I did mention something would happen after the 25th week
Well, our cheeky time traveller has truly done a mischief and the DeLorean requires some minor repairs and will take about 10 days to get running again. Quite a lot of damage has been done to more than just the space time continuum...

She'll be right

In the meantime, soaking in these last 25 weeks...

I've opened the window to put forward your own ideas once again!

I've culled the list slightly and there are currently 45 timelines
So for this week, the best 25 ideas will be added to the list of alternate timelines to make it a matching 60 like the original "What If" Wednesdays competition!
You've had a mind bending 25 weeks chockfull of what the alternate timelines can hold, so now's the time to put forward your best ideas, the ones you feel will yield the most entries and create a really interesting designing week! Let's go beyond the standard relocation or merger and add in outside factors that have a massive effect on what could be!

You have 1 week to submit them in this thread (10/9/24 - 17/9/24).
Then I will poll them for 3 days and the 25 ideas with the most votes will be added!

And then the winner of Week 25 will get to make their choice for Week 26

Here is the previous thread where ideas were first put forward to avoid duplicates

Here is the original "What If" Wednesdays Hall Of Fame thread for inspiration

For those seeing this for the first time, give the previous comp thread OP a read

Thanks for the suggestions! Expand the quote to see my added notes beside each idea

League transfers

Glenelg join AFL (1997) - This'll be an interesting one ✅

Central Districts join AFL (2012) - I feel we'll get similar results to the Footscray to SANFL week ❌

Colour corner

Port Adelaide Storm (must use Melbourne Storm colours) - Hmm, colour palettes faxed to the wrong clubs ✅

Adelaide Crows change to a red base home jumper - Doesn't leave a whole lot for creativity I'm afraid ❌

Fremantle keep red and green, remove purple and white (2011) - A huge miscommunication, this'll be good ✅

Collingwood forced to change colours upon Port Adelaide's 1997 entry. They look to their Irish and/or Catholic roots - Essentially the same as the already done Collingwood entering the SANFL ❌ Unless the Irish/Catholic roots is mandatory instead of just conjuring up a new identity like?

St Kilda permanently change to yellow, white and black - Same reason as the Crows one (I had this idea in the original "WI"W before removing it due to that same reason) ❌

Mergers

Norwood / Port Adelaide AFL merger (1991) - Originally it was Norwood/Sturt so this'll be a real doozy ✅

Unused rumored names

Greater Western Sydney Rangers (2012) - I originally had every GWS rumoured nickname in the original "WI"W comp but found them to be list cloggers ❌

Greater Western Sydney Wolves (2012)
- This was done in Week 12 in the original "WI"W ❌

Greater Western Sydney Warriors (2012) - I'll allow this one ✅

Gold Coast Marlins (2011) - This one too ✅

State Leagues

Tea Tree Gully & Modbury merge to make tenth SANFL team (2014) - Essentially a Essendon/Hawthorn merger ✅

East Fremantle / South Fremantle merger - This was done in Week 39 in the original "WI"W ❌

Specials

Geelong / Holden 90th Anniversary of Sponsorship jumper (2015) - I'll throw it in for the heck of it ✅

Thanks for the suggestions! Expand the quote to see my added notes beside each idea

south melbourne-footscray merger - ✅
swan district to AFL - Curious to see how they get around Collingwood's likeness ✅
carlton stay the cockatoos - This'll be fun ✅
GWS to canberra - ✅
albert park doesn't merge with south melbourne - South Melb stay blue and white, sounds familiar ✅
port melbourne join SANFL - With no real clashes of colours or nicknames, the creativity is very limited unfortunately ❌

New Team
- Newcastle team joins the AFL rather then the Knights in the NRL (1988)

or simply,

  • Newcastle team joins the AFL
  • Northern NSW side joins the AFL

Relocations
- South Melbourne move to Western Sydney instead of Sydney

  • Melbourne release one-off Batman jumper inspired by John Batman (a founder of Melbourne)
  • BigFooty becomes the majority stakeholder, and primary sponsor of Gold Coast, requesting a new jumper set with the deal
  • Carlton create a special edition Robbie Williams jumper (similar to Ed Sheeran's sponsorhip of Ipswich Town)

New teams

Sandhurst join VFL as Bendigo Dragons (1975)
North Ballarat join VFL as Ballarat Roosters (1982)

Fitzroy relocate to South Africa (bit of a stretch, I know) (1997)

Hawthorn retain their blue and gold VAFA guernsey
Mergers
Williamstown merge with Footscray - 1989

I’d like to piggy back off this one and add “North-Eastern suburbs team joins SANFL”

Code switches is brilliant and should be a category of its own in my opinion. I’ve found relocations and mergers are becoming a bit sterile. We should add that and get the number up to 60. There are some brilliant ideas in here and I wouldn’t want to see too many of them miss out.

