Sometimes games produce results & scores that are just downright weird. There were quite a few of these in the early 1990s:
Round 6 1991: North Melbourne vs Sydney Swans at MCG - A high scoring match in which the Swans had kicked 19.6 to half time and had a 30 point lead. By the 10 minute mark of the third quarter they had extended their score to 21.8-134 and led by 36 points - but that would be the last time they would score for the rest of the day. North came back to trail by only 2 points at 3/4 time, and kicked 8.8 in the last quarter to win easily by 54 points - 27.26-188 to 21.8-134.
Round 11 1992: Geelong vs St Kilda at Kardinia Park - On face value, Geelong's 19.15-129 to 18.18-126 victory over St Kilda doesn't appear strange - but the Saints quarter by quarter scores were 3.3, 8.8, 13.13 & 18.18!
Round 3 1993: Brisbane Bears vs Melbourne at the GABBA - Keen to celebrate their permanent move to the GABBA, the Bears seemed set to make light work of the Demons, leading by 43 points halfway through the third quarter. Melbourne then staged an amazing revival, kicking 9.6 to nil to 3/4 time to lead by 17 points at the last change. But the Dees ran out of legs in the final quarter, the Bears coming back to win by 2 points.
Round 21 1993: Fitzroy vs Brisbane Bears at Princes Park - Fitzroy thumped future merger partners the Brisbane Bears by 110 points, 23.15-153 to 5.13-43. It was the quarter by quarter scores that were stranger, with the Lions leading 5.5 to 0.0 at 1/4 time, 11.7 to 1.3 at 1/2 time and an amazing 20.13 to 1.5 at 3/4 time, before the Queenslanders added some late goals.
Round 19 1994: St Kilda vs Brisbane Bears at Waverley Park - In wet and gloomy conditions, St Kilda kept the Bears to 1 goal in 115 minutes of play; but a 5 minute lapse in the third quarter allowed Brisbane to kick 7 goals and it was enough for the Bears to win 8.7-55 to 5.15-45. These teams often played strange games in Melbourne in the early 1990s; in Round 23 1991 St Kilda demolished Brisbane by 120 points 27.12-174 to 7.12-54 at Moorabbin, but the Bears had trailed by only 4 goals at half time. The Round 10 1992 game saw a similar result at Moorabbin, St Kilda winning by 108 points 25.18-168 to 9.6-60, but this time it was a reverse; the Saints had a 14 goal lead by half time, and eased up in the second half. The 1993 game at Waverley wasn't strange from a scoring perspective, but was the infamous hailstorm match.
Years later, strange games still occur, and often it seems at Football Park Adelaide:
Semi Final 2002 - Adelaide vs Melbourne at Football Park - The Adelaide Crows jumped the Demons early, leading 8.2 to 1.4 at 1/4 time and it already looked over. Melbourne then reduced the deficit to 17 points at 1/2 time, then took control in the third quarter to lead at one stage by 28 points. Adelaide steadied to trail by 22 at 3/4 time, then blew Melbourne apart in the last, winning by 12 points in the end.
Round 18 2004 - Adelaide vs North Melb at Football Park -The Adelaide Crows beat the Kangaroos in a low scoring game in which the scores were 0.3 to 1.7, 0.10 to 1.8, 2.17 to 2.10 & 5.19-49 to 5.12-42.
Round 15 2005 - Adelaide vs Bulldogs at Football Park - The Bulldogs had a score of 5.0 in the third quarter - their final score was 5.5, in a 74 point hiding from the Crows.
Which other weird games stick in your mind?
