Gillard criticised ‘restrictions on testing and the confidentiality obligation which restricts a club dealing with a potential drug problem’.
Scale.
The HS seem to have an exclusive on this now decade old story every 3 months or so...
Can we move on yet?
was it to heroin? And Paul Kelly had to publicly deny the Swans had a drug problem. Not sure Dale was welcome back to the club after that. Of course, the swans went on their merry way and won the 05 flag, smack bang in the middle of the 'illicit drug' era.
I think we're gonna need a bigger *
Have a read through the report if you have time Keys, quite often Gillard says he didn't believe what players told him in interviews, that they were evasive and he lacked the ability to compel them to tell the truth. Also said it was likely drug use was involved in a lot of cases where it wasn't certain. Now only the most blinkered West Coast supporter will try to argue that the club couldn't have down more to address these issues at the time but the above is an important point.
The club may well have doubted the honesty of the players when they were saying the stories weren't true, but the inability of clubs to conduct their own testing or have access to the results of the testing that is done just makes it that much more difficult to act on what is arguably unsubstantiated hearsay. It's also possible the club didn't give a **** or should have investigated the claims more rigorously but it's significant that the report acknowledges there were restrictions with how the club could have dealt with the problem
This is true. Adelaide probably got close to the kind of numbers engaging at the time but didnt have individuals go as far. And I only know that because I live in Adelaide. May have been just as bad in Melb
Just reading through the report, it's terrific that Beau Waters eating a goldfish is listed with the other player misconduct. One of the great premiership celebrations.
I didn't know the extent of possible cover up and this is the most public allocation of awareness and culpability of Worsfold and Nisbett I've seen but I admit I'm not close to the issue. I was only saying that it doesn't surprise me it made news if it's only now been leaked (or that they'd be sensationalist and suggest a tainted flag). Interesting on the Chick timing comment though. Did you have a view on who/how it was leaked?
I think he/she is (poorly) saying 'hey yeah **** you we won' lessens the human tragedy in all of this with Chris being the obvious reflection.
West Coast keeping TN on mystifies me, they have done a really good job to change their culture but he has been kept on when he would of had absolutley full knowledge of what was going on.
Except it was probably equally as rife at the Swans and every other AFL club.
It is pretty well accepted that lots of prominent people in the AFL media do it, there are strong rumours of multiple AFL coaches did it and these guys are way past the silly years of 18-25 Judd mentioned.
Fukn lol.
Funny how these 'leaks' seem to happen at significant times in a season i.e. Grand Final week, opening round of the season week.
Clearly just another re-make of the same shit sanger in a desperate attempt to boost readership from a grubby, Slobbo piloted newspaper.
I'm chuckling it up over the fact the HUN seems so hell bent on tarnishing our name for 10+ years.
In no way am I laughing at the cost to life that this incident and the many drug related incidents have resulted.
Fact is, this kind of "journalism" does nothing to stop the drug trade, nor question how the players have access to so much product, nor how to seek help if you fall in the trap, nor how to look after your mates if they become addicted, nor how to see signs of people going down the wrong path, nor how to live a healthy lifestyle devoid of drugs, nor how basically the entire league and (probably) a large amount of 20 somethings in our society have almost unrestricted access to heavy drugs.
This isn't an anti-drug story, it's an anti-West Coast story.
Are there still people out there that think 'drug culture' is/was a West Coast thing and not a league wide thing?
West Coast here = Essendon.
Other clubs = Geelong /
Melbourne / Gold Coast.
It's how these things work.
I didn't mean to slam McCarthy or suggest that he has drug/other off field issues. Its just that we as fans thought West Coast should throw out hat into the ring when he was going cheap but there was some suggestion that West coast didn't want to go near him due to fear of possible issues.Apart from the bit where you actually sounded Cam McCarthy out, solid post.

Okay, thats really interesting... was that common knowledge? I may have missed that.I was more coming from the perspective that you had in fact approached him.
