I test drove a Rav 4, an MG HS and a Subraru Forester over the past few weeks, took all for a full day (also tested the Mazda, didn't like it so took it back after an hour) (yes I am a middle aged man :)).

The MG was a fantastic car and beat the Rav 4 hands down (though the hybrid engine for the RAV made it a lot, lot closer).

However, I ended up going with the Subaru, the MG had ALL the bells and whistles, but surprisingly too many for my liking. I preferred the clunkiness of the Subaru.

Short story, try out the HS if you are looking in this sector, it's a bloody decent car (and 10 grand cheaper than the Sub).

Thanks for the review, I'm seriously considering the HS Essence at the moment, always good to hear another perspective. :thumbsu:

If you decide to go with the MG, let the club know before you buy. They might have an extra discount on offer or they have a way of connecting the sale to a member and that way the club definitely gets its commission which is part of the whole sponsorship deal with MG.

I made a big deal about being in there because I was a Port fan :).

Before I started chatting to Andrew Hunter about SAIC, my mate who is a car guy, thru work got a SAIC Magus T60 dual cab ute marketed in Oz and NZ as the LDV T60. He raved about their value for $$$ and said the price point plus the 7 year warranty meant the resale value becomes less important, especially if you were more likely to turnover a work car closer to 7 years rather than 4 years.

I assume SAIC's MG models have a similar equation.
Very similar, although what LDV have going for them is that it's a heavy fleet arm on the brand what creates higher turnover and return business. The percentage of repeat customers in fleet is higher than retail, this is even when the customer is said to be happy with the first purchase.

Would love the club to leverage this into a SAIC deal with a couple of their other brands becoming lower sponsors

Interesting you say that as the new ZST they have simplified the bells and whistles into a10.1 inch monitor
Big fan of Subaru as a brand drive an outback myself

Most car manufacturers are now offering 5-7 year warranty.

So the advantage companies like MG, Hyundai and Kia had when they first started offering this isn't as enticing.

Did just that, the club have provided me with a code linked to my membership so if I do end up getting it, the sale will be tied back to the club. :thumbsu:

If they're doing a SUV based off the LDV90 to me that's a huge Green light.
Says that it's only a matter of time until they release a Ute based off the TD60.

MG continues to outshine others in a depressed Oz car market

August figures Aug 2020 on Aug 2019 MG +69.0% - most companies - 20% to - 35%

A petrol-electric hybrid vehicle has topped the monthly sales charts for the first time in Australian automotive history – as Victoria’s strict lockdown restrictions kept the market in reverse during the coronavirus crisis. The Toyota RAV4 SUV was the nation’s top-selling vehicle for the second month in a row, but the hybrid version alone accounted for the overwhelming majority of sales – and was enough to lead the entire market in its own right. Official sales figures released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) show the Toyota RAV4 was the top-selling vehicle with 4825 examples reported as sold. Of those, 4405 were hybrids and the remaining 420 were petrol-only models.
.....
The market
New-car sales in August 2020 were down by 28.8 per cent compared to the same month last year, with 60,986 vehicles reported as sold. It was the 29th month in a row of year-on-year decline.

Year-to-date
, 575,906 new vehicles have been reported as sold, a decrease of 20.4 per cent compared to the first eight months of last year.

While sales for August 2020 were down, many dealers ran out of stock following temporary factory shutdowns during the coronavirus crisis, and stronger than expected demand in June and July. This decrease of 28.8 per cent in August 2020 compares to a 12.8 per cent decline in July 2020, a 6.4 per cent decline in June 2020, a 35.3 per cent decline in May 2020, and a 48.5 per cent decline in April 2020, in the grip of the coronavirus crisis.

