Back in the day when commercial networks cared about the news.

That first 60 minutes team of George Negus, Ray Martin, Ian Leslie and (later) Jana Wendt that Gerald Stone put together was all about serious journalism (with a bit of sex appeal thrown in) and it rated its socks off.

I think our politicians were far more accountable than now because of it.

Growing up in the 80's 60 minutes was my introduction to serious journalism. No cheerleading your 'side' of the political divide like Sky/Fox/ABC etc. or trash pretend journalism like A Current Affair or Today Tonight. It's a pity a serious impartial show like it today, wouldn't get the viewers (or be appealing to any of the networks), as it's more needed then ever.

Sad to hear George passed away a few weeks ago. I didn't see this thread when he passed away.

I was surprised to hear he was 82. I thought he was 10 years younger but that was probably the general Negus affect of being so energetic and active.

Dementia would have been a terrible way for a man of the world and wordsmith like George to suffer from, in his last couple of years or so.

He married fellow journo Kirsty Cockburn - daughter of well known/respected Advertiser journo Stewart Cockburn who was Bob Menzies press secretary for a few years in the 50's. It was a classic case of opposites attract, but then again, George seemed to become less robust, when he left 60 minutes.

He was a very keen soccer fan and David Hill appointed him to the board of the then Soccer Australia in 1995. Football Australia paid this tribute.

I remember Kirsty Cockburn being a reporter on a Current Affair when Willesee was the host.
