It's easily the best of the American sports I'd recommend anyone goes to a NHL game even if you aren't a fan

Yeah i went and watched the Kings last year and also the Ducks while i was floating around Cali and loved it!! Even up in the Bleachers for the Ducks game was amazing.

Looking forward to next year and going to watch the new Vegas team and also the Rangers

Just on Vegas again, it's definitely not for everyone. I've been twice. Once in June as a pair and once over new years with my 5 best mates.

I didn't enjoy it at all. Aside from Disneyland it's the place I least enjoyed in the States.
See this is the sort of post I can respect, even if the opinion contained within is the opposite of my own. No suggestion of "X is shit; you're a fool if you go there". Just "This place wasn't for me".

Exactly, Not for everyone, some people love it (Me included) and some people don't.

Why didn't you like Disneyland?

Not really my cup of tea. Rides aren't that much of a draw card for me and even though cues were low it still dragged. There wasn't much else. So unless you love rollarcoasters, there it's a wasted day.

New Orleans
Don't bother with bourbon st it is disgusting imo. We did a Plantation and Swamp tour that was pretty fun. Depending what time you go check out the Superdome for a game
Great city, great people and great food. A ton of BBQ and Mexican places all over the place, 6th st is where all the college kids go and if you're there check out Petes Duelling Piano bar which is a bit of fun. Every bar will have live music and cheap drinks so you can't go wrong. Again, depending on when you're there go to a Longhorns game and tailgate before the game is great fun

Cheers for that. Will be there in May so I think I will miss that. Hearing really great things about Austin :thumbsu: 3 nights enough?

Austin was amazing, probably my favourite city behind the big apple. I stayed in the HI hostel, it's across the river from downtown but it worked out well. The weather was mint so I walked along the Colorado River and across the bridge everyday and from there's a bunch to see and drink. Ripper city. Didn't catch a Longhorns game but was able to do a tour of the stadium.

New Orleans was very unique and fairly ghetto in some parts. Nightlife and food were great and saw the Pelicans for about $5.

Boston I really enjoyed, only spent 2 days there which was fine but would love to get back. So much history and any of their sporting teams are must see. Did a tour of Fenway Park which was great, a love checking out all the old great ballparks.

Spent a night in Charleston, beautiful city and the locals were probably the friendliest I came across in the States. Had some great food there and nightlife went off, near some college bars. Wouldn't need to spend too much time there. Also spent a night in Savannah, can't go wrong with either.

Tend to agree. Bourbon st is what it is - awesome for footy trips and frat parties, and terrible for seeing "cultural" NOLA. Plenty of bright young things throwing up the gutters, and dude bros chasing them.

Frenchman street, however, is awesome IMO. Just a 15 mins walk from Bourbon st. Cool jazz bars, awesome street buskers, friendly vibe...loved it, and felt is was far more "real" than Bourbon st. The walk through the back streets to get there was pretty cool too.

(I used the Spotted Cat just as an example of where to go on Frenchman St).

Tend to agree, I had a great night down Bourbon street though. Austin is brilliant, we stayed at the Firehouse Hostel and really enjoyed it.

Portland is amazing, great beer and food scene and also has some amazing scenery especially if your on a road trip. San Diego is laid back, great weather, great beaches, and plenty of good spots to eat and drink whether you want to do it down Gaslamp with the tourists and visitors or head down to Pacific Beach for a more locals scene. I loved San Diego, was probably close to my favourite city on my Cali trip.

Of all the memories of the USA and there so many, riding the Greyhound was the most incredible, 22 hours from Richmond Virginia to Montgomery Alabama,
baby faced farm lads going to Fort Bragg, young African Americans with their undies on show, ex cons with tattoos covering their faces , southern Appalachian families with a drawl you could cut with a knife ,the America you never see. My wife and I sat up the back with the bad boys, they were larrikins and we felt perfectly at home and we all hated the driver , what a buzz!

Trying to narrow down some places to fit into my 5 week trip. Does anyone have any thoughts on the following and/or experiences:

New Orleans
Portland (Oregon)
Austin
San Diego
Boston
Charleston

Portland is great if you want to see some awesome scenery eg Mt Hood and the lakes around it, Columbia River Gorge is a nice drive.
Food and drink are also good - stacks of really good local micro-breweries.
I get there at least once a year with work and still find stuff to see and do each time.

Big fan of San Diego, Austin is great if you are going to go out and drink and Portland is nice but you only need a few days there.

I found Boston a bit dull, I hope Chicago is on your list.

Chicago is on my list. We are going with friends so have all agreed that 7 places in 34 days will be sufficient. We are definitely doing New York (4 nights) and Vegas (4 nights) so we've got to come to an agreement on the final 5 places - I'm pretty sure that New Orleans and Portland are just about set in stone as well. Any recommendations very much welcome!

Honestly, yeah, though it certainly depends on what you're into. If you love gambling you'll probably be ok. I went for the first time early last year and felt 3 nights was probably 1 too many.
I'd agree with "it depends on what you're into", but then that's true of most destinations. I know people who wouldn't get much out of four nights in New York.

Personally, I think Vegas has more going for it, as far as activities & attractions, than just gambling; it's not a one-trick pony. There's no shortage of sites out there that will tell you what's available. You just have to decide if those things interest you and your group.
