, amazing scenery.

My friend and I did a two-day pub crawl of the strip. North side one day, and the South side a few days later. Got at least one drink at every place along the way, and got a $5 chip at each casino. Took ages but got there eventually and it was a good way to see everything in a short amount of time. Hurt though.

We stayed at Planet Hollywood last time, what was your impression of it?

Looks amazing! Thanks for the feed back man. Pub crawl sounds like hard work haha. We might try something similar. Planet Hollywood was good, I didn't like the Casino so much. Ceasers and the flamingo are my favourite casinos on the strip.

What's up with people going to Vegas and not enjoying gambling or nightclubs? That's ALL you do there.

I certainly did! Had a few days of not gambling heavily. But we were at the night clubs every night. Bith times I have been after attending Coachella music festival. 4 full days of very little sleep in the desert then heading to Vegas is ****ing hard work lol
