The Creator has a Master Plan and Journey in Satchidinanda are two of my favourite albums. Incredible pieces of work.

I love Sun Ra too, but more as a singles artist.

In terms of other genres…

My favourite metal albums are Emperor’s In the Nightside Eclipse and Black Sabbath’s Master of Reality.

Reggae: The Congos - Heart of the Congos.

Country: Townes van Zandt - Live at the Old Quarter.

Hiphop: Nas’ Illmatic.

its incredible how much great music has been made in the past century.
i’ve only got into sun ra recently but it’s good listening. def an alternate to the jazz i usually listen to but it’s phenomenal stuff.

it’s cliche to say, but a lot of charles mingus’ work was outstanding. mingus ah um, mingus x5 & the black saint and the dinner lady are all supremely excellent

Oh yeeeeah, Journey by Alice Coltrane is monumental! Ditto The Congos with Lee Perry at the controls.

I saw Pharoah Sanders (RIP) play and sing The Creator when he played Melbourne in 2015. It’s the only time I’ve ever cried at a gig, it was so so beautiful.

I love music waaaaay more than I care about footy.

Trying to pick one or even do a list was giving me a headache so I've stolen Makeshift Park's idea and picked a dozen and rather then trying to pick my exact favourite 12, I've tried to make it representative of my favourite styles of music.

Pharaoh Sanders - Black Unity

Djeli Moussa Diawara - Djeli Moussa Diawara

RRI Gamelan - Klenengan Session of Solonese Gamelan

Alice Coltrane Sextet - Live at the Berkeley Community Theater 1972

Billy Woods - Aethiopes

Hariprasad Chaurasia & Kishori Amonkar - Ragas: Lalit & Sindhi Bhairavi

Dadawah - Peace and Love

ኃይሉ መርጊያ [Hailu Mergia] / ዋሊያስ ባንድ Walias Band] - ዘራፌ

Julia Holter - Aviary

Exuma - Exuma

The Drones - I See Seaweed

Muhammad Yaqub, Ghulam Muhammad Qalinbaf, Abdul Rahman Lohn & Mushtaq Ahmed - Concert Freiburg (Germany), 16th June 1984
Dark Magus was recorded in 1974. Agreed, incredible album!
You're right, recorded 74 and released 77. That run he was on then was just absurd, especially the latter part with the electric stuff. It's funny, most of my favourite jazz albums aren't electric, but those electric Miles albums are just something else.

Master Of Reality is a ripper.

So difficult to narrow down but I'll attempt a Top 5 (too hard) Top 10 in chronological order of release. In these days of files and streaming I'm less inclined to have/listen to full abums and have more best ofs, compliations and single tracks... but these were all albums I bought on vinyl or CD and have stood the test of time. Bit of a cheat as there are some live albums but it helped cull the list

Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II (1969). Produced by Jimmy Page so there as some self-indulgent moments but I love every track even the cheesy balads and the one that references Lord of the Rings (Ramble On)

Rolling Stones - Get Yer Ya Ya's Out! (1970). Could have said Sticky Fingers or Let It Bleed but this live album has a lot of my favourite tracks and energy to burn. Mick Taylor era the best Stones lineup ever IMO

B.B. King - Live at Cook County Jail (1971). Some great medleys and the part in the intro when the inmates boo the sherrif always makes me laugh. Memories of living in Fitzroy in the 80s when this got played every sunny weekend

AC/DC - High Voltage (1976 international release). Bon's lyrics and vocals are the best, **** BJ. Actually a mix of the TNT and High Voltage albums so you get Long Way to the Shop, TNT and of course High Voltage.

Blondie - Parrallel Lines (1978). Their 3rd album and the one that launched them from CBGBs new wave/punk darlings to international pop stars. Packed with hits and a Buddy Holly cover. Hanging on the Telephone is also a cover BTW

Bowie - Stage (1978). Upbeat versions from multiple concerts, Bowie was at his charismatic peak with hits including Ziggy Stardust (I actually like the Bauhaus cover), Station to Station, TVC15, Heroes and some rarer tracks. Adrian Belew on guitar

Jamiroquai - Return of the Space Cowboy (1994). Their second album and the one that broke them internationally. Just Another Story, Light Years and The Kids could be from James Brown soundtrack, before they went on to poppier tunes

EBTG - Temperamental (1999). Deep house classic, produced by Deep Dish and with the inimitable voice of Tracey Thorn (Massive Attack/Protection). Their last album before taking a long break so it had to last us a while, and it did

DJ Shadow/Cut Chemist - Brainfreeze (1999). Two extended live turntable mixes of original 60s/70s soul/funk vinyl singles, one by each DJ. They later released a breaks album with the original tracks as well before Shadow went D'n'B

The Avalanches - Since I Left You (2000). Puts me in a good mood every time. Slightly annoying that the flow of the well-blended tracks is interrupted by Frontier Psychiatrist but otherwise, near perfect. Featuring DJ Dexter Fabay

But then you're missing Kind of Blue - often considered his best - not to mention Sketches of Spain, Birth of the Cool, Milestones, Round About Midnight and others  Personally I'm not so keen on his electronic and fusion work, or free jazz in general. Prefer hard bop, big band/swing and cool jazz.

