Good Post.
I would class Cooney only as serviceable.
Cross made a lot of disposal errors and gave too many hospitable handballs.
Higgins was guilty of not going hard enough on more than one occasion.

Higgins was lazy, he let Johnson run loose down the wing many times and did not even attempt to ut in some hard yards both ways. Eagle for as much as he is bagged, never drops his work rate in the respect and we missed those efforts.

Shaun was in the "let down" basket, no doubt in my mind.

I agree. 2 years ago he booted 5 goals against the pies at the same stadium to win the game. This year he hardly got a kick.

Got a chance to watch it last night, there was a massive difference in the level of desperation showed by both sides.

Maybe this will in a funny way help us, because our blokes might have just started to think it was all a bit too easy right now, maybe the wake up call to remind everyone that we competed with StK & Geel last year by applying immense pressure, not the rubbish dished up Sunday.

Have to say this, I hate to knock a guy who is hard at it & tries his guts out but Addison is not up to the standard we require to win a flag, his skills or lack thereof put everyone else under more pressure....there are a few others who were guilty of this yesterday but they've been well covered by all the posts.

What went wrong? Morris out was a big loss, he is a very good player who can play big or small. I think he would have had first crack at Medders.
I admire the speed in which the doggies play and have hoped for a while that we adapt that style of play. I think we showed some of that on the weekend.
The doggies will be in the thick of things come September and a big positive from the game is how Murphy played, he was impressive and if you can get close to a full season out of him this year it will help alot.
Good luck for the year and I hope we meet in September, it would be a blinder.

Morris was scratched due to the "flu" which was what was reported by the media. The bulldog backline was a mess, and Medhurst was able to capitalise on alot of poor judgements/mistakes by the dogs and had a good day.

I think in all honesty the dogs were very lazy, and expected to walk over Collingwood. Letting any team kick 8 in the first quarter is ridiculous and the second quarter's effort went for nothing after the inability of the dogs to put Collingwood away in the third.

The dogs were simply outclassed on the day...

However you're right, its only round one and probably a good measure of reality the boys probably needed.

There was no hope of it being competitive when they flooded the back line at every single chance they got. Hall was trying to take marks 4 on 1 there was no chance whatsoever there. Collingwood have turned into St Kilda in the back line and that's just makes for boring football..

That, plus some ridiculously one sided umpiring would've contributed to a huge loss of spirit and momentum.

Was really disappointed for you guys yesterday.

For those Collingwood or WB supporters that were at the game, they would know that this game was played pretty free-flowing. Both sides zoned with numbers their back half at times when needed however, more often than not, it was one-on-one over the ground throughout the day and that was very clear to see.

As for "boring football", 19 goals is far from it, considering you could only manage 18 against Richmond. I'm sorry but we do not play a St Kilda brand of footy. Mick's philosophy has always been the ability to play one-on-one footy. Sure, we zone like ALL teams in the comp but by no means do we constantly "flood".

In my opinion, the Dogs looked startled in the first quarter. They just weren't prepared for Collingwood to come out that hard. Collingwood will probably find it difficult to come out against the Dogs like that again this year.

If I was a Doggies fan I wouldn't take much out of the game, other than the Pies are probably better than most people think. Oh and blueblood25, did you even watch the game? We have one of the most attacking backlines in the competition. Pfft.

I dont know what game you were watching, the only time we really flooded was nearing half time when the doggies were coming back, just to stem the flow leading into the break.
Apart from that i thought it was pretty fast and free flowing by both teams, and how footy should be played (i dont like St Kilda's style either).
As for the umpireing, yes they made a couple of errors (for both sides) but in the most part I thought they let it go, again IMO how it should be. If there is not a blatent free kick let it go.

We didn't put enough pressure on the Pies to make them fumble, especially in the our forward 50. Too easily they rebounded from their defensive 50 too often, instead of creating turnovers.

He must have done something, he ended up with 108 in SC... although I'll grant you I didn't see a lot of him.

Boyd had a disposal efficiency of just 58%. Is that good enough from an AA player?
That also suprises me, because from where I sat he was absolutely killing us in contested possessions. I don't think Boyd would be at the top of your list of concerns, he played a sensational game.

I came over to have a look and I think you guys were on the money with most things.

I think Morris might be more important than some experts say. He gives freedom to the other blokes in your back-half. The accountability required to control so many good small forwards seemed to be beyond the WB backs..

I liked how Hall had connected with the midfield in the NAB but it seems the love affair has gone too far and they should keep their eyes open for the other forwards.

In the end, I have a feeling that we might have improved a little since last year when the Bulldogs were a slightly better team. I know you guys wouldnt say this, but the game was unbelievably skillful at times....fantastic to watch....

Your lads were sublime by hand and foot for the majority of the game. We were well off the mark for all but 20 minutes. Didn't make for good viewing this side of the fence. The overlap you guys made with hard running and quick hands, a bit of nous (old fashioned supporters would call it sheep dogging) killed us.

Morris was a huge loss as he is the leader of the backline making changes to matchups etc when needed not Lake as some opposition fans seem to think

Too many fumbles

Too many dropped marks....and I mean easy chest marks and pretty straight forward overhead marks from lake that he would have gobbled up last year

Collingwood having Didak, Davis, Swan, Medhurst and Lockyer rotating through forward line/midfield as their dangerous targets and Rocket puts our best tagger on the least dangerous one of them, Lockyer was a big coaching error

Swan pushing forward on Cross taking him into backline where he was out of sorts and frustrated at times

When chips were down they went to into 50 looking for Hall when he had 3-4 opponents instead of waiting for the better option to present or creating something else

Some all round dumb football.

Hahn from memory

Ta I think it was. Anyone notice the goal umpire was one of the judges from So You Think You Can Dance?

Good call. That had me baffled as well.

I know its a bunch of excuses but...

  1. We were missing 3 starters in Eagleton, Morris and Ward
  2. Played 2 guys we probably should not of in Hahn and Johnson. Hahn could have done with a week off and Johnson was not good enough to take a fit players position. Moles would have done a lot more.
  3. Hargrave, Gia, Harbrow were off the pace and probably do have the flu.
Lets see were we sit in 5 weeks.

It always amazes me how Collingwood are so underrated (at least IMO they are).

They're very, very good, and well coached too. Last year towards the end of the year, they were kind of like us at the end of 2008 - just ran out of puff.

They are well disciplined in executing their game plan and this was no more evident on Sunday.

We are a good side too, but we need to stop automatically thinking that we're better than Collingwood.

I don't doubt that we can beat them, but they have shown that they have our measure on two of the past three matches.

The simple way to get over this loss is to bounce back strongly against Richmond on Sunday.

* we missed morris BIG time
* williams didnt do a good job in morris's place
* will minson.......do i need to say anymore??
* no intensity from anybody
* first quater was shit
* turnovers hurt us
* our defensive pressure was.... we had no defensive pressure

apart from all these mistakes it is round 1 there is 21 more rounds to go. We will bounce back next and we will rip apart what is left of the tigers sunday arvo. Cmon dogs lets get 2010 underway XD
