Vale Meatloaf

The mighty Meatloaf (Michael (Marvin) Lee Aday) has passed away aged 74.

He was literally a larger than life performer, one of the biggest rock stars of the 1970s and his massive hit album Bat Out of Hell was the soundtrack to so many young people of the era. Australia is recognised as the breakthrough market for the album, which had been rejected by every major record label before being signed by Steve Popovich at Cleveland records on the basis of a 20 second intro.

One of my all time favourite performers, his stage shows were legendary.

Not only a rock star, he was an accomplished musical theatre performer and appeared is something like 65 movies, most notably Rocky Horror Picture Show and Fight Club.

Vale Big Man, time to join Jim Steinman in the Rock n Roll Valhalla.

Sadly he couldn't quite hit the sustain in the fantastic 1998 Classic Albums - The making of Bat out of Hell.

Available here and highly recommended if only for Rudgren's biting put downs and Karla DeVito's vivid descriptions of having to perform 'You took the words right out of my mouth' with Meatloaf's tongue halfway down her throat every night.

Have the classic Making of Bat Out of Hell doco on DVD and rip it out once a year for a viewing.

It's an incredible story with an astonishing cast of characters. It never gets old.

Jim Steinman recounting his whiny plea to Todd Rundgren for a motorcycle sound effect in the title track and Todd unleashing it from a guitar solo.
