Knights, Rose, Davies, Sowersby and Becker are emergencies for Metro.

Barnes, Batson, Collins, Anderson and Leslie emergencies for Country.

Surprises? I reckon Blair Tournier was a little stiff, and Knights is unlucky not to be in the final 25.

But the big surprise has to be Marc Murphy going from not even making the squad of 44 a fortnight ago to becoming a first team selection.

I'll do a very quick summary on each player soon.

Just a rough guide, nothing too detailed. Feel free to disagree.

Sowersby - Medium sized defender. DC: Doubtful.
10 Patrick SOWERSBY 10/08/1986 195cm 84kg

Medium sized defenders seem to be getting taller?
Is there a typo in there somewhere?

Interesting list of 30.

My mail today from the MGS v CG APS game is that Xavier Leslie has been cut from the final list of 25. This info came from someone very close to him who is not a happy camper.

Leslie was credited with 54 possessions in MGS easy win.

Chris Gooley has also been cut from Metro for those that didn't notice. Chris, his brother Sam and Leslie completely dominated from FB to FF today.

Can't believe some of the guys left in the list of 30 for Vic Metro ahead of Chris Gooley.

Sowersby and Quinten to start with. Do me a favour!!!!

Still, it's not all bad news......... maybe everyone will forget about Chris and Carlton can pick him up 2nd round.

I agree Weaver and if what he suggests has any truth to it, then that's a big disapointment and question mark over the Vic Metro/Country selectors.

My question/statement is this......

There are a great many players from both the Vic Metro and Vic Country teams that will not be drafted this year. That is a dead set gimme.

If Chris Gooley doesn't get picked up by someone I'll bare my backside in Bourke Street.

Jeezzzz. He's 194cm, 87kg, plays forward or back, can mark, kick well on either feet, has smarts and moves as well as any 194cm kid getting around. What more do they want. Put 10 kg on him and he will play 200 games.

Okay he hardly got a touch in the Vic Metro v Vic Country trial game but he had a few mates. He played 1/2 a game in terrible conditions and not many big men had good games.

So was the team picked on current form or past performances?

Herrington was not sighted in the trial game and has done little all year in the TAC. Quniton did zip and was joined by Sowesby at that low level. Rose before Iacobucci........The mind boggles.

Betts has played 2 maybe 3 TAC games at most. At 170cms is he going to get drafted? Big Maybe IMHO.

Garrubba had an excellent trial game but has struggled to standout for CG or Dandenong on a consistant level. Everyone rates him but I still can't see why. He runs quick. Big deal. I saw him today against MGS and he couldn't get a kick in a stampede. XL destroyed him.

So what is the U18 championships all about? Putting kids in who may get drafted so recruiters can see them perform against decent opposition or trying to win bragging rights over the other states.

And another thing while I'm on my soap box. The 6 or 7 recruiters I have spoken to are still shaking their heads that Sam Gooley wasn't even in the Vic Metro Initial Squad of 50.

I feel better now. ;)

Nayna - Flashy wingman who has ordinary disposal. DC: Doubtful.

Are you sure about that 1???? and i would have thought more of a attacking Half back who can go onto the wing.
Each to there own, but from what i know the kid plays his best footy from HBF where he can run off and set attacks up rather than getting a HB recieve and attacking.
Agree with the almost everything else said, maybe a bit harsh on Calders Dale May who is a certain pick up.

cheers

In GH's defence, I think you are splitting hairs re the wing or hbf.

The fact is Nayna can't kick for nuts and it's hard to set up play if you can't hit a target, particularly if you are playing off hbf.

Next time you watch him play, jot down how many times his kicks hit a team-mate or go to his team advantage.

Yeah, May is probably close to a certainity - I was surprised when I went through the final lists today just how few players I can jot down straight away as "certain" draft picks. Bit of a concern really.

I wasn't too taken with Gooley in the trial match, though Davidson had his measure, but I haven't seen him play APS footy.

Would Leslie have gotten much of a run though? He only really plays in the centre, and McQualter, Deledio, Rosa, Polo and Sheringham would all be in front of him. Never know - injuries might mean he gets a chance.

I like Nayna - he goes hard, is extremely athletic and quick, but his kicking means it would be a massive gamble to take him. It could be worked on, but it would take 2-3 years.

Garrubba will be alright. ;)

wat bout knights i think he is stiff not to get a game. he a got a bit of it in the trial game and every1 knows he can pkay. sorely he would be better than nayna running off the hbf

You really have to wonder where the selectors heads are. Chris Knights is an example. Played last year for them & wasnt shoddy then. Hasnt had his best year so far this year but neither has Herrington & he got picked. Heard they were looking for players with leadership qualities too. Who are the ones theyve picked?

Definately bragging rights. The TAC might be a development comp but the championships are about winning.

For mine the big suprise is Herrington, particularly with Little in the squad as well.

Betts and Murphy are there for pace. There aren't too many speedsters in the squad and I guess the selectors sent out a call for someone with genuine speed and Murphy's name came up. Probably also in response to the feeling that the Metro forwards might struggle to kick a winning score and be over-reliant on goals from midfield.

I suppose some of the selections were head to head choices. Knights, Garruba and Prismill might have been after 2 positions for example.

Just on Sowersby and Quinton getting selected - it's probably not a major surprise when you consider the other tall defenders in the squad. Unless Barling or Willits goes back they have no one.

Sowersby plays almost exclusively as a wingman, and a fairly wide one at that. I have seen him play occasionally as a CHB but he is very poor in that role. Quinton played some FB in the last trial allthough he doesn't really look suited to the role.

If the last trial is anything to go by it would appear that Murphy, Cloke, Dowler, Barling and Jnr Smith will be the key defensive options. Cloke or Dowler would go forward with Willits and one of Herrington or Little. They might also rest Deluca forward.

Certainly looks very thin for key position talent.

Chris Gooley has been playing FB and CHB for MGS and FF for Sandringham in his TAC games. I still don't get it. It will be interesting to hear the thoughts of some recruiters tomorrow.

Will the national champs be shown on Fox Footy like it has been the last couple of years or will there be no coverage

Ill make sure im there Sezzac :D

Nayna cant kick, its amazing to see a kid at that level unable to kick at least to a satisfactory level.
I really cant see him making it to AFL level. The sad bit is he has everything else going for him.

The Gooley brothers have only played about four TAC cup games each. They both go missing in action when the going gets tough. They may be good at school footy, which is no where near the standard of the TAC cup.

Utter rubbish Wigboy.

I guess we will have to wait until draft day and to see how many Vic Metro players get drafted and how many Gooley's get drafted.

They have played 3 games and apparently did okay against 2 of the 3 teams that are travelling okay in the TAC. Read the details for yourself.

I dont know which Gooley's you have been watching, but in my opinion they both are excellent players. I don't see how Sam Gooley didnt make the initial metro squad and think Chris is a much better player than many of the players selected in the final metro squad.

Chris Knights not in this team is a disgrace - He's already hit back and made Gippsland pay on Sunday with another best on ground performance.
