I think we're all very much aware of that, what with Mainwaring's kids not having a father and Ben Cousins continuously in trouble etc.

I just thought it was a poor attempt at continuing a shitfight. Eagles admin stuffed up during that time. It's nothing new. This article is just pointless muckraking.
I agree its muckraking. I also agree my post hit a raw nerve and may be deleted. But when fans want to spread fairy dust and ignore the harsh reality of what can happen then more will die.

Wouldn't oppose it, that's for sure. It would be largely symbolic anyway, the rest of the admin now were not from that time.

Whilst he's there, feigning not knowing - I'm fine with anything that keeps the pressure up.

Mainwaring led the young guys astray and as a reward they name there best clubman award after him.
Ken judge was sacked because he wanted to stop the drug use. So in comes Worsfold who turned a blind eye to the behaviour and they named there best and fairest after him.

The corruption starts from the top Nisbett has to go

Look this has been one massive sad exercise, in hindsight many things could have been done better. What would happen if this same thing started ramping up in 2017 ?.

As I've said regularly, in sport your top players are treated differently to your fringe players, in relation to "crimes". Top player = smooth over ( cover up ), fringe player = suspension / there's the door !!!. Winning covers all evils.

Nisbett = Teflon.

There is a long term staff member that is still at the club and in the coaches box on game days that for the life of me I don't know how he kept his job.

Timmy must know where the skeletons are stored, because for the life of me, I can't see what he does at the Eagles ?. His footy resume is very very very thin.

Holds the daggers ?.

Pathetic club operation during the 2000s. Nothing will happen now as it's too late but wish someone had stood up when relevant. Sydney 2006 premiers in my eyes.

Except it was probably equally as rife at the Swans and every other AFL club.

It is pretty well accepted that lots of prominent people in the AFL media do it, there are strong rumours of multiple AFL coaches did it and these guys are way past the silly years of 18-25 Judd mentioned.

Interesting that this article was written in February 2007.

https://www.crikey.com.au/2007/02/28/west-coast-footballers-a-law-unto-themselves/

Clearly the WA media at the time knew what was going on, but were worried about the ramifications of printing it, as evidenced by this paragraph.

When, in 1991, West Coast’s brilliant Aborigine Chris Lewis bit the finger of Melbourne’s Todd Viney in a much-publicised incident during a game at the MCG, one young football writer made the mistake of reporting the incident for The West Australian which, of course, splashed the story all over its back page. The following day, at a club press conference, the same reporter was publicly assailed by then Eagles chairman, Terry O’Connor, for writing the story about Lewis – even though it had been given similar shock-horror treatment in Melbourne. The implication was clear: West Australian media stick up for West Australians; leave that sort of Eagles muckraking to the boys “over east”. It was an astonishing performance from the noted QC. But it said so much about West Coast players, their exalted place in football-mad Perth, and how the club expected them to be treated by the local media. With kid gloves.

Amazing how true it all is, ten years down the track and I have no idea how Nisbett was not ordered to step aside.

"In 2001 the club was informed that some five or six players were observed outside a hotel smoking marijuana. Despite the latter report coming from a senior member of the coaching staff the [blank] put in place an internal investigation which whitewashed the complaint."

Ahh yes, the mighty green performance enhancing drug. "Strip them of their flag, right now!" - Herald Sun.

you have nothing to backup that it was equally rife at the swans.....

where as buddy got caught twice on the gear at the hawks.... maybe we should take a closer look at your mob as well. Atleast my outlandish assumption has some type of evidence...

Calm down - I said all clubs and I know it has been rife at the Hawks at times.

We also know that an ex-swan was one of the first players to come out and say it was a massive problem - which kind of indicates he might have witnessed a thing or two. And he was roundly shouted down by all and sundry for going public.

Nothing is going to change while everyone helps hide the problem.

How about a long time Swans player claiming 75% of players were on the gear?

Dale Lewis while at the Swans in the early 2000s said he estimated 75% of players had used illicit drugs. Hard to imagine where he drew his conclusions from if it wasn't from observing Sydney players.

Hey if someone wants to chuckle it up don't forget the human cost

I'm chuckling it up over the fact the HUN seems so hell bent on tarnishing our name for 10+ years.
In no way am I laughing at the cost to life that this incident and the many drug related incidents have resulted.

Fact is, this kind of "journalism" does nothing to stop the drug trade, nor question how the players have access to so much product, nor how to seek help if you fall in the trap, nor how to look after your mates if they become addicted, nor how to see signs of people going down the wrong path, nor how to live a healthy lifestyle devoid of drugs, nor how basically the entire league and (probably) a large amount of 20 somethings in our society have almost unrestricted access to heavy drugs.

This isn't an anti-drug story, it's an anti-West Coast story.

To be fair he successfully led the club in turning around the culture (as far as we know), so thats something to be said for him. West Coast fans often complain about what we assume is his influence in preventing us from going for certain players who have question marks off field - Dustin Martin, Harley Bennell, Cam McCarthy as examples.

West Coast is also well regarded in a business off field sense.
