Never played the story on GTA V outside of the first 15-20 minutes probably.

Once I found it “online” I never looked back just had so much fun doing random shit and killing/ getting killed by anybody and everybody. Didn’t have to use any brain power just switch on and do whatever, every session was different.

The positive memories around GTA4 I often find interesting because I vividly remember at the time it wasn't received as warmly due to less features from SA and things (well, memes) like Roman constantly calling to go bowling.
This was generally the perception among a lot of gamers at the time. It received very good critical reception, but from gamers it was mixed, with the general feeling being it had been so significantly stripped back in gameplay features that it was a step back from previous versions. Also criticisms around aspects such as the targeting system and the phone thing you mentioned. There just wasn't as much to do as in previous versions, either.

I think Rockstar and many game critics thought it reasonable for the higher graphical fidelity, the physics, the story and the effort put into making the city feel like it was living and breathing more realistically to come at the expense of the gameplay/sandbox features, but many fans of the franchise didn't. They therefore saw GTA V as a return to more of what GTA should be about.

I think that in subsequent years, many came back to IV and grew to appreciate it for what it is. Perhaps a good game in its own right; just not a great GTA game if we consider what came before it (VC, SA) and after (V) as being more representative of the franchise.

I know i was somewhat disappointed I couldn't customise Nico as much as I could CJ, who I basically made into getaway driver Tyrone from Snatch:

Vice City is my favourite game of all time. Reckon I put over 100 hours into it.

Think I 100%'d it three or four times.

I used to replay it yearly for donkeys years (not always 100%, mostly just the story missions). Definitely one of my favourite games of all time (hence why I replayed it so often).

Last did it when the definitive edition came out, might do it again with the recent patch/updates to the trilogy.

The public discourse around IV is so interesting, I remember finding it such a step back from SA (which is admittedly my favourite in the series).

I liked the variety and different ways to tackle things (such as having that mission where you're being chased down a hilly S bend area..... I just took the whole car straight down the hill itself, with minimal damage, creating a huge gap where I wasn't caught). But San Andreas was a step down in terms of mission variety and "difficulty". I got lambasted the last time I mentioned it, but Vice City was a huge struggle for me... San Andreas was "too" easy in a way.

I didn't care much for the Liberty City environment in IV..... but the overall game mechanics were pretty good. I loved the driving in the game.
I've replayed the game a bunch over the years, but funnily enough I haven't played the expansions (EFLC and TBOGT) as often.

Personally I think 4 sucked. Played it once and never went back to it. Boring grey ass new york. Shit driving physics. Just meh. Couldn't even tell you anything about the story other than the obvious Roman bowling meme.