September figures Sept 2020 on Sept 2019 MG +86.1% - most companies - 15% to - 25%

The Ford Ranger ute was Australia’s top selling vehicle outright in September, outselling the Toyota HiLux for the first time in three years. The September 2017 and September 2020 results are the only time a Ford motor vehicle has been number one in the monthly sales charts in Australia since the Falcon last beat the Holden Commodore in August 2005, according to data from Ford.
.....
Official sales figures released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) show total new-car sales in September 2020 were down by 21.8 per cent compared with the same month the previous year, with 68,985 vehicles reported as sold versus 88,181 in September 2019.

It was the 30th month in a row of year-on-year decline – the longest continuous slump since the Global Financial Crisis – and the weakest September result in 18 years, since 2002. It amounted to the fourth worst sales month so far this year.

Year-to-date, new-car sales are down by 20.5 per cent compared to the first nine months of 2019, with 644,891 vehicles reported as sold so far in 2020.

The state of Victoria was the biggest contributor to the sales slowdown in September, with just 10,447 new cars reported as sold (versus 24,686 for the same month last year), a sharp decline of 57.7 per cent. By comparison, new-car sales in NSW were down by 6.0 per cent, while Queensland was down by 7.9 per cent, and South Australia was down by 22.1 per cent.

YTD figures
17th MG 9,628 v 5,975 in 2019 = 61.1% increase
25th Renault 4,322 v 5,842 = 26.1% decrease

Holden's are stuffed, you won't see a sole Holden's dealership in Oz after this year, they will be an add on brand.
Currently ranked 13th 16,292 v 34,215 but since July unit sales have been;
July GMH 1,113 v MG 1,115
Aug GMH 555 v MG 1,217
Sep GMH 522 v MG 1,554

Question is will Port members and supporters get behind MG - especially in SA and keep buying them, so those old Holden's dealerships getting out completely, or stocking them as a minor brand, be attracted to go with MG vehicles or maybe double up with other SAIC brands like LDV utes?? This is an area the club could work the partnership to a higher level of influence.

I looked up the VFacts for December and therefore 2020 YTD around 8th of January and was going to update this thread with stats like I had for the 9 months to September, but never did

Someone at the club decided to do the same thing. in 2020 OZ car market declines by 13.7% MG increases by 83.2% (15,253 v 8,326) after a 82.7% growth in 2019. If they grow by another 50% in 2021 then they will rank as the 11th or 12th biggest selling brand in Oz.

In December 2020 MG sold 1,924 vehicles vs December 2019 720 units - 167% increase.

THE Port Adelaide Football Club defied COVID-19 to be a big improver in 2020 and its joint major partner MG Motor followed suit, becoming the nation’s fastest growing vehicle brand last year.

While Port Adelaide went from tenth in 2019 to sitting top for the entirety of last season before falling agonisingly short of a berth in the Grand Final, MG experienced rapid growth as well, experiencing an 83.2 per-cent increase in sales.

This strong growth was reflected across the entire MG model line-up, with each of the marque’s model ranges seeing positive sales growth in 2020. The MG ZS range was in the top-four best-selling small SUVs in December 2020, while the MG3 model continued its dominance as the best-selling light hatchback since August 2020 and the MG HS continued to gain momentum.

It has been a busy year for MG Motor, which launched its long-term partnership with Port Adelaide as well as three new models in Australia including the popular MG HS SUV, MG ZST and the fully electric MG ZS EV.

Peter Ciao, CEO, MG Motor Australia and New Zealand, said: “At MG we’re looking at the future with optimism, ensuring everyone can access a good vehicle at a great price. “We’re delighted to continue our strong market push in Australia and New Zealand – bringing further choice, value and premiumisation to our customers. We’re proud of our continuing partnership with Port Adelaide Football Club, and we look forward to the year ahead with the team.”

From Car advice's VFacts article on 6th January

Australian new-car sales surged in the last two months of 2020 as the nation came out of COVID-19 lockdowns – and the automotive industry is now grappling with stock shortages as a large proportion of buyers treated themselves to a new vehicle to holiday at home amid international travel restrictions.

Official figures released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries shows 95,652 new motor vehicles were reported as sold for the month of December 2020, an increase of 13.5 per cent compared to the same month the prior year.