These are the jazz albums in my iTunes:

Led Zepplin ll was the first album I heard played on a “quadraphonic” player. I thought listening to Whole Lotta Love was the best thing I’d ever heard. I’ve got a few Led Zep albums but went off them as I got older because of the self indulgence you mentioned. And some of the songs go on forever.

Hailu Mergia - excellent choice!

I’ve been to Ethiopia many times. There is so much incredible music there (old and new) that never gets released in the west.

Then there is the more well-known stuff - Ethio-jazz, starting with the legend that is Mulatu Astatke… I’ll name drop and say that I had the pleasure of meeting him in 2016. Also mates with his brother-in-law who lives in Norway, where there is a growing community of Habesha people. Fantastic people, fantastic music.

I once had Can’s Damo Suzuki in a frontal bear-hug while yelling “We love you, Damo” about 2cm from his face. He smiled and took it in his stride. A sorely missed legend. RIP.

pretty amazing stuff, closest i’ve come to a famous person in that capacity was wondering past kylie minogue many years ago when i was too young to know who she was, but my mom noticed!

Some really good picks here, my favourites from this list are Uboa, Christoph de Babalon (My Confession especially is all-time), DJ Screw (it's unreasonable how many essential DJ mixes he has - favourites are probably Endonesia and No Drank), Triple Six Mafia and Blackout (Memphis rap in general is one of my favourite styles of music - Tommy Wright III is another one whose 90s tapes are absolutely timeless; especially Runnin-n-Gunnin and N.O.D.).

My favourite metal albums are Paysage d'Hiver's self-titled, Trhä - vat gëlénva!!!, Dispossessed - Warpath Never Ended, Blut Aus Nord - Fathers of the Icy Age, and diSEMBOWELMENT - Transcendence Into the Peripheral.

Bit of a pattern there other than disEMBOWELMENT.

As far as jazz goes, my faves apart from Miles are Coltrane, Pharoah Sanders and Sun Ra.

One of the best gigs I ever saw was the Sun Ra Arkestra supporting the MC5 with guest vocalists Mark Alm (Mudhoney) and Richard Blum (Handsome Dick Manitoba) and it was FREE and in Central Park to boot (2005?)

But, but… Frontier Psychiatry is my favourite track on Since I Left You. You don’t like it!???

I don’t like that it was dropped in the middle of the album when every other track is blended in 🤷‍♂️ will never understand why it wasn’t at the end

Anyone check out the Alice Coltrane live album from this year, The Carnegie Hall Concert? Amazing performance.

Probably my second favourite of the year behind the unreal free jazz album by أحمد [Ahmed], Giant Beauty.

i think that still pimpin is easily one of the greatest rap songs ever made, both as a single & as a whole part of an album. TW3 set the stage for southern rap to take off (especially horrorcore style stuff) and it’s a shame that he’ll never attain the popularity that a lot of other acts did of that time. another one i forgot about was da devils playground. i think it was my first foray into the less popular music from that time.

I met Marshall Allen after the Arkestra played a free gig in Bennett’s Lane (now closed) in 2012 - in front of about 30 people - when he was 87. He celebrated 100 in May this year and is still playing though I don’t think he tours anymore. Not bad for a guy who has been part of the band since about 1955! The Arkestra are due to tour Australia again soon. Joy.

TW3 set the stage for southern rap to take off (especially horrorcore style stuff) and it’s a shame that he’ll never attain the popularity that a lot of other acts did of that time. another one i forgot about was da devils playground. i think it was my first foray into the less popular music from that time.
Yeah Loko was an amazing rapper, it blows my mind that she was 16. Pretty much every single verse she did on a Tommy beat was amazing, but I especially love her appearances on Wanted Dead or Alive by Ten Wanted Men.

It is a shame that Tommy never got the fame he deserved but on the flipside, but I also love that following him on social media now that he's just a regular dad given the themes of his music in the 90s. I bought a poster off him a few years ago and his email handle was gangstaforever 😂. Such a legend.

Agreed that Da Devil's Playground is another classic. Some of the best DJ Paul beats, which is saying something.

I love Memphis rap so much - Blackout, DJ Sound, DJ Squeeky... so many classics. Still finding them, such as this uniquely positive and uplifting Mephis gem Come-N-2-My-World by V.O.S. I only discovered this year.

Trying to pick one or even do a list was giving me a headache so I've stolen Makeshift Park's idea and picked a dozen and rather then trying to pick my exact favourite 12, I've tried to make it representative of my favourite styles of music.

Alice Coltrane Sextet - Live at the Berkeley Community Theater 1972

I heard this great Clash song on the radio today and cranked it to 11, you need to listen to it loud.

You seemed to have missed the joke, that was an SNL parody about all the UK punk bands hating Thatcher.

.

Twas a great song. Didn't they reform later on under a different name? I know one died, but I'm sure they re-appeared in the early 90's under a different name.
