Not sure where to post this but I now know 4 blokes all around my age (62-67) who have all been diagnosed with prostrate cancer (one has had his prostrate removed recently) over the past 6 months.

Did my 6 monthly PSA test (have an enlarged prostrate) and given it has increased again am now going in a few weeks to have a biopsy. Yep, they put forty needles between your balls and a-hole into your prostrate.

Do everything right, exercising 5-6 sessions a week at the gym, eating well and generally looking after myself and this s**t happens!
I hope everything goes well for you. I have a few mates in a similar position to you, so I understand how you are going/feeling.

Whilst it sounds concerning hopefully all good.

I’ve battled rising PSA levels the past few years, having said that the last year it went down but it’s still high.

I’ve had a biopsy, which isn’t much fun afterwards pissing and blowing blood, so maybe hold off the women ;) 2 MRI’s and a PET scan. That was all with my old urologist who has since retired. My new one is less concerned.

There are other reasons for high PSI readings, but best to be safe than sorry

While we are on the - get your bits tested and checked…. Do the poo kit. And get the colonoscopy if it needs it. Colonoscopy is so easy (even with the prep) and it’s a good sleep, and they can deal with polyps while they are there.

Also, if you are travelling long haul flights, PLEASE get up and move about and move your legs and feet regularly. We just lost our best mate (fit and healthy physically otherwise) after a long haul flight to London. Hadn’t even stepped into passport control when he felt unwell after getting off the plane. what ensued was incredibly traumatic for us all and sadly he passed away two days later. Don’t understand why they don’t constantly remind people to move other than a brief mention in the preamble. They used to do it more often than that.

Just an update.

Had the biopsy last Thursday got the results yesterday and I’m all clear. The more disturbing part was having 38 insertions (think the norm is 12-20). No wonder my nether regions were a bit tender and significantly bruised.

As George Kramer said a bit of blood when pissing but that seems to have rectified itself the last day or so. We stay away from getting a bj in the short term. Not a good 👀.

Must be old mans corner

Have a colonoscopy in my future - bowel screen result - so when your pack arrives in the post please do it - I think the blood is from strain rather than polyps but better safe than sorry

On top of that I also have an aggressive cataract to get looked at (with one eye)

Interesting few years for me

Though a fitter , older more active mate is borderline diabetic and my sugars are fine - go figure

I've got that to look forward to next year once I turn 50. Already had one colonoscopy in my life for blood in a stool sample. My GP was trying to investigate if my low iron levels were the result of blood loss, and where it might be coming from. In the end, they found nothing but some internal haemorrhoids - one must have burst and bled during my last sample. So we're still no closer to working out what's causing my low iron (ferritin) levels.

Getting old sucks. But the poo kit is absolutely brilliant at detecting abnormalities and the beauty of the colonoscopy is they can get rid of the polyps at the same time which for most people is all that’s needed. R2R did they do an endoscopy as well to ensure there were no ulcers in the stomach?

Yes, they did. All that was found there was a hiatus hernia.

I’m bloody glad 23 is over… we lost our good mate to a DVT on day 1 of our 6 week European holiday and I had a close brush with death after an ulcer burst (no symptoms until it was dire) and I lost a lot of blood on a recent overseas trip (last day of our holiday). In the overall scheme of things, I’m grateful I still get to bitch and moan about things… hoping 24 is kinder… but must admit, I’m rethinking overseas holidays…

Have to agree with you Jenny - 2023 had some incredibly poo moments - I lost my dear old mum the day Sydney stole our finals chances!
On a positive my aneurysm has decided to behave itself which is incredible as I spend a fair bit of time in remote locations in Indonesia and pun intended it was always in the back of my brain! my neurosurgeon has told me I can go to MRIs every 18 months which is excellent.
Christmas was a massive event and build up so now I need to lose some kegs get back exercising to be ready for a trip with my lad to Sumatra! I hate getting older but having adultish kids who want to hang out with me makes it all worth it.
Hoping we all have an excellent 2024.

Glad you’re still around Jen! Once you suffer significant illnesses, whether physical or mental, life perspectives tend to shift, the needs and the wants often become more obvious. Sorry for your loss of a close friend as well.

Myself, I’ve really had a gutful of working in a health system with constant changes to Medicare, Centrelink, NDIS and whatever else associated with forms and paperwork! Looking back I reckon I had a couple of burnout episodes during the pandemic. In the last few months, I’ve worked less and purely focusing on better health and fitness. Have been doing tons of running and racquet sports lately. My mentality also changing to being more kind to myself, rather than have to put up with all the toxic mofos online/offline.

