Here is my collection of all the VFL/A Teams and Jumpers. Firstly here are the teams that have competed in the VFL/A. Those highlighted in gold are those 21 clubs that are currently competing in the Victorian Football League.

Here is the Premiers of each years competition. Where two teams are named, it was when the VFA had two divisions, between 1961 and 1988. The team with the * after the team name was the 2nd Division Premiers. All premiers are listed below from Carlton's premiership in 1877 up until Werribee's 2024 premiership.

Teams will be listed with Today's teams listed first, then they will be listed down in the reverse order they left the competition with the most recent first, with the Founding Teams of the Victorian Football Association listed together after all clubs are listed.

Obviously a lot of research and effort has gone into this and that's great, kudos to you. But if the information is ever going to migrate to Mero's site (which is an achievable goal for someone undertaking such a task) then it needs to be fleshed out a little more.

I'm assuming you have dates for the jumpers that you would have compiled when you did the research, if you could put those in then that'd be cool. I'm not really a fan of the faux logos in the name of uniformity, sometimes history is ugly, just because it might look cleaner in a thread to have everyone in the same shield doesn't mean you should. In fact it just makes the Port Melb logo stand out more.

I'm also interested in the details behind some of the guernseys, for instance that white Essendon one with the logo, was that a clash jumper? When was that worn? There are a few guernseys there that seem interesting but have no context.

These pictures have been a few years in the making. After putting them on this board and a couple of others I have received pictures from others showing that the clubs have worn other jumpers. An example of those is below:

Some of these I have asked when did they happen, and the people that sent them don't know. Except for the Denis Pagan Yarraville picture it is hard to put an actual date to the photo. What I try to do is to present the history of the VFA/VFL Teams as much as possible. As has been said on other threads, the history of VFA clubs haven't been kept.

What Mero has done in pictures for the AFL clubs is amazing, and I don't think that my efforts compare to his. However, he has not had to track down images of about 52 VFA/VFL teams, with the history of those clubs being not available. Trying to find the colours and design of the South Williamstown jumper wasn't getting anywhere, all I have found out is that Williamstown changed their colours from black and gold to blue and gold after the merger.

I found some pictures of the Ballarat teams in the VFA last weekend.


These are the clubs that played in the VFA, but I don't know if they wore these in the VFA. What I have created is something that best represents what may have been the clubs jumpers.

The Essendon jumper was produced by the VFL a guess because a similar jumper was produced for Box Hill. They seem to be clash jumpers that were made for the club to wear. These jumpers are both white jumpers with a black or brown upper on the front, and the club logo below. They seem to be clash jumpers that were quickly made because the club didn't provide one in time.

The creation of logos that fit into the old VFA logo design came about with the logos of older clubs not existing. So I used the VFA shield border to create them one. It also seemed like some on this board liked them so I made shield logos for all the clubs.

These have hopefully presented people with the history of the clubs of the VFA/VFL which haven't been given before. If they weren't presented here in this form the knowledge of these clubs and their uniforms could have disappeared.

When I am putting these together I have always asked for visual proof of the jumper. I will look at those pages you have mentioned.

As you have mentioned in the past about the cigarette cards that were painted in Germany with the design of the jumpers. I used the pictures which I have shown above because they are the only thing that I have found that has a representation of the three Ballarat clubs jumpers. With only one of those clubs still surviving (Ballarat) and the other two not surviving WWII there is nothing else to go on.

In the 1878 The Footballer Ballarat are listed as
Scarlet and white striped jersey, blue knickerbockers, and cap, and scarlet hose.
Stripes in 1878 are what we today call hoops.
The knitting machinery was not available to make vertical stripes.
So they'd have been the same as Albert Park.

Ballarat Imperial, in 1878, are listed as
Red and white jersey, with blue sash, Blue knickers, red stockings, and blue cap.
Before 1878 they were known as Ballarat Gallatea.

South Ballarat were known as Albion Imperial and wore:
1877 Blue knickerbockers, Blue & White striped hose, White jacket and White Cap with Blue Bar.
1878 Blue knickers, Blue and White cap, Blue and White striped jersey and hose.
(I don't know when they adopted Red & Blue, perhaps it was when they became South Ballarat in 1884; which would then mean their few games in the VFA would be in different colours and perhaps design. However I would strongly suggest the colours would be Red and Blue hoops, not Red with Blue sleeves.)

Have altered Ballarat Imperial, South Ballarat, East Melbourne, West Melbourne and have altered the positions of Essendon and Geelong. Wikipedia had five clubs in the first season of the VFA, Albert Park, Carlton, Hotham and Melbourne.
