The Adelaide vs. Western Bulldogs game played in the wet last night was certainly low scoring - Crows 9.9-63 over Bulldogs 2.14-26 - but the scoring patterns were downright peculiar.

The vanquished Bulldogs scores in each quarter were 0.3, 1.4, 0.3, 1.4, the quarter by quarter scores 0.3, 1.7, 1.10, 2.14-26.

The Crows kicked 3.3 up to half time, 3.1 in first term, 0.2 in second term, then in the third term they added another 3.3 to double their half time score to 6.6 at the final change. And in the last term, they again kicked 3.3, finishing with a final total of 9.9-63.

An interesting set of scores from the Latrobe Valley League, August 15, 1981:

Newborough 11.7 (73) lost to Warragul 15.17 (107)
Sale 11.7 (73) defeated Morwell 4.9 (33)
Traralgon 11.7 (73) defeated Yallourn-Yallourn North 3.8 (26)
Bairnsdale 11.7 (73) lost to Leongatha 11.9 (75)

The remaining game had a scoreline of Moe 11.11 (77) vs Maffra 11.10 (76)

Speaking of August 15, the date in 1908 was cursed for the Mitiamo FA's four teams:

Mitiamo 0.6.6 def. Calivil 0.4.4
Pyramid Hill 0.9.9 def. Mologa 0.4.4

Not every day you see a game without a goal, but an entire round is something special

Quite likely it was extremely cold and frost on the surface would have made kicking the ball almost impossible. 1908 was the coldest winter in Victoria’s recorded weather history (although January was the hottest month in Melbourne up to at least 2010).

A contender for the closest finals series ever, from the Heathcote District Football League, 1949. Most of the scores are in the 70s range and no margin greater than 7 points across 5 games.

1st semi: Heathcote North 11.8 (74) d Knowsley 10.12 (72)
2nd semi: Colbinabbin 11.8 (74) d Heathcote Rovers 10.10 (70)
preliminary: Heathcote Rovers 9.5 (59) drew with Heathcote North 7.17 (59)
preliminary replay: Heathcote North 11.14 (80) d Heathcote Rovers 10.13 (73)
grand final: Colbinabbin 11.11 (77) d Heathcote North 10.10 (70)

In the VFL on June 14, 1980, Footscray, also known as the Bulldogs, had their first win for the season when they defeated Fitzroy by 44 points: 25.17 (167) to 18.15 (123).
In the NWFU on June 14, 1980, Cooee, also known as the Bulldogs, had their first win for the season when they defeated Devonport by 44 points: 19.19 (133) to 12.17 (89).

Have that game on DVD. Fremantle won it by getting a break whilst the weather was dry and then when the rain did come neither team could do anything because the ball was just so slippery, until the Swans got two goals in a minute or so. Fremantle steadied after that to avoid the ignominy of losing after holding the opponent goalless to half-time – that happened to North Melbourne in 2004 and Hawthorn against West Coast in 2012. At that time the last occasion a team had won after being goalless at half time was Essendon in 1984 against Footscray; however the preceding two cases had been when neither team goalled in the first half.

Had Sydney won, they would have equalled the greatest actual half-time deficit by a team winning from goalless at half-time of 22 points. It’s rather weird that this has occurred twice, and both were against Geelong:

Round 15, 1902:

Geelong................2-3 (15)......4-6 (30)......5-6 (36).......5-6 (36)
Fitzroy................0-4 (4).......0-8 (8).......2-12 (24)......6-15 (51)

Round 2, 1910:

Geelong................2-6 (18)......4-6 (30)......5-8 (38).......6-9 (45)
Carlton................0-2 (2).......0-8 (8).......4-10 (34).....10-15 (75)

What’s just as odd is that two teams have won from goalless and 21 points down at half-time:

Round 6, 1899:

St. Kilda..............3-4 (22)......4-4 (28)......4-4 (28).......4-5 (29)
Carlton................0-0 (0).......0-7 (7).......1-7 (13).......4-7 (31)

(one can imagine how St. Kilda’s supporters felt as it was by eight points the closest they had got to a VFL win to that point, and they would have been heartbroken at losing after leading all day!)

Round 10, 1936:

North Melbourne........0-5 (5).......0-5 (5).......4-9 (33).......9-11 (65)
Fitzroy................2-3 (15)......3-8 (26)......3-10 (28)......3-12 (30)

One team has won from goalless at 20 points down at half-time:

Round 6, 1905:

Melbourne..............1-1 (7).......3-5 (23)......4-7 (31).......5-8 (38)
Carlton
................0-1 (1).......0-3 (3).......3-5 (23).......6-5 (41)

It’s strange from these figures that no goalless team has come from more than a 22-point half-time deficit to win. In fact, of the seven matches since 1936 where a team won after being goalless at half-time, in none of them was the eventual victor more than 12 points behind at the long interval. Moreover, there are many cases where a team has won from more than 22 points behind at half-time, but the nearest to occurring from a goalless team was St. Kilda’s comeback from 48 points down with only one goal on the board at half-time against Richmond in 1975.

I was there :(

My dad at half-time suggested to a Saints fan that Richmond’s goals should be counted as behinds so the game could be competitive.

Halfway into the last quarter he stood up and said to me let’s go home in embarrassment.

There was a game in the Adelaide Hills League several years ago - one of the teams scored 35:12 (222), which of course would normally mean they won the game easily. But in this instance they lost by 18 goals, because the other mob scored 49:36 (330). Obviously neither coach was interested in defence :)

Did this occur in the seniors?

