ADELAIDE onballer Nathan van Berlo is in a race against the clock to be fit for round one after suffering an acute tear in the plantar fascia in the sole of his right foot.

Crows club doctor Andrew Potter said van Berlo was likely to miss at least four weeks.

Van Berlo, who is believed to have sustained the injury at training on the weekend, has not missed a game since round 16, 2006.

Not sure if it's been covered here yet, but something to take into account.

Agreed.

He was one of the ones I kept changing around... him and Gibbs. Now there's a definite reason to pick Gibbs ahead of him.
Its gonna hurt you cos Gibbs wont improve on his average at all and thus will be a bit of a bust. He aint gonna sustain an average above 90 with carazzo, scotland, stevens, simpson, judd and murphy in the midfield. Just wont happen.

At least 5 options around that price that are far better options. Brent Stanton is the obvious one.

Good luck convincing the BF masses of that!

I for one believe Gibbs shows good value as in the last 10 or so games he averaged 100 when his role was changed from a shut down/tagging role to a full on midfielder with the occassional run-with role. With another pre-season under his belt he could be unleashed and score in a similar fashion to Murphy in '08.

Gibbs & Boak are my pick at that price range.

Seems like NVB & Mackay have stolen all the attention while other crows midfielders have flown comparatively under the radar...

What??? oops I mean, Yeeees.....yooou're...riiight... I'm not getting Gibbs either ;)

Better now than during the season. :thumbsu:

I have VB ATM but I'm refusing to take risks with any injuries (was burnt by them last season) so will trade him out before the season starts.

I'm going to see how Masten goes in the Challenge matches, if he's not bad I'll swap VB out for him and use the $ difference for a few upgrades across the field.

Not sure about Boak, doesn't appeal to me for some reason. Will probably end up eating my words, but one sideways midfield move looks less appealing than a (small) mid downgrade with some upgrades in the backs and forwards.

Oh dear - hopefully his fitness wont take too much of a hit!

Lakey will not be very happy..
What? I wont be very happy? :p

He was one i was seriously considering yes, and was likewise switching him in and out a bit with gibbs - think he is very durable, was smashing timetrials, has a few extra pre seasons under his belt and is more experienced than gibbs. Gibbs has more upside IMO, but i felt a tad safer with van berlo, so it was going to be a tough decision really. I did really like him though - averaged 98 after round 8 or so until the end of the season! Thats incredible! Was even thinking about having him as my 4th mid. But, to be honest, im more disappointed for the man himself - he was smashing the TTs and looked good for a great season - annoyed that this may hamper that.

This really puts me off though, and im quite happy with my mids now anyway - but im still not sure if i will start a rookie, so that i can gain from all the mid range value in the mids.

more importantly folks does this mean we will see a MID rookie take his place.. for at least first couple of rounds..? Perhaps a Ottens or a Dangerfield.. ??

I believe that chris knights is looking better and better with the ageing adelaide midfield and now there injuries. Not that im willing to risk on him just yet. VB is a hard runner, but knights and vince arn't far behind. Also we must look at the position of the crows this year, i personally cant see them making the eight, the foreward line just isnt there. Any crows in your team this year, will need to be absolute guns and due to VB's price of about 380k and his now injury along with his teams form, i'd say it was a too bigger risk, especially with b.gibbs being around the same price.

Sure Gibbs has a higher ceiling than NVB, but van berlo runs forever, the coach loves him, he's not going to get tagged and he's not likely to be affected by defensive/forward rotations. I picked Gibbs over VB in the first place but I would have thought it was around 60/40 before - now obviously it's much in Gibbs' favour.

I think we will do well enough this year that it's worth picking up our midfielders - even if we don't make the 8, our midfield has always been our strength, due to their work ethic and fitness. The likes of Thommo and Knights will do just fine this year. If anything I'd be a bit wary of Petrenko (backline rotations) and Walker (supply?), but as rookies they are still worthwhile pickups.

Pretty devastated by this, i was going to have him, Gibbs and Boak as my 3 best mids. It now seems i will have to find someone else. When ever my side gets set i take an injury or something happens.

Knights..............!

Concerns over his durability and TOG. Only 69% TOG...shanks a fair few but the classic DT'er.

He did miss a half due to the hamstring tear against Carlton, and Craig's generally conservative when it comes to getting players back to full match fitness.

The injuries are a worry though.

Also interesting to note that when Knights averaged 113 over those five weeks, Thompson only averaged 78.

Would be nice to get a four or five week sample with all of Adelaide's midfielders playing, but the lack of one means a lot will be left up to guesswork.
