Hopefully Collingwood feature in the first AFL game at Victoria Park just as the Lions played the last game at Victoria Park.

Lions returning home to Victoria Park for the first time since the mid 80s as well.

Its Aboriginal name Barrambin apparently means windy place so Essendon should feel pretty welcome too.

I think if the AFL was serious about winning over QLD and NSW they would host double header ANZAC Day games between Essendon and Collingwood at Brisbane Stadium and Sydney Olympic park with swans and lions playing after at each stadium. Sadly, AFL lacks the balls or vision to tell the MCC to share events over a 3 year cycle. Jewel in the home and away season is ANZAC Day.
May as well move it around on the eastern seaboard to maximise interest and tv ratings. If I was QLD and NSW governments I’d be building a case to host ANZAC Day games.

Maybe Collingwood might feel more comfortable relocating all their games to the Victoria park

Clearly a ploy to lose an election.

If so, it seemed to have the desired effect…

I think the idea was that Labor knew they were going to lose in 2024 anyway, and didn't want the political baggage of having picked Victoria Park or the Gabba if there was a cost blowout in future, so they forced the LNP to get their hands dirty instead.

That's a double edged sword though. Yes, if there are big blowouts or the facility sucks at the end, it'll be cast as the LNPs failure. But if there aren't big blowouts and it is a success, it'll improve the LNPs image with regard to building infrastructure. Campbell Newman was a massive gift for Labor in the long term because of how much he wrecked the place, but this has the potential to wipe out a lot of those memories.

It won’t be known as ‘Victoria Park’ though, it’s just the suburb it’s located in. In the same way no one calls the MCG ‘Jolimont’.

‘Brisbane Stadium’ it will be (government says it won’t sell the naming rights).

But nonetheless, it’s still a good idea for Collingwood to be permanently banished there.
