Here's a thought how about the clubs instead of using all their salary, spend some money on a good junior football program.

It beggers belief that metro and amateur clubs have the most points in the state, which is where all the population is for junior players are. Metro and amateur clubs should easily be able to fit in with 35 points, it shouldn't be that hard.
Hey mate, I understand your opinions but the problem is kids around 16-18 are dropping out of footy hence the need to recruit. Did they consider this when putting the points system in.
Even at the lower levels numbers are slowly declining? Why? I think it’s due in part to the AFL giving little back to local footy. Uneducated coaches, idiot parents/officals at certain clubs and the standard of umpires at the lower levels. All these things could be improved with more input from AFL who continue to make millions every year but give back stuff all to local/country footy leagues.

I know turbs, kids are giving up on footy if they aren't in elite squads by that age, or in the aps schools program and not playing footy with their mates.
I agree mate the AFL are washing their hands from these problems by saying look at Auskick attendences booming, but as you say numbers are declining throughout the state in that age bracket to keep community footy alive. I can reserves being scrapped over the next 5 years, with aflw playing the noon timeslot on Saturdays and an under21s comp to help get numbers

I think that neither the AFL or the clubs are doing themselves any favours with regard to junior participation.
The AFL only has an interest in the top prospects, which leaves some young guys disgruntled with the game.
Then there are clubs and competitions where the arms race for ex-AFL or VFL talent is so intense that you'd almost have to have played at that level to get a look in at your own senior club which means that young blokes when faced with playing footy or prefencing work, uni, girls, partying etc are leaning toward the second grouping.

Sounds like a 3rd 18 competition next year. Interesting to see only 3 Divyy 1 clubs nominate and no Divvy 2. 3 from Divvy 3 to make up a 6 team inaugural season.
The WRFL have completely lost the plot if this is true. My understanding is the umpire numbers have fallen away and the lower division were having reserve and senior games umpired by the same umpire. Who do they expect to umpire and officiate these matches? Field umpires, boundary umpires, goal umpires required for 3 extra matches. Clubs will need to find extra trainers which is a struggle for most clubs at the moment. What happens when these clubs have injuries and players unavailable? Teams will end up forfeiting and it will just be a complete waste of everyones time.

Not sure why the WRFL have lost the plot. Clubs are not forced to enter, they choose to enter. If a club has 20+ extra players why should they miss out on a game of footy each week. Yes, injuries may be a factor, but if you have surplus Seniors, chances are you may have surplus U18's who can also fill the spots.

We talk about players going to other sports, this is a way to keep them playing footy instead of getting pi55ed off because they're not getting a game and leaving the game altogether

AFL are using the increase in girls footy to mask over the issue of a strong decline in boys. At my daughters primary school, the kids are no longer kicking the footy at lunch time, instead they all shoot hoops. Rhere is no marking in the pack, there are actually not even any goals on the school oval. This is where most of our generation learned to love the game, if the AFL don’t get their act together they will completely lose the next generation.

in an ideal world those players go and play at a neighbouring club who is struggling g to field a reserves team.. But the reality is that these players probably end up walking away unless they get to play with their mates at the club they played juniors with.

Very true. AFL giving back stuff all. Put some money into the school oval and let them borrow a footy at lunchtime. Even primary school footy competition in majority of areas is a total shambles. Playing on smaller grounds and some teams don’t even score. What happened to schools have decent ovals or going to a footy ground close by and using there facilities like we used to do.

Thanks, interested to see who Divy 3 clubs are, would be a big effort from any divy 3 club to have 3 senior teams.

Cheers, the Suns struggled to get two team together last year and now puting up 3 senior teams, great effort.

Would have thought maybe Tarneit might have put up a thirds team.

Caroline springs ,Yarraville both had a 3rd side last year played against wallan,Bacchus marsh, sunbury, gisborne, diggers rest most games played on a Friday night

What league was this?

Very average to see so many teams have enough for a thirds and yet those in the lower divisions are struggling for numbers.
