Rasheed Wallace is joining the Boston Celtics, an NBA source said, giving the Celtics one of the most important free agents on the marketplace as they attempt to return to the championship.

The Boston Globe reported Wallace will sign for two years at the mid-level exception.

Wallace won a championship with the Detroit Pistons in 2004 after arriving in a mid-season trade, although his career has been noted just as much for his volatile interactions with officials and contentious relationships with coaches. However, the strong presence of veterans such as Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen in the Celtics' locker room should keep Wallace in line and bring the focus to his positive attributes: the 6-foot-11 Wallace is a scoring threat from the low block to the three-point arc and a long-armed, savvy defender.

"As much as Rasheed's a headache, teammakes like him and he's a winner," another NBA executive said.

After trade rumors involving Ray Allen and Rajon Rondo surfaced last month it appeared the Celtics might be trying to shift on the fly, at the risk of breaking up the core that won the 2008 NBA championship. Now they have landed a piece that makes them a prime contender to win again next season, with an emphasis on the short term. Wallace will be 35 in September and made joining a championship-caliber team a priority this off-season, with the Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs on his short list of teams of interest.

But Boston was always the leading contender, a positioned strengthened by a dinner meeting with Wallace involving Garnett, Pierce, Allen, coach Doc Rivers and owner Wyc Grousbeck last week.

Just about the best free agent available on the market right now, and we nabbed him, and will give us much needed depth and firepower, and I'd say we're favourites now to win back the East, if everyone stays healthy.

Sadly this probably does mean the end of Leon Powe at Boston, but still, this is a very good signing by the Celtics :)
 
Handy! He was absolutely trash talking us for being actors or classless or something during the season, but I guess the players can just let it slide.

As an aside, this surely makes us the most hated side in the NBA. Rondo and Garnett didn't make too many friends during the playoffs, while some people hate on Pierce just for fun, and we may resign Marbury, Sheed is antagonistic as all hell, and Perk is a thug.

I wouldn't say that makes us faves to win back the east.

We still have no back up PG, no real cover for Pierce at SF and no cover should KG or Sheed go down injured.

Danny still has alot of work to do before we have all bases covered.

Like resign BBD, try and get Grant Hill on board and find a back up PG (probably Lue)

Great signing for what we needed though.
 
don't mean to be the party pooper, but as a Pistons fan, i think Sheed has very little left in the tank. Most of last season he looked bored and disinterested. Maybe a change of scenery will do him good? I dunno. I just think all you can really hope for is 8-10ppg. I don't think he's even as good a rebounder as PJ Brown was, probably a slightly better one-on-one defender, and obviously a better three point shooter. But with KG already being a guy who likes to drift 15-20 feet from the basket on offense, I'm not sure this is a great fit for the Celts.

I would have preferred to see him go to Orlando.

90% of his shots were jumpers. He averages less than 1 offensive board per game. He gave up net negatives in PER at both PF and C.

Nothing wrong with being a jump shooter but he has to shoot better. because he is not getting to the FT line (about 1FT every 7 FG attempts, as a comparison Dirk gets 1 FT every 2.9 FG attempts).

This could all be a result of him getting lazy and maybe playing for a winner will rejuvenate him, but this is nowhere near the Sheed of old.

And CP, you have no idea. best FA available on the market? To be pedantic, they are all still on the market. In real terms, is Sheed better than Bibby, Felton, Verejao, Bass, Andersen, Iverson, McDyess, Odom, Lee, Miller, Marion or Millsap??

The answer is no.

FWIW Perkins will win the starting job and have minimal competition doing it.

Im not sure if he is a great fit for Boston either
 
While I largely agree with both rob and Funky, look at it this way: Wallace replaces the minutes taken up by Brian Scalabrine last season, in a team that pushed the EC champs to 7 games without our best big. Who you rather, Wallace or Scal?
 
Celtics will be awsome defensively. sure we have no backup for Garnett just like cleveland have no backup for lebron and orlando no backup for Howard. U just have to pray your stars don't get injured. The only concern is the bench but Ainge will add to it. If the C's stay healthy they will be champions again.

They'll have back up for KG if the match any offers for BBD.

Failing that Powe might be resigned on the cheap.

this is why i hate stats.

the guy can defend the post,and is a very intelligent basketballer who will do whatever role his team needs him to do.He also is a proven winner.Any PER or % on that?