When Adelaide kicked a score of 15.15 (105) in the 1998 grand final, it was the 250th century score in a final, and also the 50th century score in a grand final.

Just to add to this - since the 2011 premiership season, when round 23 has featured every year, we have had two games where the team won by 23 points, the most recent being the final game of the 2018 premiership season were North Melbourne scoring 17.15.117 to defeat St Kilda 14.10.94

Adelaide's winning margin of 35 points in the 1998 GF is the equal highest where the teams had equal scoring shots (15.15-105 vs Nth Melb. 8.22-70).
Equal: 1999 GF: Nth Melb. 19.10-124 vs Carlton 12.17-89.

Crazy that those two results happened in consecutive years.

Is that unique to grand finals or us that stat across all games? If not, what’s the highest in all games. If so, that is even crazier!

35 points is for Grand Finals. The greatest margin overall where the teams have had equal scoring shots is 50 points (4 instances).
Matches with equal scoring shots that aren't draws all have had margins of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, or 50 pts.

From 1897 to 2019 there have been 524 (non-drawn) matches with equal scoring shots ranging from 8 (Essendon 3.5-23 vs Carlton 2.6-18 in R5 1900) to 38 (Melbourne 25.13-163 vs Sydney 22.16-148 in R22 1982) scoring shots each. All have a margin that is a multiple of '5'. (Its a consequence of having 1 and 6 point scores.)

Yeah actually I know that. Equal scoring shots mean the margin must be a multiple of five. But I didn’t know if that 35 would have been beaten in regular games.

In round 2 this year, Melbourne lost by 80 points (126-46) to Geelong despite winning the inside 50s by a whopping 72-48!

I remember in round 6 2004 there were three one point margins in the first two days.

On Friday night Richmond defeated hawthorn by one point; the next day the bulldogs defeated north by a point in Canberra and that night st kilda defeated Brisbane by one point. (Was a controversial point to as it was actually out of bounds on the full).

Gembrook’s second semi and preliminary final losses in 1963 featured the same scoreline (more or less):
31/8/1963 UFTG 14.19 (103) v Gembrook 11.10 (76)
7/9/1963 Gembrook 11.10 (76) v Monbulk 15.13 (103)

The two Warburton v Yarraburn matches in 1957:
25/5/1957 Yarraburn 6.16 (52) v Warburton 6.10 (46)
13/7/1957 Warburton 5.16 (46) v Yarraburn 7.10 (52)

Yarra Junction kicked 72 points on four consecutive visits to Gembrook in 1999-2000. The Eagles kicked 11.6 (72) in a 119 point loss to Gembrook in round 1, 1999. Drawn to play at Gembrook again in round 15, the Junction finished on 10.12 (72) in a more respectable 40 point defeat. The two clubs met at the same venue in the second semi final. The consistent Eagle forwards kicked 11.6 (72) as Gembrook won by 89 points. The two great rivals next met at Gembrook early in the 2000 season and played out an exciting draw. The final scores: Gembrook 11.6 (72) to Yarra Junction 10.12 (72).

Wandin and Healesville seemed to be stuck in the same groove for a while there:
1919 Wandin 6.8 (44) v Healesville 5.10 (40)
1924 Wandin 6.8 (44) v Healesville 5.10 (40)
1928 Healesville 5.10 (40) v Wandin 6.8 (44)

1953 Belgrave 10.13 (73) v Olinda 5.9 (39)
2004 Olinda 5.9 (39) v Belgrave 10.13 (73)

1953 Gembrook 11.10 (76) v Silvan 7.13 (55)
2006 Gembrook 7.13 (55) v Silvan 11.10 (76)

1946 Belgrave 8.12 (60) v Monbulk 9.11 (65)
1957 Monbulk 9.11 (65) v Belgrave 8.12 (60)

Kinglake’s first two visits to Alexandra:
2008 Alexandra 16.14 (110) v Kinglake 16.9 (105)
2010 Alexandra 17.8 (110) v Kinglake 16.8 (104)

Woori Yallock booted 8.8 (56) in a 19 point home win over Warburton on 23 May 1931. The two clubs met again seven weeks later at Warburton, with the Tigers again kicking 8.8 (56) in a 43 point loss. The next time Woori Yallock played Warburton was on 11 June 1932. Woori’s score this time - 7.14 (56), as the Magpies won by 15 points. Seven weeks later at Warburton, the Tigers trailed by 31 points with a minute remaining; 8.8 (56) to 12.15 (87). The 56 party was spoilt when Teese goaled for Woori Yallock as the bell rang.

1933 Millgrove 10.14 (74) v Woori Yallock 5.5 (35)
1949 Millgrove 10.14 (74) v Woori Yallock 5.5 (35)

25/6/2005 Seville 11.5 (71) v Yarra Junct. 10.11 (71)

1945 Emerald 13.13 (91) v Belgrave 4.7 (31) (GF)

1953 Gembrook 7.9 (51) v Upwey 15.12 (102)

1987 Woori Yall. 17.11 (113) v Upwey 10.11 (71)

Powelltown and Gembrook produced a sensational 306 point shoot-out under sunny skies at Powelltown in the last round of 2003. Eight days later in the first semi, the same two teams could only scrape together a total of 62 points in the appalling quagmire at Warburton:
16/8/2003 P’town 25.13 (163) v G’brook 22.11 (143)
