Wayde Skipper or Simon Taylor

I can't believe I'm saying it, but, yeah, I think we need Simon Taylor.

Apart from the occasional exception, I've never been that big on the influence of most ruckmen, tap-wise. I thought if we could provide a contest and a tap our way now and again, we'd be right, but, with all the good work Renouf and Skipper have done, we routinely lose the hitouts and usually by a substantial margin; strikes me it might be the difference, when we've got so much else covered.

Taylor can ruck and he's got some mongrel; if he knows his limitations and eliminates the tendency to give away too many frees, the job's his.

Wow, I can't belive im reading some of the dribble, some people are posting. Skipper has been great for us. Last night was not his fault as he was with gardiner, he has been outstanding for us. He is able to take good marks, has clean kicks, I think skipper has earned his spot along with renouf, and also dont forget he has only played 10 games with us now, and is starting to find his way, I reckon once he gets used to everything and knows what everyones strengths and weakness's are, he can do some real damage.

Skipper has been good around the ground, but he's playing ruck, the rucks job is to give our mids first use of the ball, unfortunatley he's just not big enough to do the job.

Yep, spot on. Our mids have to work so hard for clearences vs the other team given we are getting smashed in the hitouts. I know people will roll out the "just shark the opposition taps" but when you are playing against midfields of the ilk of geelong and st kilda and ruckman of the likes of ottens and gardiner you cant expect this to work on consistent basis.

If taylor stops 4-5 (or 10) clean clearences a game to the opposition that are happening because skipper is getting smashed in the ruck and takes a few big pack marks a game (skipper has limited impact in a marking contest for a supposed ruckman) and does nothing else then we are a 4-5 goal better side.

We have the explosive mids in hodge, burgoyne and rioli that if taylor taps a centre square bounce down their throat then it will almost likely end up in a goal to us.

it's funny how last week skipper was a god, yet this week taylor must come in.

like i have already said IMO skip is a better player around the ground, and Taylor is the better ruckman, the real question is what do we need someone who will give our players first use of the ball in the middle, or someone who will make a contest around the ground.

if Taylor played well for Box hill i reckon we bring him in for this week, and see which ruck combo works best.

as far as i'm concerned Renouf is our number one everybody else is fighting for that number two spot.

Yep it changes week by week.

While Taylor has been winning hit-outs in the VFL, he has not been on the best players. So we would be trading a player who is in good form in the AFL and has had couple of bad game in the ruck, with a player in the VFL who is not in the best but gets more hitouts.

By the way the only hit-outs that matter are hit-outs to advantage and Skipper has been doing very well in this if you watch the games.

If Skipper starts to drop form in the next two weeks and Taylor shows improvement, only then would the coaching staff would consider it.

Yup thats is right, i just cant beleive some posters, after a draw or a 2 point loss we have to drop players who played 1 bad game, the reason why we have been on this good winning form is because of these players...

Asked Brent Renouf (had him at Auskick Saturday mornig) if he looked forward to Taylor coming back so he could have a rest for a week or two and he said "Yeah, that would be nice but I don`t want to incase I lose my spot" I said he didn`t need to worry about his spot, but he just smiled.
Skipper is a great 2nd ruck and is great around the ground so Taylor is the one who needs to earn a spot in the team which will be very hard to do atm.

Simon Taylor or Wayde Skipper

If we were to finish in the top eight, who is your choice for our 2nd back up ruckmen? IMO id take Simon Taylor he is more physical then Skipper, and is a much better tap ruckmen, but Skipper is better around the ground and can play in defence up forward and ruck of course, thoughts? :)

There's a report in the Box Hill Forum that says Tails isn't even jumping in the ruck yet. Based on that, we'd be talking a few more weeks before he even came into consideration surely?

Re: Simon Taylor or Wayde Skipper

A poll would be a good idea. In the other thread, it looked like Tails was the popular choice early but with Skippers improvment I think most prefer him now.

Is there a chance to run with the three of them to get Taylor some game time ?

Sharing the ruck but one of renouf/skipper the third tall forward ?

In terms of depth Taylor need a bit of time - maybe at the SCG where runners not needed so much (mind you you dont need a third tall fwd either)

How come no Skipper in defence yesterday when we were getting smashed in the last quarter?
It would seem that that's a large part of his advantage over Taylor, in fact without it Taylor has him covered easily IMO.

Tails was pretty good today. He looked very fit and even managed to run down a guy and make a tackle. The trademark leap before the ball is bounced was on show today so he is well and truly good to go.
