your argument is lame because we did actually stick by our club. I don't see Sturt with 60,000 members, because not many care about them because 75% of the support base abandoned them when the crows were formed. When we were put in a dark period, we turned it around. If you ever supported an actual sporting club, not a state based money corporation, you might actually comprehend this

some really obsessive hate for us, we love it.

The question you posed was supporters aren't sticking by the clubs when you were getting 13000 to an afl club game the supporters had deserted they have come back as might other supporters to other teams!

Unfortunately people are staying away because of the competition is no longer a ligitimate competition anymore so those supporters aren't coming for other reasons than their club

The Maggies are dead, its all Port Power. Shame too, used to love drinking in the Alberton Bowls Club. Even the diehard Maggies fans have walked.
 
Back on topic, Bays spent a sh!tload on redeveloping their function centre and then the GFC (global financial crisis) hit. No one had the cash to throw around as they previously did. Then we spent a few hundred thousand on the lights and court costs.

Bottom line is we have approx $3.4 mill in debt, $2 mill will be covered by footy park sale proceeds over 7 years. Leaving $1.4 mill to clear. Interest payments on debt is approx $250k a year. The tin rattle is to reduce debt/interest.

The bays will need to work something with the holdfast council, there is too much to lose on both sides of the fence, if the bays fold the council is left with an oval that has the cricket club as it's sole tenant, they still have the debt of $2 million on their books but own a facility that is a bit of a white elephant. If the bays remain at least the facility has some chance of breaking even and slowly repaying the debt.

A lot of sides have a lot to lose if they can't come to an agreement

The council need to look at the situation as first loss best loss or work through it to get it's debt repaid, at the same time realising if the bays fold is it a huge loss to the community they run! The 2 million could become interest free and repaid as a dividend of profits if the bays can get the bistro to show profits. Or the council actually take the bistro over run it themselves and retain the profits to reduce the debt!

But I'm sure all of this has already been discussed with the council and a plan is in place

I think the key for all SANFL clubs is to implement a sustainable business model. Sadly last year every SANFL club bar Sturt ran at a loss.

No question, they aren't any different from every business in Australia, you trade insolvent you should be closing your door unless you are backed financially or have understanding creditors which obviously glenelg have ATM with the council for obvious reason

why on earth would we want to merge and take on another clubs' debt?

we've only just gotten ourselves out of strife, no need to get back into it with another club. it sucks for what they're going through but would undo so much hard work and resolve we've gone through in the last few years to get back to a 'oh shit, we really could wind up tomorrow' state of mind.

Why would any club merge? Guaranteed failure.

People who have supported an SANFL team for 30 odd years are not about to support a hashed up merger between clubs.

Would rather see the Bays go under than merge.

The issue now is more and more supporters have left because of the structure of the competition so if they feel their support of their team is no longer they will just walk away.

I think it's fair to say that those who were unhappy with the introduction of AFL teams have walked with probably more to follow. Whether their decision will be reversed you would doubt it.

Saying that there is still a competition to support they need to try and retain as many supporters as they can, they need to live with the decisions they have made. And by they it's the SANFL and it's clubs who have made these decisions, they may or may not have been influenced by the AFL who knows?

How much of that has to do with Sturt not having/owning a true home ground? Are maintenance and operating costs for each club's ground costing them a lot of money?

For those that aren't quite aware, Peter Motley Oval is basically a public park in Unley that they just happen to play organised state league football matches on. People are free to wander across it, play on it, walk their dogs through it at any time of the day or night, even during a football match if they so wished. There's been a number of pushes to make it an official closed-off home ground for the Sturt Football Club, but each time it's met with resistance and push-back from local residents.

Yeah, our glory day SANFL crowds of 6000 are so sorely missed when we are playing in front of 30-50k at Adelaide Oval!