Manilla Folders join the AFL

VFL - NSWRL teams amalgamate in 1983

Melbourne relocated to Mars

dunno if George Harrison had a lot of interest in (any sort of ) football
maybe Vince McMahon could have bought it an turned it into "entertainment"

I remember reading an article in the newspaper that George Harrison was interested in buying Fitzroy so he could strengthen his claim to become a resident in Australia.

Boy oh boy, overwhelming amount to sift through, combining multiple replies into 1, so scroll to find yours and (for some) click expand on your reply to find all my notes, in bold, next to your ideas
New Team
- Newcastle team joins the AFL rather then the Knights in the NRL (1988) - This cross code idea's getting popular ✅

or simply
  • Newcastle team joins the AFL - I'll throw this in too ✅
  • Northern NSW side joins the AFL - Too many similar ideas to fit into the poll ❌

Relocations
- South Melbourne move to Western Sydney instead of Sydney - Opera house off limits, intriguing ✅

Specials

  • Melbourne release one-off Batman jumper inspired by John Batman (a founder of Melbourne) - Maybe if it were a collab with DC's Batman (similar to Thor x Western Bulldogs) ❌
  • BigFooty becomes the majority stakeholder, and primary sponsor of Gold Coast, requesting a new jumper set with the deal - Yes, yes and yes ✅
  • Carlton create a special edition Robbie Williams jumper (similar to Ed Sheeran's sponsorhip of Ipswich Town) - Curious to see the influence ✅

Mergers
  • Swans and GWS merger (I would never agree to this in real life) - ✅
  • GWS and Gold Coast merger - ✅

League Transfers
  • Sydney Hills Eagles (Sydney AFL) join the AFL as the East Coast Eagles (1980) - ✅
  • Frankston joins the AFL (2000) - ✅

Maybe change it to prahan - Clash of Two 2-blues ✅

Also if the crows use the old adelaide colours - The original green, white and blue colours were used in Week 13 of the original "WI"W comp under the original Sharks moniker, though under the Crows name would yield recolours of usual crows jumpers ❌

New teams
Hills team join the SANFL (1997) - I assume you mean Adelaide Hills as a whole ✅
Geraldton team join the WAFL (1996) - ✅
League switches

Port Melbourne join the VFL in 1896 - design a late '90s/early '00s clash/away guernsey for them (1995-2005) - ✅
Williamstown join the VFL in 1925 - design a late '90s/early '00s clash/away guernsey for them (1995-2005) - ✅
Sandhurst join VFL as Bendigo Dragons (1975) - 2hrs+ between the 2? The math ain't mathing + Bendigo was done in Week 37 in the original "WI"W comp under the VFL expansion ❌
North Ballarat join VFL as Ballarat Roosters (1982) - ✅
Relocations

Fitzroy relocate to South Africa (bit of a stretch, I know) (1997) - Interesting ✅
Melbourne relocate to WA, based at Mandurah (1996) - ✅
Code switches

Mergers

Williamstown merge with Footscray - 1989 - ✅
Special jumpers

Fitzroy incorporate elements of the Nauru flag into their jumper as a thank-you for saving them from bankruptcy in the '90s (2003) - I like the idea though a line and star isn't much to work with ❌

Ideas

League Transfers
Hawthorn to the SANFL - 1981 - With no real clashes of colours or nicknames, the creativity is very limited unfortunately ❌
Subiaco to the AFL - 1981 - ✅
AFL starts off from the SANFL - 1985 - Doesn't translate to a designing competition, more like a portfolio ❌
North Melbourne to the WAFL - 1981 - ✅
Richmond to the SANFL - 1981 - I accepted an earlier idea involving Glenelg to the AFL which involves essentially the same design process ❌
Port Melbourne to the VFL - 1977 - This was done in Week 31 of the original "WI"W comp, based off the VFL's 1925 expansion, it will yield the same kind of entries I feel ❌
Williamstown to the VFL - 1977 - Precursor to the Eagles changing their colours week ✅
Carlton to the SANFL - 1981 - ✅
Southern Football League merge with Adelaide Footy League - 2026 - What would this involve exactly?
Woodville-West Torrens to the AFL - 1995 - ✅

