*The White Stripes

Love Jack White is an absolute genius
While I’m here will throw this iconic Stripes track in to the mix

Yeah, cheers Cookie. Edited. I did know it was White Stripes but sometimes the fingers tap independently of any clear thought

And here he is performing the song this week at The Corner Hotel explaining that he wrote it right there 20 years ago.

Speaking of the Corner, the best band in the known universe (Superchunk...d'uh) have finally made their long-awaited return to our shores and just happen to be playing there tomorrow night. Support from the most fabulous Meanies.

Been a long time since I last saw the 'Chunk play there in (insert year that was a long time ago). I guess running one of the planet's most successful indie labels can keep one quite busy.

Anyway, I shall see the cooler persons among you there.

For the uninitiated.....

A fine starting point.

Oldie but a goldie.

Cool song. Awesome video.

Another very cool song and video.

And a track they wrote to commemorate the Orange God's first term in orifice.

P.S. Trust me when I say there's a whole lot more gold. More than Sovereign Hill and the shops at Dubai Airport combined. If you haven't already, get around them.

How's 1993 at The Palace sound?

If you're there and talk to Wal Meanie say hi from me.

Was there TOD, fantastic night, my first time seeing them and more than worth the 10 hours return on the XPT

I did happen to speak to Wally....briefly, drunkenly....after the show. Person I went with got some very cool selfies with Link, too. But alas, didn't see the above post in time to pass on your regards.

Meanies were awesome. Link was, in his words, "a little drunker than I like to be" and was in fine form as a result. Rest of the band were super tight. They basically played a 'best of' set and totally kicked butt. 10/10.

Anyway, just for shits and giggles, here's the Meanies new(-ish) single....

As for the other part of your post, don't think Superchunk have ever played The Palace. Did a little googling to (try to) refresh my memory. They last toured here in 2013. Played The Forum with Neutral Milk Hotel and M. Ward. Going back to the 90's, they made 3 visits to Australia. They came in '92 and '94 to play Livid Festival. But Livid were non-Melbourne shows, although I have a vague recollection of them maybe sneaking down here for a side-show with Buffalo Tom in '94. Then they returned for their own tour in '96, supported by Smudge and The 3D's. They played The Corner and have actually since released a live recording of that show.

Legend! Had a suspicion that you may have been there as I remember you many moons ago mentioning your mutual admiration for Superchunk. Impressive effort, my man. Kudos to you.

And yeah, I freaking loved it. Great set list, even with the bit of extra weight given to 'Foolish' for the 30th year anniversary. Just killer song after killer song. (4 of the 5 songs I posted above made the cut! Only 'Jackie Mittoo' missed. Would have loved to hear that. And 'Mower', too....but I digress.) I thought the girls from Bat Fangs were great replacements for Laura and Jon. Particularly, Laura King (aka The Other Laura) on drums, given the size of the shoes that Jon left to fill. Loved the drum swap with Mac during 'Fishing' at the end.

But yeah, got well tanked and had an absolute ball.

Hung around after the show and had a chat with Mac, who came out from backstage after a brief cool down to do a little mingling. Showed him my (now aging and not nearly as sharp as it once was) Superchunk tattoo which, a little surprisingly, he thought was awesome.

Jump forward to yesterday and while I'm not on Instagram (or any social media for that matter), I happened to come across Mac's Instagram page and saw a post he'd made the day after the Corner gig. I'm not adept at posting/embedding stuff from Insta, so I'll just post it in full.....

Thanks Melbourne! Wild to be back at the corner, reunited with the Meanies and with a fantastic set from Delivery as well! Great crowd. Hanging with old pals from AuGoGo days, Chapter Music peeps, Cable Ties & new friends. People brought artifacts and tattoos. Awesome city.

Lol.

So I'm scrolling through the pics he posted from the night and I get about 9 or 10 pics in and.....there's my arm!

So my limb is now famous. I feel so proud. I knew that arm always had it in it.

To see my arm (and some other not nearly as great pics from the night), go here.....

TOD's famous arm

I shall leave you with my musical highlight from the night. Highlight in that it's an album track and therefore perhaps not the most famous of Superchunk songs, but at the same time it's a personal fave of mine so I was rapt to hear it played....

One thing has always puzzled me - Jim Wilbur has been playing the same guitar for what appears to be decades and it has a “Gundagai Dog on the Tucker Box” sticker on it. Would love to know how that came to be.

Yeah it would have been '92.

I dredged thru what's left of my memory. I was working there and they played a festival of sorts, a few hours and four or five bands. They sacked me in Jan '93 cos I didn't want to work NYE. I was over it by then. Seeing all these bands was one of the bonuses of working there.

How about TOD post more on the Main Board ffs?

The Other Dean

There’s a few campaigners on there that need sorting out

Come At Me Old Timey Baseball GIF by Team Coco

About 20 years ago I was on here in a previous incarnation discussing guitar slingers. One gentleman suggested Leslie West from the band Mountain, and while he wasn't in my "best" bracket at the time, the recommendation did make me delve deeper into the artist's repertoire. And that's what a good recommendation does.
"Hey mate check this out"
"Yes I will, thank ya very muchly"
And we never did get into making those bigFooty footy cards with BF posters in classic 70s/80s handball poses.
PS - the other poster in question played guitar in in a reasonably well known Aussie hard rock band in the early.mid 70s and played with some absolute legends, so his opinion means a fair bit to me at least. And he barracks for North so must be a top fella and that's probably the most important thing.

ZZ Top, George Thorogood, Rose tattoo + others touring, Gig locations are Mornington and Bendigo. Any chance fellas that you might engage witihin 50km of a major population centre? I'm interested, as are several friends and family, but we're all thinking "how the hell are we getting to/from that", assuming a few beers.

ZZ Top and George Thorogood are doing some capital city shows. You're not missing much with the Tatts these days - they don't have the menace and hardness they used to have that made them great.

Saw Rose Tattoo at the Yarraville Club in February. Probably nothing compared to 1981-82 vintage, but I thought they played great and sounded great.
The Margaret Court Arena date might be worthwhile as GT will open for ZZ Top but costs almost as much for just the two bands, and is on a bloody weeknight.

Great fun, thanks for posting.

Love the Corner, seen heaps of bands there, but I can't believe they have still got those fking post in the way of the stage.
