FOOTSCRAY police are calling for the public to be vigilant and keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour after a recent rise in daytime burglaries. Leading Sen-Constable Helen McCormack said up to six burglaries were being reported in a day.

“We’ve had up to eight reported on some days,” she said.

Sen-Constable McCormack said there had been a spike across the west, particularly in Maribyrnong, Hobsons Bay and Wyndham.

In Maribyrnong, the hardest hit suburbs were Yarraville, Seddon, Kingsville and Footscray.

“There has been a concerning increase and we need residents to help us by reporting suspicious behaviour.”

She advised people to take their valuables out of their cars as theft from cars has also increased.

My uncle lives in Footscray. In about the past year he's had his car stolen when it was parked in his driveway (they found it later) and his house burgled twice.

A man is clinging to life after a shooting in a notorious shopping mall in Footscray.

The 24-year-old clashed with two other men before being shot in the hip.

Police were taken to the man lying in a pool of blood in the middle of the Nicholson St Mall at 9pm last night.

A friend of the man flagged down officers on the corner of Droop and Barkly Street.

Three shots were fired. One hit the victim, believed to be of African origin, severing a major artery in his hip.

The gunman remains at large. He is said to be of Caucasian appearance.

Detective Sergeant Campbell McNair told 7News: "They're not sure why it's happened - there's been a dispute and a male's been shot."

The victim suffered major blood loss and was unconscious before being rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.

Berwick tradesman David West, who works in Footscray, said he was shocked by the violent culture.

"It is definitely not a safe place to be, it's really quite shocking," he said.

"In the time I’ve worked here I’ve seen countless fights, drug deals and people drinking on the street."

"The area here is just wrong, there needs to be more police out here. There’s drug deals going on in broad daylight and children are being exposed to it all."

Mr West said he witnessed a fight between three men earlier in the day.

"I don’t know what it was about but two guys were really bashing another man," he said.

According to reports, a white dude shot a black dude. They'd never met before but they got into an argument and whitey shot blacky in the guts.

I like Footscray mall, always interesting characters around. Gets a bit spooky after dark though. I usually wear a full set of armour and carry a lance when I go there after closing time.

For those who don't know, things are getting worse in Melbourne's west. Particularly in Footscray, from shootings to violence.

Alcohol is a big contributor - in this News report, one man has vowed to stop selling alcohol completely from his Footscray store, to help curb the violence and crime in the streets and to hopefully provide a spark for other retailers in the western suburbs to do the same. It will affectively cut 10% from his overall yearly profits as he makes $80,000 a year from alcohol alone.

But will it work?

Sometimes I wonder why it's so hard to roll out a system in alcohol buying, create a system where a person has to be evaluated for alcohol abuse or dependence, and their criminal/violent history involving alcohol. Then, make every retailer ask for a person's name and I.D before selling the alcohol, so that they can be screened on the database. How hard is this? - it will prevent people who cannot drink responsibly from continuing to abuse their life and others around them, from buying alcohol - most of which is cheap and refrigerated everywhere you go.

I'm not completely against alcohol, but something needs to be done. I am of the belief that alcohol is worse than even marijuana, yet it's so freely available. I know of people, including migrants, who opt to buy alcohol SIMPLY because it's so damn available. There are stores selling alcohol everywhere with advertising EVERYWHERE. They want to stop, but can't. It's such an unbalanced system.

I, myself, have suffered a bit in the area I live in because of certain people (with irresponsibility when it comes to alcohol) getting drunk, as they go from manageable to completely violent for no reason at all. It's a big downer when said people get so drunk that they do not care for their own safety during a fight, whilst those they approach are of a completely different mindset. And it's even more of a downer when said people are not treated harshly by the police or the court system.

If GUNS aren't allowed in Australia because one person may abuse it and go on a killing spree - whilst the majority may not, then for Christ sake, bring in Alcohol control. Bring in something that stems the availability to people that clearly have a problem and prevent those on welfare from buying alcohol. Yes, some people will go around the system, just as they do with guns in Australia, but like gun availability, it will make it much harder for even the hardest criminals with a problem record to obtain. Something needs to be done because it is no doubt that alcohol is not something that should be as, or even more available as cigarettes are.

Like Sydney's King Cross and Melbourne's King Street, increasing alcohol problems in Melbourne's western suburbs, like Footscray, are being blamed on too much liquor.

@ 1:11 you will see the kind of approach you get in the suburbs...

The biggest problem in all this is knife crime i live in werribee and i cant begin to tell you the amount of times i have heard of or seen a fight and someone is getting their arse handed to them so their mates jump in and nearly kill the other bloke or just stab the bloke and take off.

Anyone who uses a knife as a weapon( with the exception of self defense ie home invasions or rape etc...) is a guttless far king cant they cant handle losing so they use knives.

And anyone who lives in werribee or surrounding areas can tell you that there are certain places you dont go at night and the main culprits in werribee are the asian gangs who are made up of kids who are born in the area and think that because their parents were hard done by it gives them an excuse to be in gangs and carry knives and act like hard cants but when they are one on one they show their true colours that they are all weak as piss maggotts.

I can forgive the sudanese immigrants to an extent i mean in sudan they have had to kill and steal just to survive and coming from that to the great land of australia is a major shake up for them but like all people/races their are bad apples but on the wholenearly every sudanese person i have encountered have been nothing but kind and respectfull.

We have our fair share of bogans too but on the whole they are not that bad.

I have a bloke that lives in my court and he thought he was a wife beater and he thought he was the toughest bloke on the planet and one night his neighbour who was a kiwi was having a party and he didnt like the noise so he decided to tell him to turn the music down or he would smash his coconut head in ( his words not mine) when he said no he punched him in the face.

