TBH, we never looked like winning that. Our first half was tactically inept, and then it rained for most of the 3rd and the wind was a bout a 2 goal breeze. And in the last it went back to a 5 goal gale. However, Port definitely looked the better side.
We were unable to use handball to release a player and then use it, in contrast to Port whose handball and ball use was much more effective.
HTF we gave them as much space in their forward line as we did in the 2nd I just don't understand. We watched them crowd our forward line for the whole first quarter and then break into their own vacant 50 whenever they could. We just didn't make any attempt to do the same thing to them in the second.

Quick summary on our AFL listed players -

Bird - Business as usual for Bird, In & under all day, driving the ball forward at all costs. I would have him as one of our best on today (that's not saying a lot tbh). Worked tirelessly at the stoppages.

Hocking - Was playing off the half back which I don't think he is suited to at all. Struggles when he is in space, disposal is ordinary, and his reading of the ball is not great.

Morgan - Still a lot of work to do, no real offence generated from any of his disposals, but it was nice to see him having a hand on his man at most times. a nice holding the ball & a nice intercept play where he didn't take disposal (purely from pressure) were the highlights of his game.

Redman - Struggled to find the ball, or work himself into a position that even gives him a chance to get the ball.

Clarke - Found plenty of it, but not very effective, if it at all. His contested work is impressive. Kicking was OK today. Faded in and out of the game.

Draper - Felt like our coaches didn't really know what to do with him with TBC playing F/T ruck. Tried him up forward but he had no awareness. They put him into defence in the last 10 mins, and did OK. Probably only played half the game.

Stewart - Solid game, one of our better players, but didn't kick them when we needed them. Leading patterns I50 were the best I've seen from him.

Long - Was one of our worst. His disposal was really really poor, a handful of turnovers, and there were 3 or 4 moments where he would try and dance his way out of trouble, only to be made silly as he is been caught hold the ball.

Mutch - Not as excited as everyone else seems to be about him. Was fine today though. Most pleasant thing about his performance is that he seems to get himself into really good positions and reads the play well.

Begley - Some nice long kicks in the first, but didn't really get his hands on it after that.

Merrett - Not sure why they are persisting with him in the backline. If he is going to be a VFL player, the VFL team would benefit a lot more playing him up forward. Had some nice intercept play, but nothing really else.

TBC - I wanna say he dominated the ruck, but to very little advantage? Better work around the ground, and nice to see him be more physical and take the body.

Smack - Thought he was disappointing today. (I have nothing to offer about his game actually other than he seems to struggle as a F/T forward)

Think our depth is grossly overstated on these boards.

No team in the competition has a fourth choice key defender the caliabre of Hartley, not sure anyone have a third ruck at McKernans level and only a few with a third/fourth key forward better than Stewart. We also have depth in small forwards and small defenders. We have leadership and balance problems which leads to poor results at VFL but as individuals a lot of them are capable of AFL level.

They tried hard but we're lacking the skill and cohesion that Port had. Ports ball use and skill in tight was far superior than ours and they played the conditions better. Number 10 was best on doing the grunt work getting it out to guys who used the ball very well such as number 19. We couldn't string together the chains that they managed all day. There ball use going forward with the wind was also much better.

Mutch was quieter after quarter time but did enough to get his promotion next game. Reads the play well and has a nice balance between inside and outside.

Clarke - conditions suited his play allowing him to win a lot of hard ball in tight but in contrast to Ports midfield his possessions. Lacked impact. Toiled hard but a long way off.

Merritt - played pretty well as a defensive sweeper.

Morgan - liked his game. Defensively sound and used it better than most.

TBell - Won a lot of hit outs but was useless in every other aspect. Too slow and lacked intensity. Had a couple of opportunities to crunch a couple of players he had blind sided but chose instead to put in a lacklustre jog.
It is the same problem in the ones but we don't do anything about it. If you don't have a dominant ruck you are better of going with McKernan and hurt the opposition in other ways. Why not when the midfield is going to get beaten regardless of hit outs? Melbourne did it to us last week with Pederson and Watts and they towelled TBell up, kicking 4 goals on him.

Draper - don't think he touched the ball. McKernan was getting very frustrated in the 3rd when the ball was locked inside our half for a prolonged period and he couldn't get on for Draper.

McKernan - as per normal hit up hard and offered a target but conditions and delivery didn't help. Tried hard and tried to put pressure on when we didn't have the ball.

Stewart - same as above. Toiled hard and offered a target all day. Kicked well with limited opportunities.

Redman - quiet game. Think he snapped our only goal in the last.

Hocking - solid in midfield and in a small defender role.

Langford - why didn't he play?

Long - battled hard after butchering the ball early. Some excellent defensive efforts.

Sheesh. It's 4 weeks into the season.