My life tip for any footy fans: look after yourself better than you pay attention to footy.

In the last 12 months I have transformed myself into a sports and fitness junkie. Even when I’m unable to do sports, I enjoy the walks more too. Walking was never really my thing in the past, but lately, I’ve come to appreciate the joys of it other than the fitness benefits.

I’ve even bought a footy a month ago, just to kick around at a local oval for goal kicking sessions. The best part of sports/fitness isn’t just to help you live longer, but it’s going to help you die happy.

As someone that hits the gym at around 5am, 6 days a week and runs, I can tell you the best minimal exercise everyone on here must do every day, is walking. You should really be striving for 10,000 steps per day as well.

If you could add some weight bearing exercises, 2-3 times a week. Thats a massive bonus.

Unless you physically cannot walk, there is no excuse to not walk daily. The health benefits of basic walking are priceless.

For those that dont walk daily, start small and keep it simple. Begin with a walk around your block to build your fitness. Listening to music/podcast also helps to form a distraction and makes the exercise a lot more doable.

I’ve been walking nearly every day since COVID, if I don’t I feel weird and I never walked.

Did Mt Lofty the other day, thought I would die but survived.

Also go to the gym for weights sessions about 4-5 days a week, at my age I’m not going to be huge but I’m happy to just push some weights and exert myself, find myself getting niggles when I push to much, especially shoulders with the left one taking about 4 months so far to get back to normal

Well done, you are more physically active than the majority of the population. It may seem deceptive when you see everyone in the gym, but when you compare your activity to the rest of society, you are leaps and bounds ahead of them. That only magnifies too as you get older, most older people are inactive.

Better to be consistent as you have been then to push too hard, that may lead to injury that discourages you from training.

Walking was and has been for a very long time underrated by many in the fitness industry, however its clearly been shown through many studies the many health benefits of daily walking.

There is no doubt in my mind that walking is the gateway to leading a very healthy life.

Its also important to combine your exercise with a high protein diet, as it will not only support your athletic performance but also help you to maintain/lose weight. Which is about 1 to 1.5grams/pound.

Muscle is regarded as metabolic organ of longevity.

If I can get even just a single poster on here to watch this video and make changes because of it, I will be very happy. I will argue for anyone on here who doesnt exercise or have their diet in check or see its importance, its one of the most powerful videos you will watch to change your mind.

Its a TedTalk by Dr Gabriel Lyon who has dedicated her life to studying geriatrics and nutrition and is a well respected leading physician in her field of expertise.

If anything, I find walking has improved my mental well-being more than the physical aspect. Like I said I’m more a sports person, and preferring to run and whack/kick balls than just plain walking.

For example, with walking, I find myself enjoying the more simple things in life, like the breeze, the sunshine (and Vitamin D), and just some alone time to reflect on what I want with life. I’m also noticing myself appreciating more the trees and structures around me, kind of like a conscious spiritual meditation. 😄

I would highly recommend the walk from Glenelg to Brighton and back along the beach track for your mental health.

Its a very peaceful, calming scenic path. It will relax you like nothing else. But chose your time if you want to be alone, dont bother going after 7am on a weekend as its very busy.

Ive gone either at 5am or late at night (during the week) and its just perfect.

Thanks for the video - a hit the gym with HIIT classes 3 times a week (two are in the altitude room) and then do a one hour strength session with my PT each week which focuses on building muscle strength. We have been discussing what was in this video so it reinforces it.

Last week I lifted 110 kgs in the trap bar with 3 lots of 8 reps. A PB. He gets me doing trap bar, bench presses, sled pullings, all sorts of arm and leg exercises. I tell him don’t let me set the weight or number of reps. Each hour session I’m burning like 500+ calories, you feel the burn in the arms and legs. But you know what, it feels great.

When you end up having heart attack and then the prostate stuff, you get to understand how you will deal with it - you can either feel sorry for yourself or get off the canvas and live life. This is no dress rehearsal.

I've been hitting the gym consistently now for two months straight - it's so easy to get an illness or injury/niggle and then suddenly it's two weeks or more without any sessions and it seems hard to go, even when you know you'll feel way better if you do

But yeh got the momentum at the moment so hoping I can have zero interruptions

Probably helps I have a legitimate goal at the moment - getting married in August and hoping to get down to 99.9kg for it - currently sitting around 105 - I was 111 at the start of the year so on track for it
