State Victoria - The Mighty Bushrangers

They should call the Victorian team in this tournament the ' World XI' or something like that.

They are throwing the 'Victoria' name loosely . Heck, they could have had a name a team competition and no one would have raised an eyebrow. eg call them Beijing Buckets, Cairo Caterpillars, Fremantle Frogs. Or if you wanted to go down the state route, Texas Tigers, Florida Fryers.

I mean there are teams in the ILT20 and Abu Dhabi T10 named after random places around the world (like Morrisville North Carolina lol) that have nothing to do with those places. So yeah, wouldn’t be the first time haha

Im just thinking of the mighty fine Victorian players that have represented the state in their history.eg Warne, Hodge, Elliott, Merv Hughes, Neil Harvey, Keith Stackpole, Max Walker, Dean Jones, Tony Dodemaide, Paul Reiffel, Darren Berry etc. Imagine if this Victoria team go on and with this Global Super League T20 and they have a reunion of some sort with all the trophy winners in Vic history. Could you imagine a world where Corey Anderson and those historical names are in the same room? It makes it sound like a joke.

Getting a Vic cap in any form should be treasured, it should have significance meaning. This tournament devalues the Vic brand. I hate to say that but there are better ways of putting up a team brand. Even call then Victoria A XI- as a Victoria 2nd XI, wouldnt hurt the brand as much.

Victoria being proudly represented on the world stage. Its as Victorian as a team you could get ;)

Blake MacDonald- Born In Canberra
Joe Clarke- England
Krishnamurthi- USA
Wells- Born in Tasmania
Anderson- Kiwi/American dual citizen
Scott Edwards- represents Netherlands national team
Karima Gore- USA
Dominic Drakes- West Indies
Callum Stow- Australian
Jackson Smith- ???? not sure
Birthisel-??? not sure

Im assuming the last 3 are Australians.
I definitely would've liked to see an iconic player like Dan Christian, Siddle or even Finch play this, but six of the above are at least based in Victoria playing cricket here. Others are from our affiliate team San Francisco Unicorns and rest are ring ins (Drakes, Anderson, Clarke).

That was my initial concern too. And of course it's a ridiculous team to send, but somehow i've found myself embracing them lol. As i mentioned in another thread it's such an unlikely mob of grizzlied has-beens and young nobodies, it's a script straight outta Major League

With the rain in Canberra poor Boland must be losing his mind. Barely played a game in the last 3 years! Surely he replaces Hazlewood in Adelaide now.

In decades into the future, we are possibly going to compare this Victoria 'state side' to the early days of the state-based franchise league. Victoria state team was the dominant team winning 4 of the first 5 state based KFC T20 competitions. They were that good a side that they were the representative in the Champions League tournament (remember them participating in it). They made the semi finals of a Champions League in one of those seasons. Victoria in that comp beat the mighty IPL side, the Bangalore Royal Challengers. On the backbone of Victorian talent: Quiney, Hodge, Blizzard, White, McDonald, McKay, Siddle in their own backyard, which when you think of now, is even more incredible.

And that team the core were Victorian players. You cant put Dominic Drakes and Cam White in the same conversation in terms of how much toil they have put into Victorian cricket.

main difference is there was no clash with our regular season, so it's unfortunate timing we're playing a shield match next week

I have no idea how we won that, or why we're playing a t20 tournament in Guyana, when we haven't played T20 since 2011, but I am all in on this 'sticky tape' team, even the logos are taped on!

Although Clarke is a Stars player so affiliated as well.

The ridiculous part of the Champions League was IPL players had to play for their franchise instead of their home side…

But the only game I remember was I think Hastings or McKay hitting a 6 to win off the last ball?

One of the teams Victoria beat, had Kohli, Rahul Dravid, Dale Steyn to name a few players in their team probably in their peak of their powers.

Sadly, I dont think any BBL side could compete with any IPL side these days. And we also to remember in the Champions League of T20 cricket those days, IPL had first dibs on a player if they played as an 'overlap' player for 2 franchises or more.

Id like to see the Champions League in T20 cricket come back one day. But on the onus that 1 team per competition , not giving 3 spots to IPL teams which kind of defeats the purpose of finding the best T20 franchise around the world.

Go something like: 1 x IPL, 1 x Big Bash, 1 x CPL, 1 x Hundred or Vitality Blast , 1 xPSL, 1 x MLC, 1 x Super Smash, 1 x ILT20. 8 teams to determine the true champion of T20 cricket. And if you wanted to further consider other T20 leagues, maybe have some sort of qualification..........

it means money, it was never about finding the best side.

Bit of food for thought, im a bit of a neutral on this one as Im Sydney based.

But who would win a T20 battle between the most successful BBL Franchise v most successful state based T20 Franchise?

Perth Scorchers v Victoria state team.

Perth have won 5 of 13 titles in their era. But they had that golden run winning BBL 3, BBL 4 and BBL 6. And made the grand Final in 5 of the first 6 seasons.

Victoria made 5 of 6 grand Finals under the state based comp and won 4 titles.

Id probably say it would be 50:50.

If they want to do that, Id be OK with say an IPL side having a host. I do understand TV eyes and money are important. Id presume the only place worth hosting a tournament like that, would be India. (or even UAE?) There was talk a year or couple of years ago, bringing it back again.

2 x IPL and 6 other participants from the top leagues. But dont go back to 3 IPL sides as it did become a bit predictable and from memory we got some very one-sided games in the last season of it.

hard to say, since a lot has changed tactically and rules wise since the Vics were winning their comps. it's a bit apples and oranges.

2 groups of however many teams, with 1 IPL team in each group?

Anderson is captain of the San Francisco Unicorns.
