Only problem is that I think we can only use 5 picks to match and that would leave us a bit short might need to be a bit more shuffling.
Is that true? My understanding is that the rule only limits how many live picks you can take to the draft. After that you can trade in and match with as picks as you want.

That was my understanding.
Essentially North has paid the open list spot price for those picks.
So they are active.

The trade would be

Geelong 30 + F2 > 23
North 42 + 47 > 30
WB 23 > F2 + 42 + 47
Maybe but seems like ridiculous overs for mine from a cats point of view. Trading up 7 spots in an even draft and throwing in our future 2nd which most likely is about 28-30 next year. We have a number of retirements next year and contract expires so doesn’t make sense to only have 1 pick before the mid 40s in 2022.

More likely Carl’s future 3rd round pick which we hold

I'd suggest 34 is more likely on the table than 30.

You may be correct, like most AFL rules a clear explanation of how the bid matching process works is hard to find.
There's a sticky thread on the trade board called the FAQs and resources thread.

In it there is a post (linked in the index) about the draft and bid matching. We have collated as many resources as we can find there, including the AFL rules, the bidding process supplementary document that is now a few years old but mostly still accurate, as well as other information collated from various AFL statements, articles from AFL journalists, and tidbits we've had from club insiders.

As far as I know, there isn't anywhere else where you'd find all of that in one place – but if you do find a resource I'd love to know about it so we can add it to our collective understanding of how it works.

Most of the posts in that thread I mentioned are actually a combination of various AFL rules and parts of the CBA that relate to particular topics, which is supposed to make it easier to find what you want to know and less confusing too btw. Taylor and I went through it all a few years ago and we just keep updating and adding to it now to keep it current.

Yeah, probably. How about we split the difference and say 32.

Whilst it still looks a good deal for North, half the picks between 32 and 42,47 will disappear in matching the Darcy and Daicos bids. We are really only moving up 5 or 6 spots in the order. I wouldn't bother for 34.

Geel Out: Pick 32(34) + Pick 34 (36)
Geel In: Pick 23(25) (WBD)

WBD Out: Pick 23(25)
WBD In: Pick 42 (North), Pick 47 (North), F3 (North)

North Out: Pick 42, Pick 47, F3
North In: Pick 32(34) + Pick 34(36)

Does this make sense
If North are putting that much on the table we would be wanting 23.
We would just do the trade without Geelong.
42+47+f3.
=
23

WBD Out: Pick 23(25)

North Out: Pick 42, Pick 47, F3
North In: Pick 32(34) + Pick 34(36)

Does this make sense

I’d love this from a north point of view.

Our future third might be used up with cooper Harvey next year anyway.

The reason Geelong will be involved is because WB want their F2. If they were happy with our F3 they would just deal with us and cut out the Cats.
So what is the trade then?

Geelong want dogs pick 23

North want to move up from 47 and 42

Geelongs F2 and Norths F3 in respect probably isnt seen that far off (Even though i personally see geelong falling and North Climbing so think it could potentially be upto 10 spots different

North have already traded out our f2.
To trade out our f3 as well would seem unlikely i reckon.
We will know in a few hours I suppose the latest the trade can happen is @pick 2.

No need for North's F3 to be involved, just complicates things needlessly.
