VFL 2021

I appreciate getting a stand alone on TV, but I don't know how fair it feels for the Bullants to play at Marvel on a Thursday night. It's a tough ground to play when you are used to suburban grounds, and the time slot isn't family friendly at all. Also can't see many neutrals tuning in to watch what will most likely be a one sided thrashing by a polarizing team.

I'd keep those fixtures to the reserves sides.

Southport look the goods.
Entirely possible Southport starts the 2021 VFL season 5-0. GWS reserves, North reserves and Aspley are their next three fixtures.

I wasn't overly impressed by the GWS reserves the other night when they played the Bulldogs and they'll likely be considerably weaker without Jesse Hogan due to his probable call up to the AFL team. North's reserves look awful so that should be an easy win for Southport at home and another game against Aspley in Queensland should end well for the Sharks.

Mid season draft could hurt Southport, though. I'm sure a few of their players are already being looked at by AFL clubs.

Willy goaled after 18 seconds and looked a class above to lead by 6 goals to 1 at QT.

Werribee stabilised in the 2nd and started to win their share of possession after HT. Got within 3 goals mid last qtr and closed to 11 points at the end. Willy happy to hear the siren with only 3 goals after qt.

Another 15 minutes may have seen a different result. Good game on a damp surface.

Lights below par, shouldn't be playing night games at Chirnside.

Hard to get a real gauge of where teams are at this early on but you would almost pencil the Sharks in for finals at this point. Pretty sure their draw isn't overly difficult (which will be a huge factor in who makes it, they should have brought conferences in because playing someone 3 times in a 16 round season is stupidly unbalanced)

GWS are pretty top heavy, their ring-ins or whatever we call them nowadays will struggle against more seasoned campaigners, a lot of youth in their ranks and I can see your Southports and Port Melbournes (jury is still out if they're any good) of the world taking them to task.

North and the Bullants will raffle the spoon I'd suspect.

Wasn't the most thrilling game I've watched but Werribee will definitely be rueing that poor start, similar to PM in Round 1. Their defence held up reasonably well from what I half-watched but their transition/rebound to attack wasn't great, although the slippery conditions would have something to do with that. Not sure what to make of their list and where they are at but have shown something in both games.

I heard on the weekend that Coburg didn’t release any players back there local clubs during a bye weekend. Very ordinary Coburg! Dont local clubs pay for players registration and insurance yet Coburg won’t release players. Poor form Coburg!

Just curious, but where do the Vic teams top up players come from? Is it zoned, eg Coburg gets players from EDFL and NFL only, or do they come from all over Melbourne suburbs and clubs? Whatever the case, this is pretty ordinary from Coburg.

All over. Most play VAFA/NFL/EDFL

Yeah, Coburg's list is drawn from a pretty wide spread of local clubs:

Just to paint the full picture for all VFL clubs, Southport and Aspley drew all their players from QAFL clubs in the past. Southport players are spread amongst the four Gold Coast QAFL clubs (Broadbeach, Labrador, Palm Beach Currumbin and Surfers Paradise) and Aspley takes players from the remaining seven Brisbane and Sunshine Coast clubs (Maroochydore, Morningside, Mount Gravatt, Noosa, Reland-Victoria Point, Sherwood and Wilston Grange). I believe interstate players are assigned local clubs through the QAFL Mini Draft, or at least they were in the old NEAFL competition.

I suppose we'll find out if the standalone Queensland clubs release their players to the QAFL teams in two weeks from now when Aspley have a bye. My guess is they probably will release them, or at least some of them.

no more mini draft, clubs had to sign them as free agents - even their own juniors. Ridiculous really.

they can't release all their players in a bye, there are rules preventing this. (which is good, as we don't want our state league more compromised than it already is)

How does that work with the ammos? I thought they’d be banned from playing in a semi-pro league like the VFL.
The VAFA Clubs don't pay them, the VFL clubs do.

Can you confirm this please eth-dog?

Also there's this:

If none were released, how did 20 players play at their local clubs?

This player didn’t play round 1 with Coburg did he??? Cmon mate it’s poor form from Coburg
You said none. There were nearly half the list that did and it took like 2 minutes of research. Just take your medicine and shut up
