Real late to the party on this but I just wanna say, I hope as a serious AFLW club we do away with these kinds of signings. Nothing against Verity, she was signed as a rookie and played 7 games. But if we're gonna be a serious football club we can't be signing athletes from other codes who haven't touched a footy until they're in their early 30's surely.

That was a years worth of time and resources flushed down the crapper that could've been used on a younger player.

In fairness while I agree with the cross-code aspect specifically, I don't hate the idea of giving a year or so to an older, harder body then phasing them out quickly as we rotate through the drafts.

The qualify of each draft is jumping up significantly each year, that coupled with the list sizes means we'll need to be brutal in cutting the floor each year and sort of see the bottom few players on our list each season as a revolving door (sadly).

Were it not Simmons on the list this year we might have retained one of our delistings (Ella Smith or Petrevski) or taken another pick from the bottom of the draft, all options which more than likely wouldn't have netted those 7 games this season and then would have been rotated out this year where Simmons was anyway.

The netball cross-code thing I would be concerned might have been a bit insulting to some of the younger girls who've played footy for years and were fighting for a spot on the list - Simmons probably wasn't the go in that regard. But don't want us to be the Gold Coast men's either where it's heaps of young talent with no direction or maturity within the squad, getting outmuscled on game day and less professionalism at training meaning the talent we do have doesn't develop properly.

Drennan was the perfect pickup for this and going forward unless list sizes increase dramatically I do like the yearly system of 2-4 18 year olds (as deep in the draft as we think we're still getting elite talent) then a 29+ year old who either comes cheap or free, can be a hard body for ~2 years then be phased out no hard feelings whenever we need to. If that was the logic behind Simmons I don't hate it in that sense.

Cant help but think, every game someone like Simmons plays, is a game a young player fighting to keep a spot on the list, and who may have years of improvement in them, doesn't get a chance.

Hopefully, she is the last of the mature age cross coders.

Anyone have a subscription to CODE Sports? There's an article in there about Daisy maybe pulling on the boots to play for Perth in the WAFLW this season, but I'm not going to get a subscription just for one article...

It’s Subiaco, not Perth, she mainly for due to one of our AFLW assistants, Baker Denneman, also being the head coach at Subiaco

West Coast AFLW coach Daisy Pearce has proven that she’s still got it two years after her AFLW retirement by lending a hand at Subiaco WAFLW training.
The training cameo was initiated by Pearce and Subiaco head coach Baker Denneman, who is currently the Eagles’ midfield coach.

Pearce joined the Lions pre-Christmas to get a taste of state league football.

“Daisy has been a tremendous source of support for me since joining the club,” Denneman told CODE Sports.

“She came down to training for a look, and to see what it’s all about but Daisy in her typical fashion couldn’t help herself but get involved and kick a few footballs in.

“She is a wealth of knowledge and highly skilled in the fundamentals of the game. Her presence and the character that she is allowed for the girls to gain plenty from the session.”

While Denneman said there are currently no concrete plans in place for Pearce to take to the field in 2025, he said that it would be a spectacle if she did.

Others with knowledge of the situation believe that Pearce could be swayed to play a handful of games in a major boost to the WAFLW competition.

The West Coast Eagles would like to thank Daisy for her contributions during her time at the club,
she has left an impression and we wish her every success in her future endeavours. :praying:
