Part 2 of this thread is here:

It's a mirror of Essendons list from 3 years ago.
We already went through the delusion stage, fun watching them repeating it from the outside.

The main difference being our best players are signed up, while Essendon’s bailed at the first opportunity.

Merrett would have been out the door too if he didn’t have a year to run on his contract.

You should be able to give us the answer to your own question, how many coaches did your club burn from 81 to 2010?

11 coaching changes in 30 years in case you don't know.
Excellent post and a good comparison between the grim years at Tigerland and the last 20 at Carlton. Both horribly run football clubs in those respective times.

A lot to learn for the Blues with what Richmond did post 2010 to be successful on and off field. A clear strategic direction and a supportive board that held the line and didn’t interfere in the work of those employed at the club to do a job.

The big question will be if Carlton choose to go the easy way and sack the coach and a couple of football personnel, or have a clear strategic direction and follow it through. The way they handle the internal review will be telling.

There are plenty of clubs closing in on a decade of irrelevance:

Adelaide
Brisbane
Collingwood
Essendon
Fremantle
Geelong
Gold Coast
Melbourne
North Melbourne
Port Adelaide
St Kilda

It’s hardly a Carlton thing.
So just 7 teams are 'relevant', and 1 of them is Carlton.

You must be joking.

No doubt that this is crunch time, the opportunity will be there to set the course properly for the future once the review has been completed. Getting the right people into key positions is important though, as evidenced by what happened at Richmond.

Once upon a time Carlton may have considered anything but winning the flag to be irrelevant.

That was before Carlton started making a habit of winning spoons.

Have your fun, are you old enough to remember when Collingwood failed to win a flag for 32 years? I am and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it :tearsofjoy:

Good chance Walsh goes at the end of next year, he can see his future in Cripps. An no room in the cap to pay him the 1 million he is worth with prior terrible signings.
Carlton ruins careers

Thankfully no.

I have thoroughly enjoyed Carlton's 26 years and counting though:cool:

And unlike Carlton, even despite not winning flags, the Pies never chalked up 20+ years where we never even made a PF let alone a GF!!

No, you're quite right, you made GFs and lost them, saw a few of those too. I'd rather not play in them but you proudly carry the record for the most losses in Grand Finals.

There are plenty of clubs closing in on a decade of irrelevance:

Adelaide - grand final 4 years ago and already rebuilding with some talent
Brisbane - 2 prelims in a row and vying for top 4 again this year
Collingwood - grand final appearance 3 years ago
Essendon
Fremantle
Geelong - um, really???
Gold Coast
Melbourne - prelim 3 years ago, sitting 2nd and looking a monty for another this year at least
North Melbourne
Port Adelaide - narrow prelim loss and odds on for top4 this year
St Kilda

You're absolutely delusional if you think carlton is in the same league as even half those clubs. Only gold Coast is comparable.

I think some on here vastly overestimate how much talent you need to be successful in the AFL.

If you’ve got the spine which Carlton do it is a great start. Carlton’s biggest list flaw right now remains their midfield. Too reliant on Walsh, Cripps struggling to find his previous form and outside of that a fair few question marks.

You don’t need stars in every position to succeed at AFL level.

Melbourne this year has won a lot of games and their midfield has two stars only plus a star ruck. Their forward line is handy but none of them are stars. Backline obviously has Lever and May as really strong talls to build around.

Richmond’s 2017 flag team was built around a forward line of Riewoldt who was obviously a gun with a heap of hard workers. The midfield had Martin and Prestia combined with some other solid players. Certainly wasn’t Cox, Kerr, Cousins and Judd though. Backline obviously was pretty strong.

Point I’m making is you don’t have to have a team stacked full of talent everywhere to achieve. One of Carlton’s problems continues to be the lack of depth they have. Fix that and have a coach that can get serious buy in and they should move up the ladder.

LoL, yeah I'm sure you would rather have another bottom four finish instead of playing and winning the 99 PF.

99 was sweet because we beat who we did when they were soc cocky. Winning a preliminary, in isolation, no great achievement.

Of course, you'd rather be up there challenging but even making a GF only to lose is a hollow achievement.

Nah, that’s still a combined zero premierships between those teams.

Making finals is a nice bonus, but no one pays attention to past preliminary finalists. You are either win a flag or you’re stuck in the ‘losers’ pile for that season.

Yeh we’re currently underachieving, but we’re realistically a couple of spots away from par. Things aren’t that bleak.

Seriously wtf??

Only Carlton supporter could think finishing in the bottom 6 for nigh on of 15/20 years is better than playing in gf/pre lim finals....

🤦‍♂️

Thankfully for you, 1999 is the last time you had to worry about 'hollow' achievements.

Let's hope for another decade of Carlton fans talking up their elite talent.

Didn't ever make that statement, you did. I'm quite serious about preferring not to play in a grand final than to lose one. If you then think that equates to rather be bottom of the ladder, I can't help you.

Carlton fans u30 don't know what contending actually feels like.

So yes, they need to convince themselves that it is better to be shizen than win big finals if ultimately you fall short anyway.

Which wouldn't apply to me then, seen 8 premierships, never think about the 3 Grand Finals we played in during my lifetime that we lost.

You must remember when Carlton fans liked John Elliott!!

Did a pretty good job for the first ten of his 20 years as President, a bit like Eddie at Collingwood.
