Twin Peaks creator David Lynch dies, aged 78

The acclaimed filmmaker also directed films Blue Velvet, The Elephant Man and Mulholland Drive.

Sad that we will enjoy no new material from this genius. Did well to get to 78 given he smoked like a chimney.

What are people's favourite works of his, and what about his style did you particularly like?


I liked his common thread of "life is not so rosy when you look beneath the surface". He was scathing about the idea of the "perfect America" - Twin Peaks and Blue Velvet were both set in picturesque, quaint small towns. Beautiful on the surface, but dodgy AF underneath.

I liked his visuals, I liked how he directed actors to interact in a characteristic pensive way, and above all I loved the weirdness.

Favourite work? Perhaps Mulholland Drive or some early Twin Peaks.

And of course who could forget Twin Peaks season 3, episode 8 - an amazing piece of avant garde television that only he could get away with doing.

So, what other favourites/thoughts do people have about this one of a kind artist?

Wow this is not something I was expecting. Lynch was a true artist who brushed the edge of the the mainstream and probably got me more into arthhouse movies.

Blue Velvet and Lost Highway were both excellent, but I remember being just so blown away and punched in the guts by Mulholland Drive.

But so many people talk about his reality-warping film-making. My favourite Lynch movie is probably "The Straight Story", and is easily in my top 10 ever. Just a simple, heartwarming movie about connecting with family and the friendship of strangers. I cried in the theatre.

Time to re-connect.

Sad day in the culture, he meant so much to many people and was very influential

Mulholland Drive & Lost Highway are the standouts for me, but I’m also very partial to Wild at Heart and TP/FWWM/Return

still haven’t caught up with Inland Empire, so I’ll make that a priority this year

I'll remember him well thanks to Dune 1984 and not in a negative way either. Fell in love with the Dune franchise because of his contribution and it definitely inspired Denis Villeneuve's version.

RIP Lynch.

Give Dennis a rough outline of the script and a pile of coke and let him cook

Certainly one of a kind, a master craftsman. There's one of his short films that freaked me out for days after watching it, cant recall the name, don't want to!

I'm looking forward though to catching up again with MD & BV in coming days, both are spectacular flicks.

Yes this scene has that magical Lynch quality. Very similar to the "Club Silencio" scene in Mulholland Drive - the lighting, the miming, the stunned audience. Rebekah Del Rio's voice singing "llorando" - filling the Astor Theatre is one of my best cinema experiences ever:

Spot on re the Club Silencio scene, first time I watched it the In Dreams scene was first thing that came to mind.

It would be hard to go past Eraserhead for weirdness.

David Lynch was my favourite artist. I saw 'Eraserhead' in London at The Electric Cinema Club in Notting Hill(like The Valhalla in Richmond) in 1979. It is still my favourite film of all time and always will be. Lynch hasn't done much film work in the 21st century, but at least we got 18 hours of TV with 'Twin Peaks: The Return'. Some truly stunning work there, with episode 8 being the strangest hour of television ever produced.

Top 5 director of all time for mine.

He did surrealism so well but then he did a couple of amazing more tender movies in the straight story and the elephant man

The straight story is probably my favourite of his, makes me cry every time I watch it, closely followed by mulholland drive which is probably his most known that or blue velvet I guess

Twin peaks was revolutionary and I loved s3 as well as probably some of his best work when he came back to it after all those years

A decent musician as well it has to be said.

A true artist and will be missed.
