Longest quarter ever?

What is the longest quarter ever? The last quarter of the Roos v Port game was 37:19. Surely that's gotta be one if the longest ever. Why did it go for so long anyway? Was someone stretchered off?

Depending on how old you are, the game you have referred to above might be the round 1, 1989 clash between Carlton and Footscray at Princes Park where the third quarter lasted 38:58.
There is another Blues vs Bulldogs game with a longer quarter: the round 17, 1998 game at Princes Park where the second quarter lasted 39:46.
 
On the Sunday of Round 6 1992 at Kardinia Park Geelong and Fitzroy played an extraordinary game, in which the Cats defeated the Lions as follows:

Geelong 6.5 11.11 16.19 25.25-175 d. Fitzroy 5.1 9.4 10.8 11.11-77

The memorable match, which despite the eventually one-sided scoreline showed off some great skills from players of both teams, and 32-years on it remains the highest aggregate score 36.36-252 and biggest winning margin (98-points) for a symmetrical game. Given football is much lower scoring now than in the 1990s and games with aggregates of 250-points or more very rare I don't think the aggregate is going to be challenged any time soon, but the margin might he surpassed (for example a game that finishes 20.20-140 to 5.5-35).

Within the match itself there are some interesting scoring patterns as follows:

  • Geelong kicked 6.5 in the first term, then the inverse of this (5.6) in the second
  • The Cats' half-time score of 11.11-77 matched the Lions' full-time score.
  • Fitzroy's 2.7-19 in the second half matched their 19-point deficit at half time.
  • Geelong outscored Fitzroy by 1.4-10 in the first term and 1.3-9 in the second, and Fitzroy would score 1.4-10 in the third term and 1.3-9 in the last quarter.
  • Geelong's second half score of 14.14-98 matched the Cats' winning margin of 98-points, courtesy of Fitzroy making up their 19-point deficit at the long break after half time.

I remember a Footscray v Geelong game I was at. The Western Oval, only time I had been there. Tom Hafey was Geelong coach, so possibly 1983 Round 12. As I seem to remember Ian Robinson and his moustache as one of the umpires. :moustache:


The quarter dragged on and on. It seems there was a power outage and they couldn't ring the siren.

So some guy with a bell came down to the boundary line and rang it, turned around, and walked back up into the stands. Problem was, the umpires didn't hear it, so the game continued.

In the end, Tom Hafey had to come down from the coaching box and go on to the field to get the umpires attention. But the umpires waved him away (that is why I remember Robinson and his moustache), eventually Hafey was able to explain the situation to the umpires and they stopped the quarter.

No idea how long the quarter was, and I assume as the power was out they had no way to record the duration.
 
Kangaroos fans obviously weren't very happy about the 70-point thrashing handed out by the Brisbane Lions at Norwood, but I (and no doubt many other accountants) very much liked the final scores of Brisbane 16.16-112 d. North Melbourne 6.6-42, a margin of 10.10-70 like perfectly balanced debits and credits in the general ledger.

I went to AFL Tables to see the last time there was a symmetrical game resulting in a 70-point margin before like 18.18-126 to 8.8-56 or perhaps a struggling St Kilda or University team had been thrashed 12.12-84 to 2.2-14 in a game played before World War I but to my amazement this afternoon's Lions vs. Kangaroos match was the first time there had ever been such a game.
 
Round 3 this year in the VFL, we had this score:
North 12.4 (76) - Brisbane 9.21 (75)
Brisbane kicked 3 fewer goals, but somehow almost won the game.
 
In the Western Football Netball League on the weekend, Werribee Districts had a draw with Yarraville Seddon, the scores being 10.12 (72) apiece. Two weeks earlier Werribee Districts played in another draw, against Caroline Springs, the scores then being Werribee Districts 11.6 (72) to Caroline Springs 10.12 (72).
 
In the 1966 SANFL Grand Final, Sturt doubled Port Adelaide's score in a game of perfect symmetry, the Double Blues trouncing the Magpies by 56-points winning 16.16-112 to 8.8-56.

Not to my knowledge but I personally watched a match in the WRFL in 2017 between Parkside and Tarneit. Parkside did not score for the entire second half and somehow still won.

Collingwood were all at sea against bogey team Hawthorn from the opening bounce to the final siren in last Saturday's twilight match at the MCG, but their scoring in the match was somewhat odd. Entering time on of the third quarter Collingwood had kicked an appalling 1.12, but from there inexplicably found their radar and kicked a very accurate 8.1 for the rest of the game to finish on 9.13-67.

The improvement in accuracy failed to help the Magpies however, with the Hawks handing out a 66-point thrashing to effectively end Collingwood's season.

I find similar things happen fairly often...the pressure is off and suddenly goals are kicked from everywhere.
The Eagles were 2.15 at 3/4 time against North before kicking 6.2 in the final term.

Essendon vs Sydney 2012, Essendon went from 2.15 to 11.16 at the final siren... and almost came back from 46 down at 3/4 time in the process. Had a potential shot after the siren but ruined it by playing on

I remember that game from 2012, it was pretty freaky.

While as mentioned games where inaccurate teams find accuracy later in the match are more memorable, the inverse of this - games where a previously accurate team loses focus and begin to spray shots all over the place - seem much rarer. I haven't seen a game where for example a team has 10.1 at half time, before kicking 1.10 after the long break to finish 11.11-77, at least not for some years.

I've seen something like that happen a couple times recently with Sydney

First the game against GWS in R21 last year, started 12.0, then 3.6 after that to finish at 15.6
Swans vs Freo in round 9 this year also started 10.0 and 11.1, but finished 13.9

Also Essendon in R17 2014 were a remarkably accurate 14.1 through 3 quarters vs Collingwood, only to kick 2.6 in the final term and end up at a fairly run-of-the-mill 16.7

Finally Brisbane vs Carlton in round 6 2007: Lions were 18.1 (!!!!) at one point, then six straight behinds to 18.7, then 3.3 after that for a final score of 21.10 (136)

Wet weather in Perth yesterday brought low-scoring games for all five WAFL matches played on Saturday afternoon, most final scores inaccurate as teams struggled through mud and rain in the inclement conditions.

In one of the matches however - Perth vs. South Fremantle at Lathlain Park - the Demons and Bulldogs seemed to have become confused about what type of football they were playing, as the progressive scores from this venue looked like a soccer game. At quarter time South led Perth 2.0 to 0.0, and at half time it was 3.0 to 2.0. The Demons and Dogs got to 4.0 each before both teams finally missed late in the third quarter and headed into the final term 4.1 each, before the match finished in a 7.1-43 to 6.2-38 victory to Souths, the Bulldogs kicking the match-winning goal in the dying seconds.

Thus ended an extraordinary match - a low-scoring but strangely accurate game played in the wet - producing a final aggregate of 13.3-81. Contrast this with East Perth vs. East Fremantle, which finished 4.9-33 to 3.12-30, an aggregate final score of 7.21-63.
