Arrived PDX about an hour ago, couldn't fault United Airlines at all, although the inflight ent. was oldschool, 3 good movies to watch, plenty of free booze, a few spare seats to stretch out on, chatty and friendly passengers, and the flight attendants didn't miss a beat, worked all night and kept the booze flowing, will definitely fly with them again, only delay was a hold up at immigration, and a busted padlock, obviously the jar of vegemite set the alarm bells ringing.

Glad you had a good flight - empty seats always help and it's good when you get a good crew. I distinctly remember having a terrible crew on the flight home after having a good crew on the way over one time. It's been several years since I've flown with them as I stick to V Australia now, but their inflight entertainment needs a lot of work.

I didnt know the area around the white sox stadium was apparently pretty bad. I went to a game there via train a couple of weeks ago and it seemed fine. Werent all that many others going to/from the game either.

ive stayed downtown la on all 3 of my trips to the us and never had a problem (unless you count people asking for change a problem). Made plenty of walking trips to/from staples center and late night subway rides without issue. Always by myself, and im pretty much the opposite of physically intimidating

Just got back from a 7 week trip of Europe.

Have decided to do a 1 month trip of the states in October next year, will hopefully be with three mates, cant wait!

Will start booking accommodation and flights early next year... Anyone got any must sees, tips ?

With mates?

You must head to Vegas baby and then stay on the strip. Booze, stripper, party central, gambling and much, much more.

Then whist you are in Las Vegas, get to the Grand Canyon.

Well about 10 days in, and I've spent $1000 on everything. 3 Baseball games - Yankees v Red Sox, Phillies v Braves, Red Sox v Yankees, 3 Greyhound Bus trips, accomodation and food and drink. I've not really seen any paid sights yet, just walked about everywhere and seen free stuff. I've have been out 4 times and spend about $50 on each occasion. Its going okay I guess.

As far as cities go, Washington DC was great, just about all the sights are free apart from the Newseum. Philly was okay, a lot quieter than expected. I did like how all the sports stadiums are in the one place there though. The walk from the old town to the Museum (Rocky statue) and to Eastern State Penitentiary can be done in a day. And I loved Boston. Fenway Park, the Charlestown neighbourhood and Boston Public Garden were probably the highlights there.

Just got the NYC city pass and plan to see Brooklyn, Harrisburg (Bronx), Coney Island and take the obligatory Staten Island ferry in the next 5 days. Oh and I'm seeing 3 baseball games (Go Giants).

Fun times!

just briefly my experience.

lax is full if mexicans who sit next to their microwave.
disneyworld is very big and overrated. hot dog the size peanut $5. rides are no better than anything on the gold coast.
nba games are full of black scalpers out the front
people will be on your dick for tips, just carry your own bags.

my holiday there was mainly to see family and stayed in a country area in missouri. -5 degrees, wear gloves or u die. didn't go to vegas, just florida, la, missouri.

I have no idea what that means.

I didn't notice any when I was in Orlando, black or otherwise.

Can't say I've ever felt harassed by hopeful bag carriers or the like. The only thing that's bothered me were the bathroom attendants, where I almost felt obliged to tip them.

I literally saw a security guard stand next to an entrance with a microwave with a burrito. Could not look left without seeing a scalper in Orlando, but I only went once.

Downtown LA is shit. I was walking there with a group of 3 other males so we didn't have any problems however we did walk past a big black dude counting his roles of money just standing on the side of the road. Saw that and 3 hookers who walked past us and tried to hook us in. This was after a Kings game as well.

San Francisco agree completely. I got lost while walking around the city at night and literally if you walk 1 block too far it's full of homeless and dodgy looking people, but also the lights seem to be shit there as well. I was by myself so I wanted to get the hell out of there ASAP.
I walked around everywhere at night in San Francisco and felt perfectly safe. There were heaps of homeless and the occasional dodgy looking bloke, but nothing to get too worried about

Sounds like you had a good time :)

Disneyland is for the kids. I took my 5 yr old daughter there for the first time earlier this year and it was amazing to see her reaction to everything. It makes you appreciate it for what is really is.

I have been to plenty of US sporting events, never had an issue with scalpers.

The US is such a big place and amazes me every time I go back. I have been there 4 times and will go back again in a few years time.

My son went to Miami last year for Wrestlemania

Stayed in a hostel near the beach and when he came out in the morning there was a chalk outline of a body at the front door surrounded by police tape -drug-related shooting

He loved Miami though- party central

San Francisco's Tenderloin district is to be avoided -quite alarming "street life" at times

Jealous...

What are you doing over there? Just road tripping and holidaying?

Now 5 days. A tad more excited now.

Fly over and then straight to San Fran. San Diego.
then starts a 26 day Contiki tour. (Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, mid west, Grand Canyon.
Then on my own again doing La, Dallas, St. Louis, Louisville, Chicago, Boston, NYC, Washington, Vancouver, Seattle, Vegas, few days again in la and then back here.

Seeing lots of sports and doing all the touristy types of things in a bulk of those places.
Mixed up the travel with flights, train rides and some car hire.
Costing an arm and 2.5 legs. But doing it once and doing it in style.
Travelling on own, except for Contiki part of course.

How much will this trip cost, round figures?

Some advice needed - I am going over to the US in a few weeks. I will be catching up with Australian friends over there. They are also just on a global roaming so they are keeping thier number.

How do I call or SMS them? If I use the current number, it won't work. Do I need to put extra numbers or symbols before the number to reach them? Seems like a silly question but I can't get a simple answer.

Anyone been to ABQ? I'm looking for a place to stop between California and Texas, but don't want to get chopped up into little pieces by Mexican gang bangers.
Seriously, it won't happen, ppl need to stop believing the US is full of bad guys and gun toting murderers, the Mexicans are hard working friendly ppl, show them respect and they will repay it in kind, come to the States and soak it up.
