The prospect of establishing a club in a relatively small rugby league heartland city was considered far too financially risky. But then, in stepped enigmatic billionaire A.MacGuffin. Offering to fully fund the club, and a brand new stadium, the AFL jumped at the chance, hoping that the club would act to strengthen their position east of the Barassi line at very little cost to the AFL themselves. Despite some resistance from a handful of locals, in 2040, the Newcastle Royals would play their first season in the AFL."
