Nobody forces a kid to leave. They leave for a better opportunity (or in most cases for a teenager, to play with friends)

Cut the crap, we all know this whole argument is based entirely around 1 player (who happens to be quite a talented footballer, hence the bitterness, i'm sure Hawk Sale wouldn't care if they were a spud of a player)

I can almost guarantee that the player in question (who would have played less than 5 games for the club) would have moved to Maffra regardless of ability, he went there because his best mates at school were at the club as well (and playing better standard of football).

Who is that??

Dave Waddel - Key Position Back
Tom Smith - Forward

Don't wanna rain on your parade but Dave is a midget in comparison to WGLFL Key Position, not big enough to be KPP in the U/18's.

I also heard Sale has thrown a good bit of coin at these two untried lower league players. I also hear that Phil Harris is getting paid more to go back to Sale then he was getting at Darnum...

Must have pooled their Rudd Money up at Sale.

You are way off!!!!!!!!!!!

The 2 Bairnsdale Footballers are getting standards and both are very good footballers who will play senior football. Neither are key position players but both will be very important players going forward. I would think Smith will play FP and Waddall would play HB / BP. Both are fit and can run so both may even push up the ground.

As for Phil being paid more money at Sale than at darnam. hahahah. What a joke. sale aren't throwing the kitchen sink at anybody.

I have seen a bit of Bairnsdale play and he is handy for them but I would suggest there is a big difference and yes probably pocket players, every club would have picked up pocket players. Nothing worth publicising.

I did hear directly from one of these new recruits that they were being looked after financially.

Every Senior Footballer at the Sale Football Club gets paid to base contract for a senior footballer is $100 per game. They pay there membership out of the players contracts and I think players have a 3 game injury clause if they are injured while playing or training.

I do think it is worth mentioning and well done from Hawk Sale for doing this. Both these senior players will help Sale return to finals football.

Good luck.
Very expensive year for Sale last year then considering the result.

Means a minimum of $33600 was paid to players (I would suspect more through injuries and additional for coaching and higher paid players) so closer to the 50k mark for second bottom. Ouch.

Spent the same the year before and won a flag and finished runners-up the 2 years before that as well. That makes it 3 from 4 years they have got a bargin and 1 out of 4 ouch! I think the club could live with that.
I know what the salary budget is at Sale and would not discuss it but i would like to know what you think a reasonable amount to spend on players is.
Sale has money in the bank, paid there players, upgraded the facilities all this over the last 4 years so i think the club has done a wonderful job. The ground would now be ranked one of the best in Gippsland to watch and play football. If the rooms were bigger i would say the BEST.

Does sound like they have done a good job and as you mentioned 1 in 4 aint bad.

I would not rate the ground as one of the best in Gippsland. Not even top 4 or 5 in West Gippy league.

Hard to say though about what is reasonable to spend. I wouldnt think paying every player that much per game would be the best way, certainly some savings there. ie new kids just out of thirds, or blokes coming up from the twos would just love to play seniors, so why pay them. Once they have proven themselves as good players then maybe pay some money.

Not being in a position like yourself and knowing salaries and budgets etc at clubs I can't comment on whats appropriate because I don't know. I would think though $50k on a second last team is a bad investment. Noted you won a flag the year before but with Harris, the Martins, Ivey etc you would have spent nearly double that to win it...

I can assure you they won a flag in budget and finished second last within budget. Very good effort by the comittee if you ask me.

Some teams pay reserves and seniors and some teams only pay the best players. As long as the club can afford to pay the money as well as improving facilities and equipment for both football and netball and leave some cash in the bank all is OK. When i played at bairnsdale the reseves got $25 a lose and $50 a win and the seniors got $50 a lose and $100 a win but had no money and could not afford to play in the major league. We went broke and went back and played East Gippy football. Where you got paid $50 a game to play seniors. 11 years ago that was. I don't think Sale is to far away from the right budget if you compare it to that.

Now on to some better stuff. i would love to see your best grounds list. In order for me

Morwell - The best for all (When it is not raining)
Sale - Good surface, best ground to watch footy from.
Traralgon - Same as sale. Visitors rooms terrible though.
Maffra - Great rooms for away teams. Ground OK, Watching good from social room but hard anywhere else.
Leongatha - Big ground but OK to watch from
Moe - Good when it is dry, terrible in wet. Good to watch from though.
Wonthaggi - from memory OK. Not sure if they have done anything since they were in the AFL.
Drouin - Small and sandy, terrible rooms.
Warragul - Stinks!!!

Surface wise Morwell now that Garfield is gone. Followed by probably Traralgon, Maffra, Moe (being redone now) and Sale, Leongatha. I wouldnt even talk about the rubbish they serve up in Drouin and Warragul, very poor grounds. In terms of a ground to watch from Moe is handy because it is set low otherwise many grounds are on par.

Couldn't agree more. Would struggle to find a fitter local footballer. Would smash Beep Test records, as would his old man still, who was/still is freakishly fit. My only concern is his lack of physicality, although he'll probably spend the year running up and down the wing anyway, without an opponent capable of keeping up.

Bourkey i honestly don't know who you are referring to .Is he the kid from Phillip Island ,Bairnsdale or one of the Sale kids ? All i am saying is that whilst everybody in the comp recruits for their seniors like any semi-professional league would ,Maffra also actively recruits for their U/16's and 18's and then when they inevidabley make the finals we hear all these "look how good our juniors are and from such a small town "type cliches.Whereas every other club in the comp sees the junior grades as an opportunitie to develop their local underage talent ,Maffra sees it as a chance to develop an elite squad of kids made up of yes the better players in the town ,but complemented with the best kids from wherever they can recruit them from regardless of the negative effect it has on other junior clubs around the place or the local kids who miss out.I suppose Power do the same thing but that is obviously the local pathway to AFL ,Maffra just do it for bragging rights.

Toby Leeds looks like going to Scorpians in the VFL from Salefc.

I wouldn't hang to much crap on the way Maffra do things Tyre well proven on how to run a successful club for a sustained amount of time. Allowing kids from other clubs to come and learn how to play good footy is not only good for the kid but also the club. They learn from good coaches, play against teh best, get more oppurtunity with power and if they continue to be good footballers become senior footballers at a strong club. Not often you hear about a big recruiting drive at maffra as they just allow the flow on effect to kick in and back themseleves to hold majority of their players. On the flip side Maffra continue to loose good players to higher footy and to local teams each year so it all levels it self out.

I hope Sale sets themseleves up for this type of sustained success over the next 10 years.

Ha Ha Ha, is'nt it nice of Maffra to allow kids from other clubs to have the honour of representing them. And as for the old chestnut, 'you need to play for a West Gippy club such as Maffra to have a chance at Power'; well thats been one of their major poaching tools for years and frankly it's a load of crap.

I think there was about 7-8 kids from alberton and 4-5 from ellinbank in the Power squad so it doesnt matter where you play you will get noticed. Kids from lakes entrance to bass have been drafted recently so the playing juniors in a better league theory is a load of crap.

It doesnt happen often, but I agree.

I agree that you don't need to be from West Gippy League to be drafted or noticed by power but if your only going to be a 0-5 game player at Power you are better of playing in a major league. It will be better for your football but of course there is exceptions. There always is.

How does it better your football? The good kids are always good and an average kid playing in the back pocket would be better off playing on the ball in a lesser league. The difference in standard is not that big. I am sure teams like NNG and bunyip in our league would be very competitive against the gippsland latrobe teams.