December 2020 delivered the second month in a row of growth (November 2020 was up by 12.4 per cent) after 31 months of decline, the longest market slump since the Global Financial Crisis of a decade ago.

The data shows 916,968 new cars were reported as sold for the 2020 calendar year – down by 13.7 per cent compared to the prior year, but a recovery from the 48.5 per cent decline in April 2020, which was the sharpest slowdown since records were kept.

And earlier today the January VFacts were released.

MG in January 2021 sold 2,408 cars vs 919 in January 2020 ie 162% increase vs a market increase of 11.1%.

That puts MG in 11th spot just behind Mercedes-Benz Cars 2,443 cars ( Mercedes-Benz Vans are different).

Renault were never going to get this sort of growth. Spoke to my brother's mate on the weekend who owns a Mitsubishi dealership about the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance. He reckons Renault should just leave the Oz market and get a couple of their top models rebadged as Mitsubishi like already happens with one model he told me about. Last year they sold 6,904 vehicles down from 8,634 and peaked at about 12,000 in 2015 or 2016.

And the ZS has gone from 4th to 2nd in its category.

Official new-car sales figures for January 2021 released today show 79,666 vehicles were reported as sold, an increase of 11.1 per cent compared to the same month last year – and the best January since 2012 prior to the pandemic.

While the early signs are good, last month’s new-car sales tally was 5 per cent down compared to the five-year average of January sales results from 2015 to 2019, before the global pandemic hit.

Saw this today re the decline in Renault (and French cars in general) sales in Australia in recent years:

Data shows Renault sales in Australia have fallen for the past five years in a row and 2020 was the weakest result in eight years – representing a 40 per cent decline compared to its peak tally of 11,525 set in 2015.

Our sponsorship with Renault began in 2013 and ended in 2017.

Good; hope their marketing director is rueing their decision to drop us.

This is a great chart to show prospective sponsors, our supporter base really rewards those who financially support us.

"Sales of Chinese cars are up a staggering 152 per cent in the first two months of the year, led by reborn brand MG.
Australians bought more than 3000 MGs last month — a jump of 160 per cent compared to the same month in 2020. The brand moved into the top ten sellers for the first time in February, eclipsing well-known brands such as Volkswagen, Subaru, Honda and Mercedes-Benz.
The MG3 is now the most popular light car in the country, outselling former favourites the Mazda2 and Toyota Yaris. Its MG ZS is the second most popular small SUV in the country behind the Mitsubishi ASX."

Kia – 5871
Ford – 4712

February 2020 - no covid impact yet MG sell 1,163 units, February 2021 sell 3,017 - up 160.3% year on year. Last month I said they could finish 11th or 12th highest selling brand by end of 2021. They are now 10th for 2021 and not that far behind 8th.

Australian new-car sales have surged for the fourth month in a row, despite ongoing stock shortages due to production delays caused by the coronavirus crisis.

Official figures released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries show 83,977 new motor vehicles were reported as sold during February 2021, an increase of 5.1 per cent compared to the same month last year (79,940).

Prior to November 2020, the car industry had reported 31 months in a row of sales decline – the longest slump since the Global Financial Crisis of a decade ago.

MG has broken into the Top 10 for Australian new-car sales in February 2021 – for the first time ever. Finishing in eighth position ahead of Volkswagen and behind Nissan, it is the first time in Australian automotive history a Chinese brand has been inside the Top 10.

According to official data released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI), the brand led the way for Chinese models, selling 3017 MG models last month – an increase of more than 160 per cent compared to the same month last year.
.......
China was our fourth-largest source of new motor vehicles with a total of 5013 vehicles reported as sold in Australia during February, behind South Korea (12,305), Thailand (17,458), and Japan (29,438).

It the second month in a row Chinese vehicles have outsold models from Germany and the US. The data follows two years of strong growth for Chinese manufacturers, with more than 30,000 vehicles sold in 2020 – a 70.9 per cent increase from 2019.