Now little did he know all his relos were there now i hate fights where its 2,3,4,5 or 6+ on one but after he ounched hom all his relos belted the living hell out of him the cops came and arrested the bloke who hit the kiwi and a fair few of the neighbours came out of their house and laughed as he was taken away in the divvy van.

Does anybidy else live in werribee or surrounding areas and if so have you had any of the same problems ?

Footscray/Sunshine/Braybrook for example has improved greatly during the course of the last decade. Yes, drug deals and fights occur in Sunshine and Footscray but nowhere near the magnitude of the early middle 2000s. If anything, Footscray has definitely gone safer than before, but since Africans have a bad rep, people automatically assume it’s a bad area.

I would say the Suburbs are more violent, especially in those growing areas. Some of the new housing estates barely have any police presence and robbing and bashing are common occurrence especially when a house party occurs since houses are right next to each other. Day break in happen regularly since no one knows each other and homes are easy targets. A lot of the youth have nothing to do except drink at the park and cause trouble for the sake of it.

I think the gang problem however is overstated, I don’t think there is a set group of organized or well defined gangs operating anywhere in the West. Yea, you hear stupid names like King Park, SKS and so on but nothing more than delusional young boys treating to act hard. I don’t think the ones I named even exist anymore.

Knives are big problem especially in St Albans and Sunshine, where carrying a knife is seen as a norm and a sort of protection. When you ever see group of young kids carrying country roads bag best to assume that have a knife or machete in those bags and I am speaking from personal experience.

I don’t want to name ethnic groups and sound racist but seriously Sudos and Islanders just cannot handle a drink, best to stay away when they get drunk, automatically become aggressive and unreasonable, but good lads not when drunk. I cannot agree with the above poster giving reasons for why Sudanese cause trouble at times. They came from a war torn country, they are given abundant of opportunities from work, school, social life and even reasonable welfare. Why would they cause trouble for? You escape violence not to reproduce it somewhere else, community leaders really need to address the issue here, it isn’t helping them in the long run.

I haven’t even touched on Alcohol and gambling because nothing will ever been done, revenue stream is too great

I've lived in the area for almost 30 years, and have not had exposure to what you describe. However, I don't go out at night and work during the day, so I daresay I'm not exposed to a lot of it.

There's certainly a lot of petty crime in the area. I used to park my car out on the road, and it was ridiculous how often it got damaged. I've also had stuff taken from a car in my driveway on several occasions. The train line is not too comfortable during the day either.

The ethnic mix of the area has certainly changed, and statistics show that has an effect on crime rates. However, most of my concerns have been about white bogans, of which there are no shortage.

I know people will cry racist but this problem never existed before we started letting in sudanese people by the thousands....

Has nothing to do with them being Sudanese. There's multiple immigrant groups within Melbourne with significantly higher crime rates than the average. But that's not because their Sudanese, Vietnamese or whatever. It's because they're immigrants full stop (with their associated issues such as cultural and language barriers etc.).

There isn't some phenomenon which makes certain races more likely to commit a crime. It's firmly based on socio-economic circumstances. A lot of Sudanese immigrants for example have religious, cultural and language barriers making it hard for them to assimilate. Add to that the fact that many families have been traumatised due to war and poverty. Doesn't exactly create the best base for a fruitful adult life now does it?

You and I would be exactly the same if the shoe was on the other foot.

So yes, If you genuinely think that it's the Sudanese then people are entitled to "cry racist".

I have lived in Tarneit/ Hoppers Crossing area for just over 25 years and haven't experienced any of the stuff that gets reported. Young groups hang around at the Werribee Plaza cinema's - wow!!! Weren't we all looking for social interaction and things to do when we were their age?!? Yes, there are small area's within the suburbs that have bad rep's or experience break-ins, hold-ups, drugs etc. Nothing that I've experienced and it's not as if I've hidden myself behind closed doors the last 25 years. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, just that I believe it's badly misrepresented/ reported.

Just to put it into persepective, I've had my car broken into once in 15 years and once in 5 years of visiting my then gf (now wife) when she was living in East Bentleigh. I stayed at her place maybe 50 times over a period of 5 years.

In the end, you put yourself into certain situations or positions (late at night, alone in known looking for trouble) you're sure to find trouble.

Over the last say 3-5 years whydhamvale has had a steady influx of afirican, sudanese etc... imigrants to the area now i have no problem with them at all 99 percent of them are good hard working people who wouldnt hurt a fly i mean just look at majak daw and his family they have intergrated into society seemlessly.

now that begs the question why cant all imigrants intergrate into society almost seemlessly i mean for the most part they are all in the same boat just with different experiences so as a general principle they should all be able to intergrate without problem.

it is my belief that there are a few who dont want to intergrate and this is where we get minority groups who give the whole ethinc, religious etc... a bad name.

i have lived in werribee for over 18 years and i have seen lots of acts of violence and random violence but luckily have never had anything happen to myself or a close family member.

as i said before anyone who decides to defend themselves with a kives before fists is a low down weak cant and a dog.

i mean if i had a problem with someone i would happily punch on with them and if i get my ass handed to me so be it our beef ends there but you cant do that these days because even though i think that way the other person may not and if i smash them and i think thats it but they are angry because they got beat or their ego got hurt and next thing you know you have 10 blokes jumping you or you have a knife in your back.

but this is just the culture i mean look at this video it says it all why we have such a problem not only in this area but this state ( victoria ) and country

The top comment on this vide sums it up perfectly:

"if your such hard cants why do you cover your face? step to sydney crews then you will see what its like to actually cop a beating, little bitch cants your all pussy ******s and i garantee none of yous would be able to fight one on one you filthy dogs".

I changed some words obvioulsy but if any other words are in there that are unnacceptable or offensive the mods have the power to change that.
