Petition to forcibly take Julia Teakle and Abbie Dowrick from Port and home to Perth 🥲
There's still been no explanation as to why no WA team took Abbie in her draft year, when I and others were saying she was an obvious first pick. Surely the talent scouts weren't THAT stupid, so she probably didn't make herself available in the draft, but there's been no clarification. Maybe she just wanted to get out of WA.

Dowrick did nominate for the 2021 draft, but only had herself to blame (by her own admission) for being overlooked. Even during her time at Port Adelaide, she's been in trouble with the law, which speaks to the conundrum that the WA clubs faced.

I didn't know that, thanks. It's a shame, she's a rare talent.

I can't remember exactly what happened but I do remember older sis Mackenzie was disgruntled with at least West Coast and maybe the WAFLW environment in general so they went over to play in the SANFL. I do distinctly remember it but not sure of the specifics

In defence of Mackenzie, she had a lot of personal stuff to sort through and it was all far more important, that she get the issues sorted out than keep playing football.

I don’t want to elaborate on the exact nature of the issues other that to say they were very personal, very serious and IMO, she did the right thing for herself, by initially walking away from football.

Yeah absolutely fair, I'm not throwing any shade her way or anything but I just do remember there being issues of a nature I'm not sure of. Thanks for enlightening 🙏

I think we have only FIVE players from our inaugural list still on the team....
Swanson, Hooker, Gibson, Smith and McDonald.

First game lineup:

Backs
Belinda Smith (14)Talia Radan (26)
Half-BacksMcKenzie Dowrick (5)Sophie McDonald (35)Ashton Hill (16)
CentresMikayla Bowen (1)Imahra Cameron (19)Niamh Kelly (12)
Half-ForwardsKellie Gibson (2)Ashlee Atkins (9)Maddy Collier (8)
ForwardsGrace Kelly (15)Tarnee Tester (23)
FollowersParris Laurie (25)Dana Hooker (17)Emma Swanson (13)
InterchangeCourtney Guard (4)Beatrice Devlyn (7)Danika Pisconeri (11)Hayley Bullas (24)Chantelle Perera (27

Bit of a blast from the past some of those players there.

As for those names you've mentioned, Swanson's been great but definitely version 0.5 of the modern midfielder, Hooker's essentially been a role player in later seasons on output, Gibson is good but often injured, Smith is good but a roleplayer in a good side and McDonald could be the most important of the list going forward but hasn't featured in a while.

As much as the coaching has been dreadful up until this year, bit of credit to the drafting and list management team 2nd year onwards (and a sign of how far the talent pool has come) in building a squad essentially without a massive presence from the inaugural list, even despite some unfortunate departures from a few of the brighter lights in that first list.

Could have had Emma O'Driscoll in the draft instead of Imahra Cameron. Still annoys me.

“Up to eight changes expected” - who do we think?
  • Harken, Di Donato and Lyons as the three late signings that weren’t used all that much:
  • Webb probably
  • Elkington retiring due to concussion?
  • Gooch already retired
  • Simmons? Goranova?
  • Hooker/Gibson/Smith retiring?

I thought Lakay had a strong finish to the season.
Would be disappointed if we cut her.

From the article

West Coast’s ruck roulette is starting to take shape as talks pick up with out-of-contract tall Sarah Lakay.

Despite off-season back surgery, Lakay played nine games for the Eagles this year, leading the club in hitouts.

It’s understood that Lakay does have some interest from a handful of Victorian clubs, including Essendon, but early talks with West Coast have been positive.

That was after a bit about us having interest in Alice Edmonds from the Bulldogs

Petrevski, Roux, Franklin?

I think we keep Franklin, still young, KPP.

Roux is a bit older, and now much less likely to turn potential into reality, but they may keep her for versatility.

Not sure how Petrevski is tracking. If she is on track to return healthy and keen, maybe keep.

But it's not hard to come up with 7 names to go with Gooch.
