This acquisition kind of reminds me of when we signed Chol. Mabs couldn't crack a best 22 spot in his six years at Richmond and was very much a fringe player when he signed with us. He was a cheap, low risk signing. Himmelberg is essentially in the exact same position as Chol when we signed him as an unrestricted free agent back in 2021.
The Nathan Ablett approach. Harry Himmelberg would be a great pick up.
He’s from Wagga. His family moved to Brisbane around the time his brother was drafted to gws
He spent a year or so in Brisbane academy but was ineligible to be drafted by them
Recruiting players with south east Queensland links is clearly a part of the strategy. How many times did you hear about Clohesy being a member of our academy in his younger years? Same with Chol who spent time growing up in Brisbane.
The Lions did the same thing with players like Charlie Cameron, Nakia Cockatoo and Callum Ah Chee when they made their rise up the ladder so it's a sound strategy if you do it correctly.

Still a bit off it imo but you're also right to a degree. Think he should take a big stride next year especially with better delivery via new players like Rioli, Noble and a full season of Weller.
Plus a proper pre season without a broken collarbone and surgery
I may be optimistic.
I think people were way too harsh on Walter in his first year. He still brought great pressure and was decent in contest.
Read was unbelievable stick when he was 15-16. I thought he put some weight on in pre-season and will do again this off-season. I predict he will be stronger, 4-5 kg extra. It will not take 3 years for him to contribute.
We could play only 2 talls. It will be interesting if AFL cancels sub with 5 players on bench. It could open up a position for Moyle.

I guess people compare Walter to someone like Ben King. King seemed to offer more in his first year in front of goals and with marks.
Different players and different teams, to be fair. I like Walter, but I question his football smarts a little. Relies on athleticism and size, so he needs to learn a lot—and quickly—to compensate for the fact that players are now as big/strong as him.
He mistimed a lot of marks but I would say no current KPF has the same pressure, speed.
As far as I remember, King started in VFL first 7-8 games? And was average in first year. Even this year people wanted to drop Ben for lack of effort.
I have a lot of time for Walter. He goes hard. He was insane in Darwin game against Cats.

Ben was fine. 14 games, 17 goals. Better than most of our experienced forwards, even now.
Jed in 14 games, kicked 11 goals.
Obviously different players. King took more marks, but didn’t play ruck like Walter. Walter has way more tackles.
But I’m gonna rank forwards on their ability to kick goals, ultimately. Everything else is secondary.
However, I do think he can be a perfect foil for King.
Anyway, to keep it on topic, Himmelberg will be fine and perfect depth. May even get more games than we think if he exceed expectations.

Day has some nice games this season. But injury, as always, held him back.To be honest, I never watched Himmelberg. A bit underwhelming views from Crows fans.
Let's see if he's better than Day
Himmelberg is surely more durable, at the very least.
