I think this thread needs a bump. Lot of posts about Phillipou but this kid is great.

I've rewatched the Doggie game again and with a bit of luck Mitch could have quite easily ended up with 5 goals. Missed an easy set shot early on and another left foot snap which he usually nails

Even so, 17 possessions and 3 goals is an impressive effort from an 8 game player who is being asked to play as an undersized "tall" forward and help out in ruck contests.
Equal top for distance covered along with Hill. The kid is a machine and is gonna rip some games apart one day. Its also when you see him next to others that you see what a huge unit he is, he'll put some blokes in hospital over his career that's for sure.

But will be smiling as he does it

Also got a free kick 20 meters out which they ended up awarding to Caminiti as a 50 instead

I've been a big fan but also quite surprised with how good he looks as a forward

I remember seeing his VFL stats in the breakdowns the club used to give and seeing the ridiculous percentage of his touches that were contested then thinking hmmm….this looks interesting. Then it was the breakaway from a pack left foot goal while running towards the boundary in the VFL that got me thinking this guy could be something special. I try not to get too carried away with young guys these days but he’s looking super exciting.

For a kid who is 19 , what he is showing he is going to be Dangerfield quality - his attack on the football is unreal for a 19yr old.

Covid probably helped us on this one. If the draft was done again he'd clearly go top 20 which would have lost us access

He made a bit of a late run too though. His best form was just before the draft so he was tacked on to the clubs wish lists rather than stuck on top of the pile. One thing you get access to with the academy that no one else does is witnessing their attitude. With MO his drive and competitiveness are what sets him apart not his skill set. We had a window in to that others didn't

I think footy ended about June or July that year from memory. He had a cracking cracking game in the Vic Country v City game and then everything was called off not long after

If the season had of continued he could well have continued to rise up the order

Yep both he and Windy were the classic 'guys who perform at champs and then go back to sandy and dominate' Usually a great sign for success at AFL level. Although they never got to the go back and dominate part.

Probably a good thing for us that they didn’t. Both would have been pushing top 20 if they had.

He also grew 10cm in a year had a huge growth spurt
15 cm in 18 months. He went from 176 to 191 from the start of 2020 season to the end of 2021. I think he’s probably still learning how to be a big bodied player and use his size. That’s why I think he’s got so much upside.

I think it’s also why he’s so good! Didn’t grow up some lanky forward type who was told to lumber around. Played small forward and mid before his growth spurt knows how’s to be agile

I might be on my own healer but I kinda of imagine Owens to have a Fraiser Gehrig type career. In my mind, I see him floating around for a bit as a big mid who eventually becomes just a huge forward. Happy for him to do a Bont/Fyfe type career instead though
I think he’s played forward because we need a forward but under 18s and at sandy he played his best as a midfielder laying tons of tackles and getting the ball in tight

His real POD is how quickly he can take the ball and get it on his foot. A lot of his goals have been from an almost instantaneous movement from hand to foot. He'll rip the ball out of the air and it's straight onto his foot. He might not be super fast as far as speed goes but his mental reflexes are outstanding.

Hundred per cent. Amazing ability to go from a marking threat to a crumbing threat in a split second.
