The Adelaide vs. Western Bulldogs game played in the wet last night was certainly low scoring - Crows 9.9-63 over Bulldogs 2.14-26 - but the scoring patterns were downright peculiar.

The vanquished Bulldogs scores in each quarter were 0.3, 1.4, 0.3, 1.4, the quarter by quarter scores 0.3, 1.7, 1.10, 2.14-26.

The Crows kicked 3.3 up to half time, 3.1 in first term, 0.2 in second term, then in the third term they added another 3.3 to double their half time score to 6.6 at the final change. And in the last term, they again kicked 3.3, finishing with a final total of 9.9-63.

Quite likely it was extremely cold and frost on the surface would have made kicking the ball almost impossible. 1908 was the coldest winter in Victoria’s recorded weather history (although January was the hottest month in Melbourne up to at least 2010).
 
A contender for the closest finals series ever, from the Heathcote District Football League, 1949. Most of the scores are in the 70s range and no margin greater than 7 points across 5 games.

In the NWFU on June 14, 1980, Cooee, also known as the Bulldogs, had their first win for the season when they defeated Devonport by 44 points: 19.19 (133) to 12.17 (89).

It’s strange from these figures that no goalless team has come from more than a 22-point half-time deficit to win. In fact, of the seven matches since 1936 where a team won after being goalless at half-time, in none of them was the eventual victor more than 12 points behind at the long interval. Moreover, there are many cases where a team has won from more than 22 points behind at half-time, but the nearest to occurring from a goalless team was St. Kilda’s comeback from 48 points down with only one goal on the board at half-time against Richmond in 1975.

My dad at half-time suggested to a Saints fan that Richmond’s goals should be counted as behinds so the game could be competitive.

Halfway into the last quarter he stood up and said to me let’s go home in embarrassment.

When Adelaide kicked a score of 15.15 (105) in the 1998 grand final, it was the 250th century score in a final, and also the 50th century score in a grand final.

Just to add to this - since the 2011 premiership season, when round 23 has featured every year, we have had two games where the team won by 23 points, the most recent being the final game of the 2018 premiership season were North Melbourne scoring 17.15.117 to defeat St Kilda 14.10.94

Adelaide's winning margin of 35 points in the 1998 GF is the equal highest where the teams had equal scoring shots (15.15-105 vs Nth Melb. 8.22-70).

Crazy that those two results happened in consecutive years.

Is that unique to grand finals or us that stat across all games? If not, what’s the highest in all games. If so, that is even crazier!

Matches with equal scoring shots that aren't draws all have had margins of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, or 50 pts.

From 1897 to 2019 there have been 524 (non-drawn) matches with equal scoring shots ranging from 8 (Essendon 3.5-23 vs Carlton 2.6-18 in R5 1900) to 38 (Melbourne 25.13-163 vs Sydney 22.16-148 in R22 1982) scoring shots each. All have a margin that is a multiple of '5'. (Its a consequence of having 1 and 6 point scores.)

Yeah actually I know that. Equal scoring shots mean the margin must be a multiple of five. But I didn’t know if that 35 would have been beaten in regular games.
 
In round 2 this year, Melbourne lost by 80 points (126-46) to Geelong despite winning the inside 50s by a whopping 72-48!
 
I remember in round 6 2004 there were three one point margins in the first two days.

On Friday night Richmond defeated hawthorn by one point; the next day the bulldogs defeated north by a point in Canberra and that night st kilda defeated Brisbane by one point. (Was a controversial point to as it was actually out of bounds on the full).
