Thomas clearly miles ahead of Murphy this year and Pendles probably alway better than the other two. The ironic thing is Thomas used to be branded a squib. Murphy is a serious pea heart

Pendlebury = Murphy > Thomas

All 3 are best 22 players in any club so not sure any decision is a mistake.

Surely kidding. Murphy is a terrible footballer who has zero awareness, zero defensive abilities, poor disposal, and is one of the biggest peahearts in the AFL.

Guarantee you he wouldn't get a game in the current Collingwood team, because he only runs one way, and thats not the kind of player we want in a good team. let him run one way all he wants in a rubbish carlton team.

Thomas has improved this year, Murphy's gone backwards. Pendles is a class above.

would the people who routinely claim Murphy is better than Thomas like to substantiate it using 2010 form rather than perceived potential?

The whole Carlton team were insipid today, but their midfield has got to be the most selfish, unaccountable and lazy pack of individuals ever to wear the navy blue jumper. They were an embarrassment today. The MMM team were commenting on what a major investment the club had made in Gibbs and Murphy and that they were not repaying that investment.

Murphy is not at all damaging because he doesn't contribute at stoppages, he drops off and runs forward of the ball while it is still in dispute, meanwhile Gibbs is still languishing in the back line and panicking whenever the ball goes near him. You can't use the excuse that they are young and inexperienced, because they were beaten time and again today by guys like Thomas, Pendlebury, Wellingham, Sidebottom, Beams and even Blair who are all the same age or younger. Carlton was about 4 months younger on average than the Collingwood side today.

Collingwood toyed with Carlton for the last half of that match, like a cat with a mouse.

The comparison would best be made when all 3 players have had an uninterrupted pre-season. Murphy's hip surgery around Christmas time meant he was on a restricted training program during January, February & March & wasn't even a certainty to be ready to go at the start of the home & away season. You cannot underestimate the impact an interrupted pre-season can have on a player.

He showed what he is capable of during the 2009 season & if he can have a full pre-season for 2011 I have no doubt he will repeat his 2009 season, if not better it.

Pendlebury broke a leg last year and also had an interrupted pre-season, yet he shits all over Murphy.

Try and come up with a better excuse, or just admit Murphy is yet another in a long line of Carlton drafting blunders.

murphy and pendles are pretty much even , id say pendles has a better defensive side though, not to say murphys slack in that sense though.

thomas has to have more than one good season to catch eitheir of these guys, the other two have nearly strung 4 pretty consistent seasons together since they started their careers. thomas is closing fast though

ellis is miles behind all 3, yet has a premiership medal!

Pendlebury has been the better of the 3 every year for their whole careers so far. Murphy was superior to Thomas every year before this year however Thomas hasn't been that much better than Murphy this year that he overtakes him. If the trend continues next year it will be 1. Pendlebury 2. Thomas 3. Murphy but currently Pendles first, Murphy second and Thomas third.

Completely agreed. Murphy is a going to be a star, I certainly wouldn't be upset with him in the Collingwood midfield. The problem he has is that he doesn't have all that much midfield help. i definitely don't think that he is soft, or unable to win the contested footy. It will just take time for this group of players to mature together, Murphy and Gibbs are just the base of the future mids, they will need five or six others to contribute.

Having said all this, Pendlebury is in another class to Murphy at the moment. There were times today when Pendles just outright beat Judd in and around the contests. Pendles could be anything, like Dal Santo, but with more contested ball winning ability and more height. Frightening he's only 22. Murphy is better than Thomas for now, but the gap is definitely closing...stoked we took Thomas in front of Ellis though...

Just to remind those making these comments; Murphy had hip surgery in December and had played barely a game of football prior to round one. Has been carrying injury all year, which sidelined him a month ago.

Magpie fans might be all excited; and why not, it looks the best chance you've had of winning a flag in the last 30 years; but jumping on someone in a year they've struggled with injury to compare with another in an up-and-flying side is beyond boorish.
