They lost 3 games all year coming up a grade and won the GF by 10 goals and still people bag them. Unbelievable.

Good point Banger. They have a really mature team (big bodies) and with the addition of a couple of recruits, and the retention of all their guns, they'll be competitive next season.

Yep. Let me spell out what many have been (and still are) are thinking - Oakleigh = AVERAGE side.

HBP can try to win as many frinds on this forum as he likes, Oakleigh do not compare to any of the last 4 sides to go up - Fitzroy, Ormond, Carey or Rupertswood.

Who cares, all they need to do is recruit and they will be strong. If they are average, Hampton are c rap and Old Mentonians are worse, with neither being the case.

Average.... Very average.... Extremely average.... Probably the worst football team since St Peters U15 in 2001.... and can you imagine them next year having to deal with a PREMIERSHIP hangover! I dunno how they managed to win a game this year. I feel for you Oakleigh, I truly do.

Great coach.
Great senior players.
Great kids coming through.
And a fantastic board.

I see stormy days ahead.

GIVE US A BREAK!

looks like mcgee could be out of job with old mentonians advertising for a new senior, reserve and unders coach.

is this a step backwards or forward for the club?

Might also be that they have a mandatory club constitutional requirement of advertising all coaching positions each year. Quite a few VAFA clubs do.

He took them from 7th to within a goal of promotion this year. Whether you agree or disagree with his approach and persona, he must be doing something right.

When the Rovers look back on the season overall (Grand Final result aside), I think they can be satisfied by what they were able to achieve. First, the Rovers went straight back up to C Section (and this was the main aim of the club), not many clubs in the VAFA can go straight back up after being relegated the year before. Secondly, the Rovers can look forward to a very good future, with a lot of young players ready to take the next step up into senior level, also seeing the Under 19s make the finals and go into a grand final. Finally, the Rovers restored pride and respect back to the football club, especially after what happened last year. If the Rovers can keep the core of the senior group and recruit well for next year in C Section, I think the Rovers will have a very good year ahead of them.

Benny is safe at OMs, 99.9% of VAFA clubs have it in their constitution that they have to advertise, it stops 'jobs for the boys'.

Do you know him BS? A few friends of mine who must frequent all grades tell me that he is not the sort the association really enjoy being associated with. Even some well known destinguished Mentonians believe the club would be far better served without him as a leading figure.

Specky is a different coach.. but it works.. how does a team go from 7th to 2nd?? and they only recuited one player. Ben McGee is gonna coach next year at the OM's and he will bring us a flag. He gets white line fever.. and is only trying to stick up for his young pups. lay off him.. we went one second, one point from c grade.. i recon he is pretty much safe...

if he was on ur team, u would see how much time he has put in.. its to point of being silly sometimes, he lives and breaths mentone. He has a bad record.. everyone knows that, but if he takes OM's to C Grade, i dont think anyone at the club cares how many noses are put out of joint....

Well done oakleigh..

Monkey, I do know him, he is an ex SKOB under 19 coach. I had a good chat to him Sat before the C Section game, is a passionate person who has a little bit of colorful language, then again so does Big Footys 2Crownies, I mean Tom Brain.
He showed me over a dozen texts from Hampton Rovers players following their victory over them in the prelim, they were disgraceful and certainly taint the Rovers club as a whole.
He is an easy target because he is coaching a club that is cast in the giant shadow of Acreman, who still wields a lot of power around the club and doesnt particularly like Benny. But, if the OMs losing culture is to change, Ben is the man to do it and guy like AA need to realise that their culture has too change, just like Old Camberwells incumbent coach had to do the same.

not sure where you got this number from BS...??

I just checked the ammo's webiste and there are only 5 clubs in A/B looking for coaches.. out of 20.. and 25 teams all up advertising, not sure how many clubs there are in the whole vafa but I'd say 70? It's a far cry from the 99.9% you mentioned....

granted clubs may advertise elsewhere, but I would have thought advertising through the VAFA would be up there on priorities..

If they don't need people to apply they wouldn't advertise it.. e.g. OI advertisment

I'll put my hand up to one of those. And if what I sent taints the clubs image then it's some pretty thin skin you've got there. Not sure what the others were sending, but after his pathetic antics at half time in the prelim and when he virtually walks us off the ground right up to the change rooms heckling us with "Who are Hampton Rovers?" after the round 2 loss he deserves to hear, "That's who the **** Hampton are you weak suck."
And what volumes does it speak of him calling several players back on Saturday night calling us chokers and the like? Plus the voice messages he was getting a female(sounded very much like the same female that kept answering his phone) to leave on our phones. And threatened us with his brother chasing us down. What a hero. Good luck to him. Can't even fight his own battles. Great representation of a footy club. There should be more like him.