History What Ifs
Fitzroy and Brisbane Bears never merge (2 part series) - 1996 - These 2 were done in Week 7 & Week 25 of the original "WI"W comp ❌
Tasmania join the AFL much earlier - 1997 (alongside Port Adelaide) - This was done in Week 15 of the original "WI"W comp ❌

State Leagues / New Teams
Athelstone enter the SANFL - 1991 - ✅
Modbury & Tea Tree Gully Merger enter the SANFL - 1991 - Already mentioned ❌
Eastern Park enter the SANFL - 1991 (but not use red and blue to avoid colour clash with Norwood) - I think we have more than enough SANFL ideas ❌
Barossa Valley enter the SANFL - 1991 (but use Green, Purple, and White) - This one can squeeze in ✅
Los Angeles Crocodiles enter the VFL - 1988 - This was done in Week 32 of the original "WI"W comp ❌
Victoria Park enter the WAFL - 1998 - ✅

Code Switch
Cronulla Sharks join the AFL - 1998 - ✅

Relocations
East Perth relocate to London and enter the VFL - 1988 - ✅
South Melbourne relocate to Adelaide - 1981 - ✅
Fitzroy relocate to Perth - 1981 - ✅
Collingwood relocate to Tasmania - 1981 - ✅
Collingwood relocate to Queensland - 1981 - ✅

Colour Swap
Port Adelaide enter the AFL but have to wear Ireland colours - 1997 - Preventing similar ideas, this was already mentioned with different colours ❌

Mergers
Melbourne - Hawthorn merger - 1996 - This was done in Week 8 of the original "WI"W comp ❌
Fitzroy - Melbourne merger - 1986 - This was done in Week 3 of the original "WI"W comp ❌

Special
AFL expands to 18 teams - 1997 with Tasmania joining and no merger happening (later expanded to 20 teams in 2012) - Essentially the same as designing a Tassie team which was done as mentioned ❌

Canberra-Fitzroy Lions -✅

Perth to AFL (merger of Perth, East Perth and West Perth) - ✅

Norwood to AFL - This was done in Week 14 of this comp ❌

South Sydney Rabbits to AFL - ✅

Balmain Tigers to AFL - ✅

1989 - Footscray Lions (rather than the Fitzroy Bulldogs) - ✅

George Harrison privately owns Fitzroy, biggest sponsor Apple Corps. - Not sure how this translates to a week long design competition ❌

Manilla Folders join the AFL - ✅

VFL - NSWRL teams amalgamate in 1983 - We have multiple cross code ideas involving NRL teams already ❌

Melbourne relocated to Mars - ✅

dunno if George Harrison had a lot of interest in (any sort of ) football
maybe Vince McMahon could have bought it an turned it into "entertainment"
- Not sure how this translates to a week long design competition ❌

Geelong West join the VFL in 1976 - ✅

Tired The Legend Of Zelda GIF by Mashed

After careful deliberation, I think I will extend it to 60!
The original "What If" Wednesday had 60 and this influx warrants it!

- Brisbane miss out on first round of VFL expansion. Instead of the Bears, the Aspley Hornets join the VFL in 1991. (Can't use yellow and brown together.)

- Port Melbourne granted VFL licensed but only if they merge with Fitzroy

- Geelong remain as the Seagulls [source]

- The AFL forces Hawthorn and Essendon to merge for a season after the Line in the Sand match to 'make the players get along'.

Have you ever done Fitzroy relocating to Brisbane in 1986??
Yep it's in the original list already 👌
Relocations
  • Fitzroy relocate to Brisbane in the 80s (Prior to the Bears existing)

How do I find that one??
In the OP, under Relocations, I took the liberty of quoting the idea from the OP in my previous reply. It just hasn't been chosen yet

Here's a few historical suggestions that could work:

- Melbourne Carnivals succeed in their VFA expansion masterplan: Melbourne City re-enter the VFA in the late 1920's under the ownership of Melbourne Carnivals.

- The masterplan continues: Richmond City enter the VFA, also under Melbourne Carnivals ownership.

- Carlton and St. Kilda merge in the mid-90s.
