If you're like me then you may find yourself a little confused as to what has gone on other the past day or so. Here's you summary:
The deal we all thought was going to happen between Franklin and GWS is now off the table and he's accepting a last minute deal with Sydney for $1.4m a year over 9yrs

WTF is going on???
Curious to see what everyone thinks of the great man now?

Personally I'm a little pissed off, I could understand wanting to leave for GWS if the offer was $2m a year and I wouldn't have held it against him at all but for him to leave for Sydney on a deal which sees him paid nearly the same as what we were offering WTF????

While I understand that 9 yrs is massive, if he is as good as he could be in a few years then he could have been on even more than what he is taking now.

Many blokes at our club took massive pay cuts to hang around and he goes and leaves for an extra $200k, as far as I'm concerned f**k him, we don't need him

And to Sydney good f**king luck maintaining a decent list when 2 blokes are half your salary cap

Bizarre isn't it. Good luck to him. I have no hard feelings against him, he was always going to go, where was irrelevent in my opinion. He's chosen to leave us so let him go. He doesn't want to stay then he should leave. Our club is a lot bigger than the Big Budster and will be around for a lot longer than he would be. He's given us an outstanding 9 years of service, more enjoyable moments than I can remember and has been involved in 2 flags. He's now going up there to chase $$$ and a lifestyle. Hope it works out for him in the end

Its more like 1.1 Million a year... possibly less if you take the COLA into account. WE could match that but the longevity of the term that will cause problems. However, I think that Veteran status will make it a lot easier for us to hold onto him and even make Sydney deal with us properly (eg first round draft pick, second round draft pick, good young midfielder like mitchell or parker)

I have now come to the understanding that Buddy wants to leave because he doesn't want to live in Melbourne. That is fair enough as he does get a lot of attention here and it would be very hard for him to walk the streets here normally.

I think we just have to find the best possible deal possible - Call Sydney's bluff and match it... then get some high quality picks for him.

We are Hawthorn and we will be ALWAYS HAWTHORN - anyone that doesn't want to hang around can seriously get stuffed. Including buddy. I will always love him for all he has given us... but I'm still pissed off he is going to Sydney.

Whats done is done... we will move on... we are a lot bigger than Lance Franklin.

P.S he will look shit in a Sydney jersey.

yeah... buddy doesn't want to live in Melbourne... so he sounded out Sydney. Still kept playing for us and kept it under wraps so that it didn't disrupt our season... and it clearly didn't.

I think he did it the right way, played out his contract and helped win us the premiership.

He can go and still feel he didn't do us wrong. It's just shit that he is going to a Premiership contender and that we will seriously have to put a stop to him when we play him.

Exactly what I thought. On stopping buddy I wouldn't worry, Hodge, Roughy, Lewis.... seriously we will mess with his head real good.

Such a shock that Buddy is going to Sydney especially for my son, he wears number 23 in his Basketball team that he plays for, and 23 for his local Junior team he plays for, and all 5 Hawthorn footy jumpers all have number 23 on it.

I really feel empty right now loved the guy to bits as we all did , but he really has shat in our face by making these arrangements last year with Liam Pickering.

I know that the club will go on to bigger and brighter things but I am just so disappointed the way it was done....I could have understood Buddy going to GWS but not Sydney , I really hate them now (Sydney)

Has
Your pushing your luck here on our board
Won two flags, been the face of the club, dominated in the GF loss, given great service to the club over an extended period, given some unbelievable memories to all supporters. His done his bit for the club and I still love him and wish him luck.

Just hope that we get fair compensation.

Saturday we win a Premiership. We get to celebrate for two whole days and now this. I'm feeling more than a little empty. The fact that Buddy initiated the move to Sydney is hard to take.

We knew there was every chance we would lose him to Greater Waste of Space. I didn't like the thought that our club could lose a marquee player. I have no problem with a young man who has given great service to a club wishing to move to greener pastures. But, to lose that player to a major rival with little realistic hope to receive neither fair compensation or a chance to match the financial terms is just painful. What I don't like is that the rules make it very difficult for a Melbourne-based club to keep exceptional players like Buddy. The AFL placed the carrot in front of Bud. The AFL first mooted that carrot last year by saying ambassadorial and possibly other payments would be available in order for clubs to make rather outrageous offers. As the various payments allotted to Sydney, and other interstate clubs, which appears to include third-party payments, the original, Melbourne-based club has little hope of matching an offer to even restricted free-agents. Is it now open-season? Or is it merely a one-off because it is Buddy? I hate to think what this sort of thing would do to a club like the Doggies or North. A marquee player is more than the on-field value to the club. The AFL has been screaming 'equalisation' for years. Surely, this compromises that idea.

I love what he's given us - two flags, two colemans, countless highlights and memories, but I am disappointed in what's happened.

I wish him nothing but the best - he deserves the right to pick and choose where he plays now. I don't have to like it, however.

Depends who we pick up.

Nothing's really changed except we have to face Buddy when we play Sydney but Gibbo owns him anyway and based on the finals a Sydney need a lot more than Buddy.

If Franklin is leaving to Sydney because he had had enough of Melbourne as a city (ie. Too much media all the time) then I can understand. However if it's football related then I would be very interested to know why (ie. He doesn't like that way that the club is playing him) and it will be nearly impossible for me to accept with all the effort the club has put into him over the last 9 (?) years.

The real story may or may not come out. I think it's a waste of energy to get angry and hate him forever. I was pretty angry today but the few sane things I've read around the place have cooled my head and made me realise it's not worth getting worked up over.

The way he was negotiating this deal behind our backs while that snake Pickering was lying every Saturday morning about our chances to secure makes me hate him. My wife gave me signed memorabilia for Christmas from the Big Bud. I honestly can't decide whether to burn it, piss on it or smash it into a million pieces.

I feel the same about Bud as I do Terry Wallet. Scumbag of the highest order.
