Former Geelong champ Ken Newland passed away.

Newland played 198 games with Geelong and 18 with Footscray.
Born 4 May 1949 (age 75). 187 cm (6'2"), 85Kg (187lb).

He was just 21 years of age when he brought up his 100th league game, only Tim Watson and Garry Young have reached the milestone at a younger age. via Wikipedia

One of the players I sort of liked first, as an 8 y/o in 1976, I realised Geelong had Ken Newland and John Newman, so in the radio the names sounded fairly similar. A contemporary of Michael Turner as well, at least for four seasons as a Cat and his one as a Dog in '76.....still reckon it was interesting Bill coached the Dogs that year and Geelong ceded both Newland and Bluey Hampshire (also departed) to Footscray. A classy and I think a very Geelong-style player, maybe built along the lines of Ken Hinkley. 75 isn't particularly old especially when one is entering his 57th year, and a reminder that mortality awaits us all. Vale Ken Newland.

Was a nice player to watch- skilled, a bit laconic, not hugely physical, but really classy and dangerous if not manned up.
75 is quite young these days.
Bit sad the Cats we have lost in recent times

Yep very smooth mover Ken one that would adapt to todays game RIP.Hope you are right about 75 Vdubs I'm past that.

Packed his groceries once as a kid working in Safeway. Nice guy..
I remember how big he seemed in person yet looked quite average on the field next to the other players….gave me a perspective on the actual sizes of the players you didn’t get as a spectator watching from afar..
A skilled player he certainly was. Often went missing for large periods but had a few mates..

Am I correct that he wore number 3?
It was such a long time ago. My memory is that he was a bit like ollie Henry. i.e. Float across and take a nice mark one minute and then kind of have no presence for a while.

Definitely #3.
We've had a few great #3's, Bartel probably the pick ahead of Bairstow.
A forward like OH will not be in the play all the time anyway, but OH showed in the Prelim, he is going to be a valuable match winner/game turner for us.

Thats what I meant. Newland had moments where he looked like he could win the game on his own. From memory.
