You don't understand Watson's role at EFC.

Watson is a clearance King - That is he is good at winning the ball from stop plays - IN OTHER WORDS:CLEARANCES.

Lonergan is better at winning the ball from contested situations - which may involve him didving into packs to win the ball.

Sorry. My comments were probably poorly expressed. I realise they play different roles, and have different strengths and weaknesses. My basic points were that our midfield atm is not up to the mark if Watson isn't there and that he makes an enormous difference in there in winning the ball and getting it going our way, and I'd be surprised if you disagree?

Yet we had more contested possessions and nearly twice as many clearances.

With respect, you seem overly focused on the stats. If we just looked at the stats, then we'd probably also be inclined to think Alwyn Davey had an absolute shocker given the stats show him as producing 4 clangers and only 9 possessions. Which is just one of many examples of how utterly misleading they often are.

Lonergan was beaten for and to the ball a number of times, simple as that. He can and will play far better in other games this season than he did on Friday night.

But hey, maybe people giving him votes is at least a sign in itself of just how horribly mediocre our game was and how few of our players actually beat their opponents.

Not overly focused on stats, just when you say we lost the hard ball, that's something you can blatantly show with stats. We won the hard ball all night, we lost the game by turning the ball over in dangerous places.

To be honest, the loss of Watson was not as pronounced as expected. Although that was undoubtedly helped by the utter shiteness of Bryan and Wood, we managed to get a fair bit of the ball all night. The problem was the loss of guys like Lovett and McVeigh who can hit a target with ease, and Reimers, who can scare Daisy into submission. Guys like Dyson and Lonergan will also be more effective when they aren't the main midfielders (alongside Stanton) in the side, as they are afforded more freedom. Having said that both were outstanding.

The half-back flank is a worry position for me. Guys like Dempsey and Houli don't seem to have enough defensive awareness. Dempsey leaving Daisy standing all by himself about 25 metres out from goal was simply unforgiveable. Nash doesn't seem to provide enough rebound, Lovett-Murray doesn't seem to have the discipline to curtail his run and return to his man, and Winders and Lovett are better served further up the ground and into the middle.

Personally, I'd like to see Reimers given a chance there, as he provides good defensive cover (think his tackle on Crowley at Subi last year), and good attacking flair. He also has pretty nice skills, and seems to be working on his engine (I remember reading in the Bomber Mag that he trains with Stanton when it comes to fitness - hardly the worst role model in that regard).
