I saw him interviewed about 2 months back and he didn't look great.
He was one cocky guy.

Boy could he run.

Met him in the change rooms once. He was in the shower just asking me questions. Naked obviously. Pretty bloody confronting for a kid :)

I loved Michael Turner as a player. He was my favorite Cats player of that era. So gutted to hear he has passed away. My deepest condolences to his family and many, many friends. He was not just a great player in his day but a great man who helped develop many successful AFL footballers through his role at the Geelong Falcons. The world has lost a truly great one today.

Totally agree. A shining light in that era, and his battles with the late Robbie Flower were a thing of beauty. Always excelled in State games too. My favourite Cat until Ablett senior took that spot. Used to run into him many times in Ocean Grove and he was always friendly. More recently, living in Lorne, he appeared to be at peace with his illness, and survived a bit longer than most do with that dreaded diagnosis.
As you said, his impact on GFC, and then mightily so with the Falcons, certainly makes him a Geelong immortal.

My memory of that era is now hazy, but did Ray Card play the other wing to Turner?
Scratcher Neale, some others in cameo roles like Jeff Cassidy, Ablett snr; Card mainly hbf.
Mark Yeates played a bit on the wing in his early years before hamstring injuries.

Really sorry to hear this. He's been my neighbour in Lorne for the last 8 years or so. I live a few doors up from him.

He fitted in well to the town and was a big supporter of the local footy club.

I didn't have much to do with him but he was always a good, no nonsense kind of guy. When my Aunt was sick with cancer about 10 years ago, he spent a lot of time at the hospital giving support to my uncle. Everyone in the family really appreciated that.

I was shocked when I heard things had taken a turn for the worse, and totally bummed to hear the news today. RIP.

Yeah, I was the same. Back in the day, when we wore duffel coats with our favorite player's number, mine had 'nine' on the back in honor of the great Mick Turner.

Mick tells a story about that . . . all the kids and young women wore number 9 but the week after Ablett made his debut, they had pulled the number off and replaced it with 5 😆

After Scratcher, it was Lunn.
Which was why I was in the change rooms. To get the signature of Lunn and they were showering side by side.

Also, opposition teams absolutely tried to expose him.

Rick Barham used to torch him.
And Flower was just out of this world as a player. I dont know why he stayed at Melbourne. He's in the top 10 that I've ever seen. It was almost Flower vs the other team back then.

I don’t remember Barham and Turner ever facing each other. It was often talked about as they were considered two of the best wingmen for several seasons.

A very sad loss. Made a great contribution not just in his playing days but to the wider Geelong football set up particularly in pathway opportunities for kids coming through. Vale Mick.

Having been a bit obsessed with MT as a player, watched nearly all his games, I never saw Barham torch him.
They were good mates.
In fact, more times than not, Turner would rise to the occasion and have the better of all his rivals- Wood, Raines, Schimma, Neagle, Hawkins, even Flower was a 50-50 situation.
He was a big occasion player, and his best was not always on show, and he admitted he hated wet windy bogs.
But at the G, in a final or State game or home & away, he was brilliant.

9 is my favourite number- it's magical for numerical reasons- but Turner wearing it certainly was icing on the cake.
