Review vs Bulldogs (5th best comeback by margin for any club, and equal best for StK)

Was watching again today myself. Pay special attention to Sinkers tackling. For a small bloke who still looks like he goes to primary school he is an absolute relentless and vicious animal when he tackles. Faresinkum oppo players will know when they've been Sinkered and afl may need to bring in a toilet bin right next to the blood bin. Some will need both.
I think it was Johnno Brown who said he was sure Jack Sinclair played Auskick at half time!

Cmon guys, im seeing likes but not any links:p
Would love to hear it too, but I don't think they podcast it. Maybe a nice little tweet their way might do the trick?

They're an immature side, who if not after leading by 55 points, absolutely should have won when they kicked the first two of the final quarter. But apparently listening to the radio yesterday, no one can provide any suggestion as to who was playing on Jack Billings.

As of right now they are getting off easy. But they wouldn't want to lose a big lead anytime soon or it may ruin them as a group. St Kilda were 7-3 and in good shape for a couple of finals in 1999 when they lost a 66 point lead against Hawthorn, then a considerable lead the next week against eventual woodens spoon winners Collingwood. You eventually start thinking that no lead is safe and play accordingly. We lost a host of big leads over the next two years after that until the group was significantly turned over.

Going back to that Hawthorn game in 1999, a number of promising younger players played in that game. Here's the list of the under 26 year olds who played in that game for St Kilda:

Peter Everitt (played his best football in 1998, played a significant role in losing this game), Daniel Healy (played 2 more games for the club), Jason Triainidis (never kicked on), Darryl Wakelin (delisted bewilderingly by Blight), Tony Brown (finished within 18 months after being a very good player ever since arriving), Tim Elliot (didn't kick on), Barry Hall (left to play his best footy), Max Hudghton (went OK), Austinn Jones (see Max), Brett Knowles (never kicked on), Joe McLaren (traded in 2000), Matthew Carr (left to play his best footy), Ben Walton (best 1st year player in 1999, finished by 2001).

As I said, they wouldn't want to lose a significant lead in a game for a while, because that sh*t will eat at you.

How about this for a long term effect. In 2008 we went up to the Gold Coast and beat Norf. At one stage we were down by around 3 goals (maybe 4, but I think it was closer to 3). It was the biggest comeback by a St Kilda team for a decade. It gave us a lot of belief that we could turn around tricky situations but seriously. 3 goals (or 4). We carried the scar of 1999 for a long time, even if our personnel had almost all changed by then - these can become legacy issues.

I think we were very fragile in 2004 and 2005, even though we were just about the best team in it. Certainly food for thought for the dogs.

Just finished watching the replay. Very special win.

These kids are just great and will go far.

Having Riewoldt on the wing using his legs to crush the spirit out of the dogs was just great.

They were out on their feet after the half time break because they did too much flooding and worked hard to get behind the ball. That was our old gameplan, the stupid Ross Lyon gameplan that doesn't work. Sure it looks good for a while when the zone is strong but what about when it breaks down and you have to actually score to win? Nope stuck in your back 50m without the legs to get down to goal.

As long as the Saints work hard in front of the football and have a desire to impact the scoreboard I'm happy.

Loved that Richo changed things up. Roo to wing, stop tagging, swap the defenders around to let Fisher play Dempsters usual role.

Loved that the boys came at HT to support Roo - no idea what Stringer was all about, no real reason for him to do that. Mav Weller was first on scene, think he snuck a punch in there too, he is not to be messed with. That definitely got the guys going.

Jack Billings was brilliant, although he did miss a couple of kickable ones including when he had a man in the goalsquare to handball to. Jack Lonie cost us a much lesser value draft pick, but frankly those two lads look about cut from the same cloth - get Lonie a couple preseasons in him and he could be playing a bit of MF too.

Jack Steven has brilliant run in him. I still think we are paying more for his run than his skill and wonder if that is $ value, but if we can get another skillful MF Steven's disposal efficiency will matter less.

Roberton has looked like a different player over 3 seasons; 2013 he was a lanky looking half-back, never seemed rushed but would wander the ball out off HB bouncing it as he sauntered. Occasionally had to play 3rd tall, and would just stay on his man and try and fist all day. 2014 he looked out of sorts, we know why but was meh, a slow defender who didn't seem to want the ball. 2015 he is all-energy, flies into tackles, sprints into space. He doesn't seem to meander with ball in the way he did in 2013, plays a lot faster now. And does it well.

Schneiders efficiency was incredible, although this year I have noticed why some people dislike him. I was always a fan and was glad to see him still on the list this year but do notice now, he doesn't play with the same intensity as the likes of Weller/Armo/Roberton. He watches at times, maybe a certain amount of self-preservation. But when he's good he's really good.

Everyone stepped up in 2nd half, even the peripheral players; e.g. Webster in first half was inaccurate and was losing his man in the 50, but in the 2nd half was tight on his man and kicked good, dangerous kicks towards the Dogs 50.

Thanks for sharing this one Strahany!
This was actually THE best moment of the game for me. I was watching it live on my computer (Yay!!! I can watch live games from abroad now that I am an international member!), excited by the comeback, "drooling" at Billings' goals... and then the game is over and I see Richo's face of true happiness in the sideline seeing the boys celebrate. This moment spoke tons from our coach and I believe it will probably be one of the best moments of his coaching career and he will remember it for ever. I think he was actually trying to soak in the moment, enjoying it deeply. And hence, this smile that seemed no one could erase from his face.
I have been trying to get the video from the moment again, but in the replays from the AFL website they only show the game and not the post-game. So thank you! If anyone can put the video of this moment in youtube it would be great!

You can find it in this replay

I agree the AFL really need to include all the pre-game/post-game and halftime stuff as well.

Just on Geary (MS, SS, you'll like this :) ). I watched the replay, and it seemed Gears was primarily on Dahlhaus. Dahlhaus is averaging in the mid-high 20s for possessions, coming off 27 against the Swans; he's had 5 marks three times so far this year. Against Adelaide, only a few weeks ago, he had stats of 27 possies, 5 marks, 1g2b, 6 tackles, 3 goal assists, 7 inside 50s.

Before Saturday, he had scored above 100 Fantasy points every game this year.

Against us, he was WAY, WAY down on a lot of his averages so far this year: 18 possies, 3 marks, 1 goal 0 behinds, 0 goal assists, 2 inside 50s.

And his Fantasy points? 64. Nearly half his usual output.

Gears smothered him, choked him.

I know ;)

Goal he kicked wasn't on Gears either.

To be fair, as much as Gears did a great job on him, I was watching Dahlhaus pretty closely, because I was most worried about his speed when we turned it over. He ran to the right spots in that first half but could barely present later on - he was that knackered in the 2nd half.