And to whoever posted that comment about Leigh Fletcher not manning up on Bromley.... stupid! Granted Fletch plays very loose, Bromley was starting in a back pocket and switching up the ground from the centre bounce. Unfortunately for us it was a set up that we failed to counter early and worked very well for them. Kudos to Oakleigh. They set up well and executed even better. Clearly the better side won the day.

Mick,
If what you say is true and i trust that it is, then he should be shown the door.
It doesn't matter how good a coach he is behaviour like that will always bring him and his club undone in the long run.

dgradedale, yes everything Mick said there is true. To add to that, he also threatens opposition players before games (during warm-ups). I couldn't care what he does on the field, I wouldn't want those antics at my club. If he continues on next year like he did in 2007, he will continue to drag the reputation of Old Mentonians footy club down, which is a shame because they're a great club. I'm just glad we knocked him back as our coach. I've actually still got his "coaching philosophy" on file here, it's quite a laugh actually. I wonder where he copied & pasted it from?

Carey and Fitzroy won't be in C-Grade next season.
Needless to say Rupo and Ormond will both be right up there (AJAX as well).

It's not just about the Oakleigh's team on Grand Final Day, they have 6 months to improve their list, develop more young players etc.

The evenness of their team will ensure they won't bounce back to D1 in 2008.

just the fact that everyone is talking about Mcgee shows that he made opposition players focus on him at not the footy match. Rovers sending him abuse after the game, why wouldnt he send it back after a similar loss, well done to Oakliegh, Hampton D1 2009

Wipit keep your opinions to yourself when you haven't got a clue what took place. Clearly by the fact we beat OM's by 14 goals we weren't focusing our attention on him.

Magee is an imbicile. A frustrated little peanut who clearly holds a grudge for being overlooked for our position and carries on like a two bob watch dragging his club through the mud in the process.

As previously stated on this forum Old Mentonians are a fantastic club and guys like Big Adam Acerman and Tony Bournan are a credit to their club. I hope the right people make the right decisions and send the little germ to the scrap heap where he belongs.

Oakleigh will be fine.

They smashed us on the weekend. We were outcoached, and outplayed. Fair play to them. Time will tell how accurate some of these C Grade heros will be. I'd be pretty surprised if either side are fighting relegation next season.

My only gripe is their coaches view that we tried to drag their clubs name through the mud with the investigation that took place after our R18 clash. Four of the players attacked one of our youngest blokes in an unprevoked attack. I think we had every right to try get the culprit rubbed out.

Good luck to all and sundry next season. I'm hanging up the boots again and heading back to the UK. For what it's worth I'm tipping Bulleen Temp and the Oggers to make the 4 and fight for promotion.

Throw South Melbourne in the mix and you have one of the most intelligent posts i've read in a long time, well done Brenton!

It wasn't quite unprevoked... he threw the first one. The wrong bloke missed a semi due to bullshit evidence (knowingly or unknowingly provided by Hampton). It was Oakleighs word against Hamptons and the "Independant" adjudicator got it wrong.

Congratulations anyway on a great year im sure there will be many fantastic games between us rotten district clubs in the future.

PS. Oakleigh has changed its name to Old Oakleigh Grammar Krusherians.

Hi Harper,

Tell us about South Melbourne. What style of game are you playing?

Has the playing group changed much from your D3 days?

Have played you guys back then and remember some good battles.

Welcome to D1!

Silky, Harper will certainly give a better run down than me, but I saw Sth Melb play twice this year. Looked a pretty decent side to me - good mix of height and pace. Had a very handy small forward who kept kicking goals. Your typical district side really. I would think they would certainly push plenty of sides.

Its great to see them come up..those Southern Football League days must seem so long ago...

Two contrasting seasons that brought two flags to the club, '06's side went long and direct to Billy McGee, what ever Bill didn't mark Jack Cronan crumbed and goaled, it was predictable but deadly and was held together by a super tight defence. Bill retired after that flag and the team now has a larger spread of scoring options and still has a great defence. The midfield are a solid unit although we will be making a play for Chris Judd. CU is correct in that there is a good spread of talls and run, most blokes are between 22 - 27 and I wouldn't have thought many would walk from the club after back to back flags even with some $ on offer elsewhere. We're lucky in that we seem to attract players from the area that are good enough to make decent coin at St Kilda City or Port Colts but choose to play with their mates at a great old club in South. Many have come up through our Juniors.
