VALE Ken Tierney

The passing of Ken Tierney has been announced. Ken was 88 years of age.

Ken played 160 games for Port Adelaide and was a true legend of the Club.

I had the good fortune to watch many if not all Ken's games from 1958 onwards.

Ken played mostly on a wing.

RIP.

Ken Tierney made his league debut in 1954, and at the end of that season was on a wing in the Magpies’ stirring three-point Grand Final win over West Adelaide. He later also played in the club’s 1956, 1958 and 1959 premiership teams. At his best during the late 1950s, he represented South Australia at the 1958 Melbourne carnival, and played a total of four interstate games.

According to the article Ken favoured crisp short passing which made Fos overlook him a bit as he wanted long kicks to position. Otherwise he would have played 200 games.

That's an interesting note Ford as the 'stab pass' was a bullet like drop kick and a common weapon yesteryear.

Back in the late 1950's when I was taken to a training session at Alberton Ken was one of a number of players that night who rode there on a push bike, and I can still remember he had his brown kit bag (gladstone bag) sitting between the handle bars.

Just curious - where did Ken live at that time? Though much younger, I lived in the same block as Teddy Whelan and Bob Fabian. I had this idea that Ken lived nearby.

My memory of Ken Tierney was his speed, agility, and accurate short passes.

I remember him mainly being on the wing, with Don Thompson on the other wing.

He came into the the seniors, I think, after Harold McDonald hung up his Magpie boots.

Heroes, every one of ‘em.

How sad it is that Ken Tierney left us without seeing that extra invaluable premiership.

Did Ken play in a premiership in every grade at Port?
Think John Robinson was the only one that was known to have done it.

I was correct then. Ted Whelan and Bob Fabian were a few doors further west.