Our depth is over rated
Uyzal/Younnan are good honest role players in a good team.
Michael Hartley is solid but no star you have led the masses to believe.
We are 1 - 3 in the VFL. Hardly inspiring 'premiership fancy' status.

The depth is completely over rated.

When the seniors can't win games you know the depth isn't there.

The only time you can say you have good depth is when the AFL team is winning games of footy and when players get injured they keep winning by bringing in VFL players. Like the bulldogs last year they had good depth.

Close to the most inaccurate post I've read on here, which is really saying something.

Your calls on Hartley, McKernan (especially), Stewart and our small defenders are just totally and completely wrong.

Fanta and Walla are great (perhaps elite), but who are our 3rd, 4th and 5th options (as small forwards)?

We over possessed the ball. It's like our boys have SFA idea of how to play in the wet.

Haven't they learned over the years when playing on suburban mud pits?

One goal we conceded from the kick out, Heath hocking speared a kick to a player in between two port forwards that was absolutely humming. It required an overhead mark. Understandably, our bloke spilled it, because it was wet as a Justin Bieber concert.

It went right back over Heath's head.

It's like, get a damn clue.

4 games into the season.

Hartley dominated VFL for 2 years
Uysal dominated as an inside midfielder in a shit side for 4 years.
Younan was a top 10 player in a shit side for 6 years.

We're 1-3, yeah. 2 years ago where we finished top 4 we were 2-3 I'm fairly sure (and were 2 kicks off a GF where the side we lost to won the GF by 12 goals). We have a good fixture coming up as well, Geelong and Richmond, two sides we rarely lose to in the VFL and Coburg as well. I'll back my judgement and we'll see where we're at at the end of the season.

It's easy to deny but if you take the time and analyse other lists, that's how you determine where your depth ranks.

Most lists don't have more than two ready rucks, WCE, Geelong the exceptions. The Dees lost two and had to Pederson who is 193cm in there and I'd take Smack before Spencer as well. Along with Archie Smith, Brooksby, O'Brien, Soldo, Phillips, Pittonet, Naismith, Lobbe, Clarke, Holmes, Simpson, Cox probably more too.

Name the fourth talls on lists that are better than Hartley.

Again most lists don't have more than three-four small forwards on their lists, in addition to yours we have Green, Colyer and Howlett (plus Zaharakis off a HFF this year) not great players by any stretch, but depth isn't to reference talent. It's to say if every team had injuries how far could you cover their position with suitable players.

Our depth is very good, but if you don't have elite players putting consistent performances, your role players will struggle regardless of how capable they are.

VFL match report v Port Melb

Natalie MacGregor May 6, 2017 5:38 PM

Essendon VFL has slipped to one and three from its first four games after going down to Port Melbourne by 26-points on Saturday at Frankston Oval.

The Dons started strongly, heading into the first break with a 20-point lead but it wasn’t enough to hold off the fast finishing Boroughs.

James Ferry was impressive in defence, getting the Bombers out of trouble on multiple occasions. He finished with 25 disposals.

“I thought Jimmy Ferry down back was outstanding all day,” Performance Coach Mark Corrigan said.

James Stewart finished with three goals, including one incredible snap out of the pack that bounced straight through the middle.

“James Stewart up forward I thought was our best forward all day,” Corrigan said.

Dylan Clarke was a standout across the field, he finished with 28 disposals.

“Clarke on the ball was clean and showed that even in these conditions he can still be clean and play like it is dry,” Corrigan said.

The Bombers major downfall was in the second quarter when Port Melbourne kicked four consecutive goals in the first eight minutes of play.

The Boroughs led at half time by seven-points.

The lead changed twice in the third quarter, Port Melbourne finishing two-points ahead at the third break.

Essendon kicked one goal to Port Melbourne’s three in the final term which gave them a 26-point lead at the final siren.

Inaccurate kicking was again a contributor to the final score. The Dons were impressive across the field but failed to reward their hard work on the scoreboard.

Corrigan said there are still positives that came out of it.

“The positives of the game were similar to what we’ve seen in previous weeks which is our effort and intensity,” Corrigan said.

“We are not naïve to the fact that we don’t want to be one and three.

“Looking at it from a positive point of view is that we have been in a winnable position in all our games.

“We put ourselves in this position and we have to work hard to get out of it.

“Now it’s just about refining some of the little things like being able to listen to instructions, being able to convert, improving our execution.

“That’s where we need to improve in order to turn these losses into wins.

“We are doing plenty right but it’s just being able to finish our work off.

“That will be the focus again, getting that consistency in those areas.”

Disposals: O'Brien 39, Clarke 28, Bird 27, Ferry 25

Goals: Stewart 3, Boyse 2, Mutch, O'Brien, Peters
